AMC‘s Upfront took place last night at New York’s 69th Regiment Armory, with a maze of rooms which featured interactive interpretations of all the big AMC shows such as The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, and Mad Men, among others. We’re talking bloody freaks, drunk secretaries, and very tall men (Freakshow). “One of my clients at McCann said, ‘Why didn’t you tell me there were going to be zombies here?'” said Scott Collins, Executive VP, National Advertising Sales of AMC and WE TV, with a chuckle. “I said, ‘Because you wouldn’t have shown up!'” But on the serious side, Collins expressed a lot of excitement about AMC’s new slate, especially Low Winter Sun, which he described as “totally stylized, a perfect sandwich between Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead. There will be no reason to change the channel.” Other programming highlights included:
Talking Bad, a special weekly, half-hour live after show, will analyze Breaking Bad‘s final eight episodes beginning Sunday, August 11 at 11p. The show will be produced by Michael Davies’ Embassy Row with Sony Pictures Television serving as the studio partner.
New spring and summer premieres were announced. Small Town Security returns for a second season on Thursday, May 9 at 10p, while Breaking Bad kicks off its final eight episodes on Sunday, August 11 at 9p.
In addition, Showville (produced by Storyvision Entertainment and distributed by Sony Pictures Television), a series about a small town talent show featuring local acts, debuts Thursday, May 23 at 9p. Low Winter Sun (co-production from Endemol Studios and AMC Studios), a contemporary story of murder, deception and corruption in a world where the line between cops and criminals is blurred, debuts Sunday, August 11 at 10p. Owner’s Manual (produced by Asylum Entertainment), which tests the most common divide among men who read the owner’s manual and those who don’t, debuts on Thursday, August 15 at 9p. The Pitch (produced by All3Media America), which focuses on creative advertising campaigns, debuts Thursday, August 15 at 10p.
Series renewals were announced for Talking Dead (a third season), Comic Book Men (a third season) and Freakshow (a second season).
The network also announced an overall deal with Rolin Jones (Boardwalk Empire, Smash, United States of Tara), where Jones will be writing and executive producing projects specifically for the network.
Targeting its growing “funseeker” audience, truTV is shifting half its lineup to comedic reality. The network revealed its new development slate today in New York. Here’s a look at what’s coming up.
New series:
In Panic Button, produced by Eleven Television, contestants must brave a haunted house without pushing a button that will allow them to escape.
Cash Dome Pawn, from 51 Minds Entertainment LLC, an Endemol Company, focuses on one of the wildest and most outrageous pawn shops in the country, Cash Dome, run by Josh “White Boy” Gallander.
Big Sam’s Kentucky (wt), from ITV Studios America in association with Leepson Bounds Entertainment.
Pilots:
A game show in the sky: Turbulence (from Howie Mandel’s Alevy Productions and FremantleMedia North America) follows contestants flying from one location to another, while completing a variety of challenges.
Payback with Trevor Moore (wt), which is being produced by Funny or Die, is a hidden camera prank show that gives people the chance to get light-hearted revenge on a friend/relative/significant other who has it coming.
Laugh Truck (wt), produced by NorthSouth Productions, features three friends competing against each other as they ride in the back of a moving truck.
In addition, truTV is extending several current series with new episode orders, including Guinness World Records Gone Wild! and Upload with Shaquille O’Neal, which join previously announced extensions of Impractical Jokers and Hardcore Pawn: Chicago.
Exclusive to Cynopsis: National Geographic Channel reports that its three-night, six hour event of The 80s: The Decade That Made Us scored a .8 HH rating and a .6 P2554 from Sunday, April 14 at 8 and 9p.m. to Tuesday, April 16 at 9 and 10 p.m. ET/PT. The Sunday night premiere of the miniseries also marked the highest rated Sunday since the premiere of Killing Lincoln on February 17. “People wrapped themselves in this event like legwarmers on Jane Fonda,” said CEO David Lyle. “This show is another example of how we’re expanding what people expect from the National Geographic Channel. It really expanded the understanding of the decade in smart and surprising ways. And I got to wear my tight white shorts again.”
HBO is extending the run of its freshman series, Vice, from eight to ten episodes. The show’s season finale on Friday, June 14 will focus on North Korea.
Actor and comedian Tracy Morgan will host the 2013 Billboard Music Awards, airing live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, May 19 at 8p on ABC. “I’m honored to be a part of one of music’s biggest nights,” said Morgan. “And how can you say no when Prince is going to be there?!” As host of the awards show, Morgan joins previously announced performers Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Bruno Mars, Miguel and the aforementioned Prince, who will be honored with a Billboard Icon Award.
Bravo Media‘s new docu-series, Princesses: Long Island will premiere June 2 at 9p. The show follows six college-educated young women from affluent areas of Long Island, who live pampered lifestyles in their parents’ homes, offering a window into their family dynamics and personal lives filled with labels, luxury and love trials. The series is produced for Bravo by True Entertainment.
Starz reports it has ordered a second season of Da Vinci’s Demons, following its first season weekend debut on Friday, April 12. More than 2.14 million total viewers tuned-in, making it the highest-rated premiere weekend ever for a Starz original series. Production of the new season is slated to begin in Wales in May 2013, with an on-air return expected in 2014.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kim Wayans (In Living Color) has been tapped for a guest starring role on the TV Land comedy Soul Man. She’ll play Dr. Owens in an upcoming season two episode to air in June.

Region 2 of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has dismissed all charges leveled against Atlas Media Corp. by the Writers Guild of America East (WGAE). Five months ago, Atlas Media employees presented Atlas with a petition signed by the majority of WGAE bargaining unit members stating that they no longer wished to be represented by the WGAE. After investigating the WGAE’s allegations concerning the petition, the labor board concluded that the employees and Atlas Media both had acted lawfully. As a result, the WGAE no longer represents any Atlas employees.
