Good morning. It’s Thursday, April 11, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Today’s Top Headlines
We’ve got kids news covered for you daily during Upfront season…
Japanese Invasion: Marblemedia is developing an adaptation of I Survived a Japanese Game Show called Japanizi: Going, Going, Gong!, and Disney XD is already signed on to carry it. The show will debut on the network in the fall and will launch in 2014 on Disney Channels in Europe, Middle East, Africa and parts of Asia Pacific via an agreement with Distribution 360. In this adaptation, audiences will experience the zany world of Japanese game show culture complete with conveyor belts, dizzy chairs, giant fans and Velcro walls. All 40 half-hour episodes will feature four teams of two contestants who are dropped into a world filled with crazy costumes, physical gags, over-the-top stunts and wild characters. Audiences at home will be able to immerse themselves in the experience through an interactive web site and a second screen-enhanced mobile app. “The Japanese game show genre is inherently random and frenetic, loaded with physical humor that is sure to entertain families,” said Matt Hornburg, co-CEO/executive producer at Marblemedia. Canadian broadcaster YTV and Canadian French language network will also begin carrying the show this spring.
The names Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jack Black don’t often appear in the same sentence, but that could all be changing. Webber has commissioned stage rights to School of Rock, the PG-13, Black-starring, Richard Linklater-directed film and plans to bring it to the musical theater. The 2003 movie’s soundtrack features songs from the Doors, Led Zeppelin, The Who and a bunch of other classic rockers Lloyd said he intends to integrate into the stage version.
PROGRAMMING PICKS
ABC is mining the Mouse as it looks to future content development. Among the pilots planned for the Disney-owned network’s next television season is a drama based on the Disney theme park rollercoaster Big Thunder Mountain Railroad; Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., a series based on characters from last year’s Marvel Entertainment movie “The Avengers”; and the much-anticipated Once: Wonderland, a spinoff of fairy tale series Once Upon a Time, that focuses on Alice and friends.
DIGITAL UPDATE
It’s game on for Cartoon Network’s Regular Show. The Emmy-winning series, about best pals who just happen to be a six-foot-tall blue jay and hyperactive raccoon, is getting its first-ever video game publishing deal, with D3Publisher. The deal continues the strategic partnership between D3P and Cartoon, which already includes the global Ben 10 interactive franchise and last year’s Nintendo DS and 3DS release Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why’d You Steal Our Garbage?!

WGBH Boston is headed back to school. Through a one-year research grant from the John Templeton Foundation, the producer of PBS’ perennial hit Arthur is conducting a research project with Tufts University that will design and pilot an interactive comic book that features characters from the Arthur series promoting character development, positive decision-making and prosocial behavior in children. The project is part of a new collaboration with the Institute of Applied Research in Youth Development (IARYD) at Tufts’ School of Arts and Sciences and its Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Development. The interactive comic book will roll out in the fall as part of a cross-age buddy program, matching first and second graders with older students in elementary schools in Massachusetts.
The producers of Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark and their former director, Julie Taymor, reached a settlement in their yearlong legal battle over profits, copyright claims, and artistic credit, The New York Times reports. Time to dig out that patterned sweater. The Cosby Show’s Huxtables are the ’80s television family we would most want to be adopted by. This according to a pop culture survey Nat Geo Channel commissioned as research for its upcoming miniseries The 80s: The Decade that Made Us. The Huxtables nabbed 38% of the vote, followed by Family Ties’ the Keatons and Dallas’ the Ewings, tied for second with 17% each. Growing Pains’ the Seavers and Diff’rent Strokes’ Drummonds rounded out the top five.
