Good morning. It’s Thursday, April 14, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

Starz Animation Toronto rebrands as Arc Production Animation & Visual Effects (  ).  Arc Productions is a partnership with majority ownership recently purchased by a Canadian investor group.  Starz LLC, a subsidiary of Liberty Media, remains a shareholder in the new Canadian operation.  The new management team plans to expand Arc Productions’ development slate to include independent productions and creation of intellectual property, as well as international co-productions.  In addition to its visual effects work on TV productions such as Camelot, Arc will continue to provide animation and visual effects work for Robosapien: Rebooted, a live-action family movie from Arad Productions, and Dolphin Tale, a fall 2011 release from Alcon Entertainment and Warner Bros.  Arc Productions recently produced the animation for the 3D feature film Gnomeo & Juliet for Disney’s Touchstone Pictures, and has just begun production on the stereoscopic CG animated feature OZ3D (working title), an adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s classic book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in partnership with Multiple Media Entertainment and Gigapix Studios.


Production company Chocolate Liberation Front (CLF) enters into a co-production deal with Ambience Entertainment, a content/production unit of Omnilab Media, to produce the new CGI TV series The Adventures of Figaro Pho (13×30, 39×7).  Simultaneously they have completed worldwide distribution partnerships for the property with ZDF Enterprises (Europe, Middle East, Africa), D360 (Canada), and ABC Commercial (rest of the world including the US, Australia, Asia and South America).  ABC Commercial is also the distributor of the original Figaro Pho shorts on which the new series is based.  The new series will be supported through the continued investment of the SAFC and additional investment from Screen Australia and Screen New South Wales.  Created and directed by Luke Jurevicius, Figaro Pho is a loveable, curious, mischievous, and sad character who happens to have many weird and wonderful phobias.  If he had any friends, his personality would be infectious, but Figaro is afraid of people and thus has no friends.  The creative team on The Adventures of Figaro Pho includes Creative Director Deane Taylor (A Nightmare Before Christmas, Popeye, The Pink Panther, Ren & Stimpy), Animation Director David Webster (Erky Perky series 1-3, Pop Pups), and writer Matthew Phipps (Figaro Pho, Man Friday Project).  The series is produced by Dan Fill (World of Infinite Curiosity, Wild Kratts Interactive, Kids In The Hall, Death Comes To Town Interactive, Angela Anaconda Online) and Frank Verheggen (Immigration Nation, Figaro Pho) with Executive Producers, Christopher Mapp (The Bank Job, W, Tomorrow When the War Began, Killer Elite) and Michael Boughen (The Loved Ones, Tomorrow When the War Began, Killer


A new special Mother’s Day (El Dia de la Madre)) episode of the animated series Curious George will celebrate Hispanic heritage and Latina moms is set to premiere on PBS Kids, Friday, May 6, 2011 (check local listings).  The episode, Mother’s Day Surprise, features George helping Marco surprise his Mami with a party, which features unique cultural items, like a pinata, and foods.  Curious George is currently in its fifth season.  Additionally, two new Curious George ( online educational game will bow, Monkey Moves, which gets kids up and moving with George, and the other invites kids to help George and Marco chose, decorate and break open a pinata, both feature Spanish words, numbers, colors and other things.  Leading up to the Mother’s Day episode, PBS Kids will re-air two episode of Curious George featuring George’s new friend Marco, on Tuesday, May 3 and Thursday, May 5.  Based on the Curious George books by Margret and H.A. Rey, the series is a production of Imagine Entertainment, WGBH Boston, and Universal Studios Family Productions.  Curious George is funded by public television viewers, with national corporate sponsorship provided by Chuck E. Cheese’s and Rainforest Cafe.

