CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!

04/27/06

Good morning. It’s Thursday, April 27, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

A member of Massive Incorporated board has confirmed for The New York Times that Microsoft is working to conclude a deal to acquire Massive for a price-tag of somewhere between $200 – $400 million.  Massive developed the technology used to insert billboards and ad-campaigns into video games in specific places and for specific amounts of time.  An official announcement is expected next week.

iEntertainment Network, a publisher of massively multiplayer online games (MMOG), has launched iMagic Mobile, which will deliver massively multiplayer, networked games to mobile phones.  iMagic Mobile will focus on MMOGs, multiplayer technologies and mobile games that allow players to compete against many players.  The first of iMagic Mobile’s new multiplayer games will debut in the next two months.  The company plans to file for new patents for massively multiplayer mobile phone gaming.  iMagic will develop multiplayer mobile phone games based on existing properties, and develop as well as license new games, that will also be available on video game platforms.

AT&T Inc. has teamed with Starz Entertainment Group LLC (SEG) in a distribution deal to offer SEG’s Vongo Internet video-on-demand service to AT&T High Speed Internet users.  The deal includes a co-branded AT&T and Vongo website (www.att.vongo.com) that will offer AT&T broadband subscribers a 14-day free trial of the service.  Launched earlier this year, Vongo delivers movies/video content that can be watched on a PC, select portable media devices, and on TV.  The Vongo service includes a library of 1,500+ movies and video titles as well as a live streaming Starz TV channel for an additional fee.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

If you smush together reality series such as The Apprentice, American Inventor (or in the UK Dragon’s Den), and a bit of Double Dare you’ll get the BBC’s new kid targeted series titled Beat the Boss.  Set to premiere on BBC One on May 22, Beat the Boss gives entrepreneurial efforts a shove into the “them-against-us” realm pitting one team of three kids against a team of three adults from the business world, with each team charged to come up with a new product specifically for the kid’s marketplace.  The series is hosted by Saira Kahn, former contestant on The Apprentice UK edition. On each episode Kahn will give the teams the specific category from which they must create their respective prototypes, such as a new fruit drink, ultimate leisure inflatable, or a new practical joke product.  The concepts will be judged by a panel of 25 kids.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Noggin has picked up a second season of its original preschool music-based series, Jack’s Big Music Show (13 eps).  Production begins next week on the new episodes, which are slated to begin airing this fall  (12:30p, 5p).  Jack’s Big Music Show is produced by Spiffy Pictures.

Buena Vista Games, Inc. has entered into an agreement with Tokyo’s Q Entertainment, Inc., a multiplatform development and marketing company, to publish four new game titles for release worldwide, except Asia.  The games include Lumines II, a sequel to the action/music puzzle game for the PSP system; Lumines Plus, a new version of the original title for the PlayStation2 system; Every Extend Extra, an action puzzle shooter game for PSP; and Meteos: Disney Edition, a version of the Meteos game that features Disney characters, for the Nintendo DS.  All four games are slated for release fall 2006.

Sega Studios has developed Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz for the new Nintendo Revolution entertainment system.  The Sega game includes a range of Party Games that were designed specifically to take advantage of Nintendo Revolution controller.  The two things that Super Monkey Ball fans seem to be most excited about is the new added ability to jump and the new single-player mode where players will be able to control the characters in all of the dimensions.  This is one of the games that Sega will be showcasing at Electronics Entertainment Expo, better known as E3, which will be held May 10-12 in LA.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Double Fusion, the in-game technology and advertising service provider, has inked a multi-year deal with indie game developer Trilogy Studios to guide advertising and product placement for the studio’s upcoming release of its first title.  Trilogy Studios was co-founded by game developers Michael Pole (formerly of VU Games), Rick Giolito and Mark Skaggs (both toiled for EA), and have worked on game titles including Medal of Honor, Knockout Kings, The Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth and The Chronicles of Riddick.

Gap gets back to its roots with the launch of the Rock Color, its summer marketing campaign.  Launching in May, Rock Color takes us back to 1969, the year Gap was founded.  Rock Color features music and bold colors woven throughout the various components of the campaign including the Rock Color Bus Tour (May and June), a traveling pop-up store designed to look like a late 1960s school bus, that will sell select items (t-shirts, hoodies, flip flops etc.) and make visits to neighborhood beaches, festivals cities including LA and NY.  Gap is also featuring Rock Color summer concerts, May 1 – June 18 in NY, LA, San Francisco and Chicago, including performances by Dave Matthews Band, Counting Crows and Goo Goo Dolls, Willie Nelson, John Fogerty, Panic! At the Disco, and John Legend.  Additional support includes in-store promotions/marketing, an online microsite and ads in magazines, newspapers, outdoor and direct mail, radio spots, street teams and so on.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Eric Giler has been appointed Chairman/CEO, Groove Mobile, the mobile music service.  Giler will also sit on the Board of Directors of Groove Mobile.  Giler founded and served as President/CEO of Brooktrout Inc., from 1984 until is sold the company in October 2005.  He also serves on the Board of Directors of Soundbite Communications, Muse Research, and Alliance Systems.

Sony Computer Entertainment America has appointed two electronics/computer entertainment industry veterans to support its ongoing multi-platform strategies as well as bulking up its marketing initiatives as the company plans to launch the PlayStation 3 next generation console towards the end of this year.

  • Peter Dille has been named SVP/Marketing, marking his return to the company.  He will report directly to Jack Tretton, EVP/Co-COO.  Dille is responsible for all marketing efforts in North America, including overall PlayStation brand management, hardware and software marketing, advertising, creative services, public relations, promotions, and online and direct marketing.  Most recently Dille was SVP/Worldwide Marketing, THQ.  In his first go around at Sony, Dille held several marketing and communications roles, and he was part of the team that launched the original PlayStation console in 1995.
  • Philip Rosenberg joins as VP/Business Development, he will also report to Tretton.  In this newly created role Rosenberg heads up the team responsible for driving and creating new revenue opportunities for the company and of course the PlayStation family of products.  Rosenberg and his group will work in tandem with SCEA’s existing sales and marketing teams.  For the last 16 years Rosenberg led The Performance Marketing Group, the manufacturer’s rep firm he founded, as its President/CEO.

Granada International named Flavio Medeiros to head up the company’s new Latin American office as Senior Sales Executive/Latin America.  In this newly created position, he will be responsible for business development in the region and with Spanish speaking U.S. networks.  Flavio was previously Senior Manager of Jetix Programming and Acquisitions with Walt Disney CompanyLatin America.  He will be based in Rio de Janeiro and report to Tim Mutimer, director/sales.

Matthew Zinn has been upped to SVP, General Counsel, Secretary and Chief Privacy Officer, TiVo Inc.  Zinn joined TiVo in June 2000 as its Chief Legal Officer, and is responsible for overseeing all legal, regulatory, legislative and consumer privacy issues for TiVo.
