Good morning. It’s Thursday, April 24, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

We’ve got an Eloise!  HandMade Films and director Charles Shyer have cast Australia actress, Jordana Beatty (9), from 4,000 girls who auditioned, in the lead role of the live-action feature film Eloise in Paris.  Beatty joins the cast that already includes Uma Thurman, who, as previously announced, will play the Nanny.  Co-written by Shyer and his daughter Hallie Meyers-Shyer and Larry Spencer, filming is set to begin August 12 in Paris, NY and the south of France.  The movie is based on the Eloise books by author Kay Thompson and illustrated by Hilary Knight.

Shaftesbury Films and Platt Productions are re-teaming to produce Booky’s Crush (2-hours), the third in a series of family-targeted Booky TV movie specials for CBC Television (Canada).  Also returning for the new Booky TV is actress Megan Follows, who will reprise the role of Francie Thomson.   With production expected to begin later this year, Booky’s Crush is produced by Platt Productions and Shaftesbury Films, in association with CBC Television, and is slated to air on CBC in February 2009.  The Booky movies are all set in 1930s Toronto and are based on the book trilogy by author Bernice Thurman Hunter; her other books are also good, I remember is particular, The Girls Left Behind.


Nick Jr. premieres the new Go, Diego, Go! special, It’s A Bug’s World, on Monday, May 12 at 9:30a.  The special is part of a bug-themed week on Nick Jr. (May 12-16), which includes a new episode of The Backyardigans, What’s Bugging You?, on Monday (May 12, 9a) as well as episodes of the preschool blocks other series.  Beginning Monday, April 28, Nick Jr. will roll out a 2-minute sneak peek from It’s a Bug’s World and related content across various platforms including: VOD  featuring 2-minute sneak peek and additional episodes of Go, Diego, Go on Comcast, Charter, Cablevision, Verizon Fios and Cox; Nick Jr. Video will stream the sneak peek and clips of the special along with other bug-themed episodes of Go, Diego, Go, via ; Wireless carriers will also offer the peek as well as themed clips from the series.

Corus Entertainment’s YTV and Treehouse are making seven Nickelodeon series available in Canada via iTunes, under a digital partnership with MTV Networks International.  Fans can purchase download episodes of a range of Nickelodeon series (CDN $1.99/episode) by visiting the YTV and Treehouse pages on iTunes, including episodes from: The Wonder Pets (season 1); SpongeBob SquarePants (seasons 1-5); Avatar: The Legend of Aang (season 2); Drake & Josh (seasons 1-4); Dora the Explorer (season 3); Blue’s Clues (season 2); and Blues Room (season 1).

BKN International AG has inked TV rights deals for its animated series Zorro: Generation Z (26×22).  Acquiring rights to the K6-12 targeted Zorro: Generation Z are: Span’s Telecinco and Clan TV/TVE; Pop Channel (UK); ATV (Hong Kong); Star TV (Greece); ABC (South Africa); Solimac (Malaysia); and TVY (Bulgaria).  These broadcasters join a host of others that previously signed on for the series.  BKN recently appointed Gulliver as the master toy distributor for the series, with agents in a range of countries, meanwhile BKN continues to for toy distributors in each country, who will acquire the product from Gulliver FOB China.

4Kids Entertainment inks deals with partners to represent its properties across Eastern Europe, South Africa, France and Germany.

  • 4Kids expands its relationship with Kidz Entertainment/EEMC, which will now license Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, including the 25th anniversary effort for the property and the new TMNT retro program for 2009, throughout Eastern Europe.  Additionally, Kidz takes on The Dog and The Cat photography properties.
  • In South Africa Character Licensing and Marketing (CLM), which already represents TMNT in the market, will add Monster Jam and Cabbage Pact Kids brands to its roster for the region.
  • In France, MJA Licensing will represent The Dog and The Cat photography.
  • In Germany, m4e (made for entertainment) will represent Dinosaur King.

Ion-TV shifts it schedule a bit, moving the live-action preschool series Mustard Pancakes to Fridays at 1:30p, beginning May 9, 2008.


Spain’s Imira Entertainment completes a licensing and merchandising deal in Italy for Lola & Virginia with RAI Trade, the commercial arm of RAI.  Under the pact, RAI Trade acquires merchandising rights for the property across Italy.  Lola & Virginia will begin airing daily on RAI 2 (Italy) from September 2008.  Elsewhere, Panini is ready to a Lola & Virginia publishing line across Italy, Spain, Portugal and Brazil, which will feature sticker stack books, story albums, puzzle and coloring books.  Additionally, Imira has signed a pact with Nintendo DS to develop a videogame based on the series, which will launch in select territories.

Sesame Workshop names Plus Licens as its licensing representative in Eastern Europe and Scandinavia beginning this month.  Under the deal, Plus Licens will oversee the Sesame brand across markets where Sesame programming is currently, or will soon be broadcasted including: SVT (Sweden); NRK (Norway); DR (Denmark); RUV (Iceland); MiniMax (Hungary, Czech Republic, Romania and Slovakia); and on Mini Mini (Poland).

BBC Worldwide (BBCWW) names several licensing and merchandising partners based on the preschool series In the Night Garden:

  • Golden Bear Products ltd. inks a deal to manufacture and distribute a line of nursery products (e.g. teethers, guggie toys, first activity fabric toys) based on the preschool brand across the UK.  The new line will be available from early 2009.  In addition, BBCWW has granted Golden Bear non-exclusive global manufacturing rights to supply its appointed licensees.
  • Vivid Imaginations is named to develop a line of range of infant arts and crafts products for In the Night Garden under the Crayola Beginnings brand in the UK and Ireland.
  • DanJam Toys is appointed to develop traditional wooden toys based on the preschool series for retail in the UK, beginning June 2008.


Today is Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, with the 2008 theme, Making Choices for a Better World.  This year the annual program expanded its parameters to include kids up to 18-years-old.  2009 will see the Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day effort expand around the world.

Marvel Entertainment appoints Ira Rubenstein as EVP of its newly launched Global Digital Media Group.  He will oversee and expand Marvel’s digital distribution strategy across all media and platforms, including , , and Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited as well as via digital video, animated content, mobile games, casual games and strategic partnerships.  Rubenstein, who spent the last 12+ years with Sony, most recently as EVP/Sony Pictures Digital, will relocate to Marvel’s HQ in NYC and will report to John Turitzin EVP/Office of the Chief Executive.
