Cynopsis: DIGITAL
4/12/07
Good Morning, it’s Thursday, April 12, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
CBS fired a producer for plagiarizing a Wall Street Story in a videoblog post hosted by Katie Couric. The April 4 “Notebook” entry was based on a “Moving On” column by Jeffrey Zaslow, about the usefulness of libraries. The piece ran on March 15.
Comcast will buy movie ticket site Fandango as part of the planned launch of a new online entertainment business. The site, to be called Fancast.com, will serve as a portal to search for and watch online video entertainment.
Apple added movie titles from MGM to its iTunes library, which boasts Hollywood’s biggest archive of movies. Around 4,000 movies will be added to the store in the coming weeks, including Academy Award winners Rocky and Dances With Wolves. The MGM library will boost iTunes’ feature film selection dramatically-only 500 Disney, Paramount and Lionsgate titles are currently available, far less than rivals such as Movielink and CinemaNow. It should also help consumers justify the purchase of the $299 Apple TV, which ports iTunes purchases to the television.
Local TV stations are putting more effort into their websites these days, according to a round up in The Wall Street Journal. Hearst-Argyle Television is commended for offering exclusive online content, helping increase videos streamed to 38 million on its 29 station sites last year, an increase of 29%. Young Broadcasting’s WKRN in Nashville has started a host of blogs. Meredith’s WNEM in Flint, MI produced a talent show for seniors. NBC-owned WCAU in Philadelphia is getting ready to launch a new site DigPhilly that will include a video-sharing component.
CBS Mobile is distributing three-to-five minute clips of country artist Taylor Swift to provide fans with a video diary of her life on the road. Swift is nominated for Top New Female Vocalist for the 42nd Annual Academy of Country Music Awards, to be broadcast on CBS May 15 at 8 pm ET/PT.
Digital music start up TuneCore is luring artists with a flat-fee based business model that charges artists only what it costs to distribute their music. TuneCore passes along the wholesale price it can get from digital music stores like iTunes (around 62 cents, according to wsj.com), then tacks on minimal fees that aren’t attached to actual sales. The company is currently distributing about 16,000 albums of music including Ziggy Marley and MC Hammer.
TeenCrunch launched a series of websites built to promote community networking and content sharing among teens:
- TeenHollywood-teen celebrity news, official celebrity sites and fan sites
- Iconator -IM buddy icons, mobile wallpaper and personal profile page avatar community
- mp3Masher -mp3 audio file storage facility and audio mixing tool including access to licensed tracks
- LyricsSpot-home of over a million popular song lyrics
- DollWizard-customizable avatar/doll creators
- FVX-a network of MySpace and other social network layout generators, personalization tools and widget drops
The sites will be represented to advertisers by Gorilla Nation.
Norman Lear’s Declare Yourself is expanding its online get-out-the-vote effort this year. This year’s campaign will include partnerships with Clear Channel and Comedy Central, who will join Yahoo!, MySpace, YouTube, Google, Friendster, Evite and Good Search in driving young people to DeclareYourself.com to register to vote. Ugly Betty‘s America Ferrera and Heroes‘ Hayden Panettiere are spokespeople. Declare Yourself registered 1.2 million voters in 2004, when 47% of 18-24 year olds turned out, an increase of 11% from 2000.
Social networking site Facebook introduced several new features as part of its goal to transition from a college dating site to a broad-based social networking tool. New features include improved visual-based navigation tools and portal pages to give users a quick look at groups they might want to join. The site also improved privacy controls after a mishap last September that made the personal information of many of its users viewable to the community-at-large. Facebook ranks #2 among social networking sites behind MySpace, with over 19 million active users.
The Webby Awards nominees were announced yesterday, as chosen by the prestigious International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences and digital luminaries such as Beck, Rob Glaser and Vint Cerf. (The awards date back to 1996, but if internet years are like dog years, that makes them over 70). There are quite a few nominees, so look for one category each day for the next several days:

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
IndustryNext joined the race to come up with a technical solution to stem the flow of video piracy on the net with the beta launch of Enscramble. Available in three different levels of encoding quality, enscramble delivers video from a standard server in an encrypted format using a proprietary algorithm that allows the content provider to authenticate the domain before de-scrambling the image. The company says the product is already being tested by “major media and entertainment companies,” but would not specify which.
Hollywood-based media and optical technology firm Crest Digital formed a partnership with the China Film Group to deliver a range of home entertainment and technology software content to mainland China consumers via multiple digital platforms. The two companies will team up on DVD and CD manufacturing, VOD delivery, IPTV streaming and anti-piracy initiatives.
