Good morning. It’s Thursday, April 26, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

CBBC (UK) will launch Deadly Mission Madagascar (10×30), its new conservation-centric adventure series, in 2013. Produced by BBC’s Natural History Unit in Bristol for CBBC, Deadly Mission Madagascar will be hosted by action adventurer Steve Backshall. In the series, Backshall will challenge a team of young “Deadly Explorers,” to set out on a wildlife expedition to Madagascar charged with the mission of getting involved in established programs and making a difference in protecting the unique and threatened Malagasy wildlife. Deadly Mission Madagascar is the latest addition to the successful Deadly branded group of programs, which includes Live n Deadly, Deadly 60, Deadly Top 10s and Deadly Art.

LICENSING

Millimages signs a licensing and merchandising deal with BBC Worldwide for its preschool series 64 Zoo Lane (104×11). Under the agreement BBC Worldwide takes the global licensing rights to the show, excluding French-speaking world. 64 Zoo Lane revolves around a young girl, Lucy, who lives next door to a zoo and becomes friends with the animals. Each night, her friend Georgina the giraffe comes and gets Lucy and they head to the zoo and listens to the animals tell their stories about where they come from and what they can do.

Fox Consumer Products EMEA (FCP EMEA) ties up an exclusive pan European licensing deal with Rubies for an adult line of costumes for The Simpsons. The deluxe line will include adult Homer, Marge, Bart and Krusty the Clown costumes will debut at retail in August 2012. Rubies is also developing an entry price point line that will be launch for spring/summer 2013. FCP and Rubies have a long-standing relationship that includes costumes based on properties including Glee, Avatar, Edward Scissorhands and The Addams Family. This is the first time that Rubies and FCP EMEA have worked together directly.

Correction: Under European Licensing Company‘s (ELC) new deal with Slovenia-based Eurocom Doo to produce new stationery lines featuring popular brands, it is Eurocom Doo that will develop new products based around brands such as, Batman, Superman and FC Barcelona.

Activision and Fox Consumer Products (FCP) will release a new Ice Age video game this summer, Ice Age: Continental Drift – Arctic Games, to support the release of the upcoming fourth Ice Age movie, Ice Age: Continental Drift in 3D, which will open July 13, 2012. Developed by Behavior Interactive, Ice Age: Continental Drift – Arctic Games invites players of all ages (the game has an ESRB rating of E for Everyone) to use teamwork or go head-to-head as Manny, Sid, Diego and their furry friends in motion controlled competition.  Ice Age: Continental Drift – Arctic Games will be available for Nintendo’s Wii, 3DS and DS, and Microsoft’s Kinect for Xbox 360.

Gazillion Entertainment and Marvel Entertainment release the newest update to Marvel’s kid-targeted the free-to-play massively multiplayer online game (MMOG), Super Hero Squad Online (www.heroup.com). Players can now suit up their squads with hero costumes and characters straight from the upcoming feature film Marvel’s The Avengers, which releases May 4, 2012. Presented by Marvel Studios in association with Paramount, the movie is distributed by Disney. The game features Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in full costumed regalia. Super Hero Squad Online is the first online Marvel game that allows players to assemble the original Avengers team comprised of Iron Man, Ant-Man, Wasp, Thor, Black Panther, Hawkeye, the Hulk and Captain America. To support the theatrical release of The Avengers, Marvel Super Hero Squad Online brings together a team of heroes to protect Baxter Plaza and Asgard from the trickster Loki. Meanwhile, the world falls into chaos, mirroring the very first adventure the original Avengers embarked upon. Earlier this month Marvel Super Hero Squad Online expanded to include Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries, excluding Spain.

The Jim Henson Company (www.henson.com) unveils plans for the 30th anniversary of its popular kid’s TV series Fraggle Rock in 2013. Henson launches the yearlong worldwide Dance Your Cares Away celebration that kicks off this week with an art competition and a number of new products. The Jim Henson Company is partnering with online artist/designer community Talenthouse for a contest, launching this week, which invites artists/designers around the world to create and submit Fraggle Rock inspired artwork for exclusive 30th anniversary commemorative product merchandise. Thirty brands, designers, and artists will join the Dance Your Cares Away Fraggle program by offering unique products to commemorate the year. MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney Channel will premiere season two of its comedy A.N.T. Farm, which stars China Anne McClain, with back-to-back episodes Friday, June 1, 8-9p. The first episode, titled creative consultANT (8p), features a guest appearances by Zendaya (Shake It Up). McClain, a Hollywood Records recording artist, will perform her original song, DNA, in the episode. Created by Dan Signer (The Suite Life on Dec, The Suite Life of Zack & Cody), A.N.T. Farm is produced by It’s A Laugh Productions.

Ink signs a number of TV deals for its Russian CGI animated K3-8 aimed series Masha and the Bear. The animated series is set to begin airing across Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland, with other territories to follow in the second half of 2012, including Poland, Hungary, Australia, South Korea, Turkey, Indonesia, Ukraine Italy, the Middle East, France, Switzerland, Benelux and Czech Republic. Masha and the Bear follows the humorous and visual gag-filled adventures of a little girl named Masha and her reluctant friend, the bear. Already popular in Russia, Masha and the Bear has a licensing program there that includes local and international licensees such as Kinder, Egmont, Orkla and Ferrero.

Random House Children’s Books releases Elmo’s Big Birthday Bash! – A Step into Reading App for the iPad. Designed to help kids practice early reading skills and includes helpful reading tools for parents and three literacy games, the interactive story app features narration by Bob McGrath – yep the Bob who has been on Sesame Street for 40+ years. Elmo’s Big Birthday Bash! – A Step into Reading is the first app developed as part of Random House Children’s Books and Sesame Workshop’s joint digital publishing program, which launched earlier this year with the release of several Step into Reading Sesame Street ebooks. Elmo’s Big Birthday Bash! is also the first Step into Reading app developed by Random House Children’s Books with Smashing Ideas. The Step into Reading program mission is to give every kid a successful reading experience and allows kid readers to progress through the steps at their own speed.

Every Baby Company (www.eebee.com), creator of the TV series eebee’s adventures and line of baby/toddler aimed developmental toys and books, launches its first eebee’s app, eebee’s baby learning appventures for iOS devices. The free app features six video adventures that are accessible via a baby-friendly menu (meaning moms and dads can use it easily too!) all you have to do is tap a picture of eebee at play to launch a specific adventure, and tap on the icon of eebee on a scooter to return to the menu. The adventures showcase how little kids and parents can use every day activities to create learning experiences  such as bath time as a chance to play fill and spill games, do sing or float experiments and water flow play.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Tim Palen inks a new long-term deal to serve as Chief Marketing Officer for Lionsgate Films. Palen, who joined the company ten years ago at VP/Theatrical Marketing, will continue to oversee Lionsgate Films’ North American theatrical marketing campaigns, strategy media, creative advertising and digital media efforts, as well as continuing to supervise the company’s corporate branding activities. Palen is credited with leading the marketing initiative for the studios recent success The Hunger Games. Palen was previously Lionsgate’s Co-President of Theatrical Marketing.