France’s Canal+ acquires the broadcast rights to the 2D animated series Action Dad (26×22) from LA-based Toonzone Studios.  Targeted to K6-11, Action Dad is produced by Toonzone and financed by the Animation Development Company.  The series will debut on Canal+ Family in 2012 and Teletoon (France) 2013

The Hub launches a cross-platform effort, including an online event, coloring pages and a My Little Pony Friendship is Magic marathon to celebrate the My Little Pony origins episode, The Cutie Mark Chronicles, on Friday, April 15 at 1:30p.  In the episode fans will learn the origins of some of the ponies’ signature “Cutie Marks”.  The series is produced by Hasbro Studios.  Leading up to the episode, a special online event, My Little Pony Tales ( ), will run thru Saturday, April 16, where they can view a clip from the episode.  Additionally, online fans can read three short stories about how Rainbow Dash got her Cutie Mark and then choose which option they like most, and when the episode airs on Friday, find out which story was true.  After choosing their favorite ending, fans will be directed to Hasbro’s website where there will be downloadable coloring pages of the ponies.  Finally, The Hub will feature a My Little Pony two-hour marathon, the My Little Pony Mega Cutie Mark-a-thon, on Saturday, April 16, 9-11a, which will feature a repeat of The Cutie Mark Chronicles (10:30a).

Chello Central Europe will launch its new Hungarian kid/tween 7-14 aimed network, Megamax, on Monday, April 18, 2011, per Broadband TV News.  The channel’s programming line-up includes Transformers, Battle Force, Twisted Whiskers, Dex Hamilton, Iron Kid, and Metajets.

KCET, the public television channel serving Southern and Central California, will debut the new live-action preschool program The Dreamsters with a one-hour preview on Mother’s Day, May 8 at 8p.  The early learning program features the Dreamster characters, PJ the DJ, Starbright, and Snore, who encourages a love of music, dance, art and storytelling. Created by series producer/songwriter Steve Syatt, The Dreamsters features guest artists including Brian Setzer (Brian Setzer Orchestra, The Stray Cats), Davy Jones (The Monkees), Tommy James (Tommy James and the Shondelles), Steve Lawrence (Steve and Edie), and Ron Dante (The Archies), among others.  The Dreamsters is executive produced by Syatt, Mike Medavoy, Arnold Messer and David Cooper.

National Geographic Kids Entertainment (NGKE) inks news sales for three of its kid-targeted TV series Are We There Yet? World Adventure, Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies, and Toot & Puddle.

  • Are We There Yet? World Adventure has been picked up in a new deal with Turkey’s Turkuvaz Media Group for ATV and the new Minika kids TV channel, and with Korea Skylife and Estonia’s ETV.  The series is a Sinking Ship Entertainment production produced in association with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), Treehouse TV (Canada), and NGKE.  NGKE distributes the series in the US and internationally.
  • BBC Worldwide picks up the animated preschool series Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies for its CBeebies channel feeds in Africa and Asia.  Renewal deals for Mama Mirabelle include PBS (US), Disney Junior in Australia and New Zealand, and Canal Plus
  • (Poland).  Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies is a NGKE and King Rollo Films production in partnership with CBeebies (UK).

  • Toot & Puddle has been acquired by RTS (Switzerland).  Based on the books by Holly Hobbie, the animated preschool series is a Mercury Filmworks production in partnership with NGKE.


American Greetings Properties (AGP) furthers its Care Bears apparel program in the UK by inking deals with two licensees.  Somerbond signs on to launch a range of fashion nightwear, loungewear, and underwear at retailers including Primark and Pennies.  Trademark Products renews its deal to supply the entertainment and online market, including HMV and, with edgy and humorous prints on T-shirts and sweats.

Hit Entertainment announces this month UK retailer John Lewis begins launching the new Mattel line of products based on the CGI Angelina Ballerina TV series.  The new product line includes figures, play-sets, dolls and plush. The series can be seen on Nick Jr UK.  Mattel is the global master toy licensee for the brand.

Galleon Holdings‘ board changes as it restructures to focus on its digital content publishing operations in China, specifically in the online gaming market, after several difficult years.  Galleon directors Stephen Green and Len Dunne have officially resigned from Galleon’s board, but will remain on to consult on intellectual property development and management, under the new Corinthian Entertainment, of which Green and Dunne are directors.  Corinthian Ent. will get a “success only fee” of 20% of the net proceeds from the sale or licensing of Galleon’s media assets as agreed or introduced to Galleon for an initial period until June 30 2011.  In the interim, David Wong, Executive Chairman, will run the day to day of the Company.  New board appointments are expected soon.  Galleon’s kid/family properties include Super Soccer Star, Skunk Fu!, Apollo’s Pad, and Sokator-442.