Internet Broadcasting and Monster Worldwide expanded their existing relationship. The career-builder site will add 54 local TV sites to the portfolio of 66 sites it currently serves for IB.
Web 2.0 companies such as photo/video sharing site Photobucket.com haven’t given up on the idea of an IPO, but the game has changed since the .com glory days as investors demand a pattern of profitability before a company can be taken public, according to Forbes.com. However, the IPO is not necessarily the goal of web 2.0 ventures, notes a report on Silicon Valley start-ups in the most recent Bloomberg Markets. The open source movement–enabling the distribution of free software code–has made it cheaper than ever to create a new company, and many young entrepreneurs are in it to actually see what they can build this time around.
Pay-as-you-go cell phone service Kajeet formed a partnership with Nickelodeon to offer downloadable ringtones, wallpapers and games branded with the characters from shows including The Rugrats, The Fairly OddParents and SpongeBob SquarePants. The promotional deal is tied to upcoming TV events starting with an episode of SpongeBob airing April 13.
Ebay and Google aren’t the only players in the digital ad delivery space. Softwave Media Exchange is also vying to provide a digital solution to buying and selling TV spots, according to TVNewsday.com, although it has a stronger foothold in radio. Rather than build an auction system, the Irvington, N.Y.-based SWMX is trying to automate the process of buying and selling ads by giving users data on geography, demographics and media to help sales reps pinpoint the best outlets for their campaigns. Meanwhile the Television Bureau of Advertising continues to work on its ePort system to provide software for electronic invoicing that can be updated dynamically as changes are made to the original ad buy.
A high-frequency tone, originally developed by Welsh company Compound Security Systems as a deterrent against unwanted gatherings of youth, is being utilized in an interactive TV ad by KFC. After watching the spot kids, who are the only ones who can hear the tone, can go to KFC.com to identify exactly when it was played. The first 1,000 correct entrants win a $10 meal voucher.
Interpublic acquired search engine marketing firm Reprise Media known for using search to build integrated, cross-channel marketing programs. Reprise was named “Search Agency of the Year” in 2006 by the Online Media, Marketing and Advertising group (OMMA).
Disney Mobile released some information about its subscribers on the eve of its first anniversary. About 56% of its customers are adults and 44% are children. Roughly 30% of its subscribers use its GPS location-tracking service that allows parents find out where their kids are. Disney said 70% of tracking requests are made from handsets while 30% of are made from the web.
Online sales of digital music continue to climb, according to research firm In-Stat. Online sales accounted for 6% of the worldwide music market in 2006, up from 4% in 2005, and are expected to represent more than a quarter of total sales by 2011. Its latest research found that 74% of respondents downloaded music in 2006, compared to 48% in 2005.
Amp’d Mobile‘s subscriber base grew by 70% during the first quarter from the previous quarter to about 175,000 customers. The branded mobile service will be available in Wal-Mart stores beginning this summer.
Not surprisingly, teens are dying to get their hands on the iPhone. A new survey by Piper Jaffray found 85% of teens queried had heard of the $500 device and 25% said they are willing to buy one, despite the price. No analysis was provided on the amount of nagging it will take to get Mom and Dad to spring for one.
Here are the top sites adults used to view video content online in 2006, from Piper Jaffray. The numbers represent the percentage of respondents who said they viewed video on these sites:
- YouTube 43.5%
- TV Network Sites 41%
- Google Video 26.5%
- MSN Video 24.5%
- Yahoo! Video 22%
- MySpace 16.5%
- AOL 13.5%
- Other 17.5%
To continue with the movie site theme, how about a site to help you pick a movie for your child that’s actually written by kids themselves! (Talk about letting the inmates run the asylum…) KidsPickFlicks.com was started by a 12-year old named Cole who actually launched the site when he was nine. Cole writes the main review for each film himself, then encourages other kids to submit their own reviews. Not only is this an invaluable reference tool for parents trying to spend their box office dough judiciously, but the kids’ reviews are as good as some of what one reads in the mainstream adult press. Here’s a sample–you be the judge:
- –Ghost Rider is flaming fantastic! Ghost Rider is about a man who sold his soul to the devil to save his father who died right after the deal was made. There is an incredible amount of horror, violence, and action, which makes this movie good. It would be very scary to kids 9 and under. However, if you’re 10 and up, don’t ride past this movie.

A new website will be featured here everyday for you to check out. Some are TV-centric, some creative, some just plain strange.
