Cynopsis: Kids!
04/22/10

Good morning. It’s Thursday, April 22, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

The kids advertising upfront season continued yesterday with Cartoon Network‘s annual presentation at the Time Warner Center in NYC, during which the network unveiled that among its sports-centric programming, it will host the first ever kids sports awards, Cartoon Network’s Hall of Game, as part of its plan to broaden program offerings for its 2010-2011 season.  The network also presented 25 new series, TV movies, and specials, including sneak peeks at the new CGI animated The Looney Tunes Show, and the previously announced live-action series Unnatural History and Tower Prep, the four animated shows that will make up the quarter-hour comedy block, and its newest series Adventure Time, as well as 13 returning series, featuring a mix of animated and live-action shows.  The presentation featured appearances by Tony Gonzalez (NFL – Atlanta Falcons/tight-end) supporting the new season of the short-form series My Dad’s A Pro, which will star his son Nikko (9), Destroy Build Destroy host, musician Andrew W.K., and the three stars of Dude, What Would Happen.

New Series

  • The Looney Tunes Show – A new CG animated series starring the Looney Tunes gang in half-hour adventures set in the suburbs, moving away from the old 7-minute Looney Tunes stories set in the woods.  The new series also features 2-minute music videos featuring the characters and called Merrie Melodies, and 2.5-minute CG shorts.  Produced by Warner Bros. Animation.
  • Young Justice  produced by Warner Bros. Animation and based on characters from DC Comics, teen characters of Young Justice, including Robin, Aqualad, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian and Artemis, work to find out whether they have what it takes to be real heroes.

  • MAD an animated sketch comedy, MAD is produced by Warner Bros. Animation and inspired by MAD magazine, which is published by DC Comics.  Expect a mix of animation styles, classic MAD magazine characters such as Alfred E. Neuman and Spy vs. Spy, and, of course, parodies of everything.
  • Robotomy  the animated series revolves around two outsider teen high school droids, who want to fit in and yet who are only slightly less horrific than the ultra-powerful robots that populate their planet, Killglobe.  Created by Michael Buckley (The Sisters Grimm) and Joe Deasy, the series will be produced in NY.
  • Secret Mountain Fort Awesome  the animated series follows a group of dim-witted underground monsters, unleashed through a portal to the world, as they seek escape from humans, who treat them as second class citizens.  Created by writer/artist Pete Browngardt (Chowder), the series is produced at Cartoon Network.
  • Regular Show – follows two groundskeepers and best pals, Mordecai (a six-foot-tall blue jay) and Rigby (a hyperactive raccoon) who entertain themselves any way they can, much to the displeasure of their boss, Benson (who is a gumball machine), and to the delight of Pops (an older, lollipop-headed man).  Created by J. G. Quintel (he worked on Flapjack and Camp Lazlo), the series will be produced at Cartoon Network Studios.

New Specials/Movies

  • Cartoon Network’s Hall of Game (1×90)  set to premiere in early 2011, the multi-platform awards show will be hosted by a celebrity and will invite viewers to vote for their favorites sports stars (pro and amateur) and sports moments of the year.  The special is created and produced by IMG Media.  The Sports Illustrated Group’s SI KIDS franchise will serve as the official media partner and the show will also feature SI KIDS’ SportsKid of the Year Award
  • KROG (working title, half-hour pilot)  the half-hour scripted, live0action comedy revolves around a monster costume band, sent from Middle Earth to take over the world, with a huge fan base. Lucky for us they are a better band than they are invaders.  Produced by Cartoon Network Studios, the show is created by Mark Rivers (Metalocolypse, TV Funhouse).
  • Lords Of Bad Axe (working title, 1×90)  the original movie is a comedy that follows what happens after a glitch in the system releases the bad guys from an online game into the real world forcing three high school gamers to join and work together to go up against them.  Created/written by Derek Guiley and David Schneiderman (both, Chasing Liberty, The Parent Trap 2), the TV movie is directed by Peter Lauer (Sons Of Tuscon, Chuck).
  • Firebreather (live-action)  the network’s first original all CG animated adventure movie, based on the comic book of the same name about an awkward high school kid who happens to breathe fire  and most protect the Earth.  Created by Phil Hester (The Wretch), the movie is penned by Jim Krieg (Ben 10: Alien Force) and is directed by Peter Chung (Aeon Flux).
  • Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster  a sequel to the network’s 2009 live-action movie Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins  the new movie will debut 4Q 2010, and will be released by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment on Blu-ray, DVD, OnDemand and for download.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Technicolor jumps into the world of original content with the formation of a team to develop and produce original kid-targeted animated programming content.  And with that the company has acquired its first literary property, Pete & Pickles, about an unlikely friendship of mismatched characters, by Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist Berkeley Breathed (Bloom County).  Joining the company are Jean MacCurdy and Fonda Snyder, who will team with Steven Wendland VP/Digital Productions, Technicolor, to manage the new group and lead the new initiative.  MacCurdy was formerly President, Warner Bros. Animation, and Snyder was co-founder and former President, Storyopolis Productions.  Wendland, who joined Technicolor in 2008, previously toiled for a decade at Mainframe Entertainment.  Technicolor’s animation studio, Paprikaas, is based in Bangalore, India.

Emma Roberts and Freddie Highmore are set to star in the new teen romance movie Homework, currently filming in NYC, per Variety.  Also featuring Alicia Silverstone, Elizabeth Reaser, Blair Underwood and Rita Wilson, Homework being produced by Gigi Films and Mint Pictures, with writer/director Gavin Wiesen at the helm.

Alan Cumming exits the delayed Broadway musical Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark, due to scheduling conflicts, per Variety.  Cumming had been set to play the role of the villainous Green Goblin.  Directed by Julie Taymor (The Lion King) and featuring music by U2’s Bono and The Edge, the show had been set to open this winter and was delayed by issues related to raising funds for the production.  Evan Rachel Wood, who had been set to play Mary Jane, pulled out of the show last month.  Reeve Carney is still set to star as Spider-Man, though there is no confirmation yet as to when the show will open.
