Good morning. It’s Monday, February 14, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Who’s looking to acquire HIT Entertainment from the private equity group Apax Partners now? Seems that Haim Saban and his Saban Brands and former Disney CEO Michael Eisner are, per Bloomberg.  Apax is looking for beds of $1 billion for HIT, which owns Thomas the Tank Engine, but may only have been getting offers of $500 million, which the report attributes to several unnamed sources.  Saban is said to discussing HIT assets, while Eisner is said to be teaming with Madison Dearborn Partners, a private equity firm.  Companies previously showing interest in HIT include Disney, Viacom, Mattel and Hasbro.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Astral’s Family Channel (Canada) will premiere Disney Channel‘s Original Movie The Suite Life Movie on Friday, March 25 at 8p, the same day and date as the US premiere of the movie on Disney Channel.  The movie, which of stars Cole and Dylan Sprouse and the cast the two Suite Life series, was filmed on location in Vancouver, B.C.  Immediately following the TV movie premiere at 9:30p, Family Channel will offer a sneak peek of its new Canadian original series, Really Me.  The series revolves around Maddy, an ordinary-turned-famous 15-year-old who becomes the star of her own reality TV show for a year.  That day, Family Channel will also host a seven-episode marathon of The Suite Life on Deck, March 25, from 2p, leading up to an evening of new episodes of What’s Up, Warthogs!, Shake It UP, Wingin’ It, Wizards of Waverly Place, and The Suite Life on Deck, and the movie.

Animation studio Blue-Zoo is sending out invitations to 300+ schools across the UK, offering them the chance to participate in workshops run by Laura Ellison, the voice of Olive (a young Ostrich on her imaginary travels) in the new preschool series Olive the Ostrich (48 episodes).  Kids will be afforded the opportunity to create artwork that will be used as props, backgrounds and characters in Olive’s imaginary world, animated into 2D for each episode. Olive the Ostrich is scheduled to launch on Nickelodeon’s preschool channel Nick Jr UK in 2011.  The project is put together in association with The Princes Foundation for Children & the Arts, Nickelodeon UK, and Blue-Zoo.  The Prince’s Foundation for Children & the Arts advised Blue-Zoo on the schools to be invited into the project from areas that lack funding for the arts. From the 300 schools, 46 schools will be chosen as ‘content creators’ for one episode each. Blue-Zoo will work closely with kids to help educate and excite them about the process of storytelling, art and filmmaking.

Little Tikes launches Little Tikes Mobile Land, its first free interactive driving game app aimed at K3-5 for the iPhone.  Developed by an early childhood education expert, Little Tikes Mobile Land features four driving games designed to help kids develop cognitive skills through questions about shapes, color, numbers and word recognition.

Anchor Bay Entertainment is set to release new kid-targeted DVDs this spring.

  • The new Chuggington DVD, Chuggers To The Rescue, will be available at retail from April 5, 2011. Additional releases in the Chuggington DVD series from Anchor Bay are set for release in 2011, including It’s Training Time and Wheels To The Rails.  From Ludorum, the second season of the CGI animated Chuggington TV series launches today as part of the new Disney Junior block, which also officially launches today (F/K/A Playhouse Disney), on Disney Channel.  Chuggington episodes also are available on iTunes.
  • Wubbzy’s Egg-Cellent Easter, a new holiday-themed DVD form the Nick Jr. series Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!, will be released by Anchor Bay nationwide on Tuesday, March 1, 2011.  The title is comprised of six episodes featuring Wubbzy and his pals.  Wubbzy’s Egg-Cellent Easter also includes holiday-themed coloring sheets and activity pages.  Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! is produced by Bolder Media in association with Film Roman Animation Studio, a unit of Starz Media.  Susan Miller of Bolder Media and Mixed Media Group and Fred Seibert of Bolder Media and Frederator Studios, are executive producers on the preschool series created Bob Boyle, also executive producer.

Max & Ruby: Rainy Day Play!, a new DVD title created by Nickelodeon Home Entertainment and distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment is set for release on April 12, 2011.  Nickelodeon’s Max & Ruby animated series is based on the kid’s books by Rosemary Wells, which features sibling bunnies Max & Ruby as they play together and resolve their differences by working it out together.

Las Estaciones (The Seasons), the new title in the Spanish for Kids DVD series is slated to release on March 22, 2011.  Produced by Whistlefritz, Spanish for Kids is a preschool-targeted Spanish immersion DVD series that features Fritzi, an animated mouse that interacts with human kids and adults to help teach Spanish.  In this new DVD title Fritzi and friends help kids learn about the seasons.

TOY FAIR/MARKETING/LICENSING

Bananagrams, Inc. ( www.bananagrams.com ), the folks behind the Bananagrams anagram game, introduces two new games.  The first is Zip-It, a two-player crossword race game that features 24 letter cubes in a cloth pouch, which can be played anywhere.  For kids 5+ is Fruitominoes, which is a fruity and colorful game features 28 dominoes.

Mind Candy, online games developer and publisher of moshimonsters.com, introduces the new Moshi Monsters toy line in the US this week through its US distribution partner Spin Master at the New York Toy Fair.  The Moshi Monsters toy line from master toy partner Vivid debuted recently in the UK.  The Moshi Monsters range being unveiled at the show includes soft toys based on the six key monster characters, Poppet, Katsuma, Diavlo, Zommer, Furi and Luvli as well as collectable figures based on the collectable ‘Moshlings’ (Pets of pet monsters).  Many of the products incorporate special codes, which unlock extra’s on the website.  Moshi Monsters licensees and products currently available in the UK include Moshi Bandz, Membership Cards and Gift Packs (produced in-house), Topps (trading cards), Winning Movies (top trumps), Danilo (calendars), GB Eye (posters), and Penguin (books).  Following the toy launch in the US, Mind Candy plans to grow its North American licensing program.

Marvel Entertainment and Stride Rite Children’s Group further their relationship with a new partnership that expands Stride Rite’s Marvel Entertainment footwear program for kids.  As part of the multi-year licensing deal, Stride Rite will design, develop, manufacture and distribute a kid’s footwear collection based on the Super Heroes in the Marvel Universe, including Spider-Man, Captain America and Iron Man.  The new Marvel Super Heroes line will feature new designs and innovations, such as the Super Slingshot technology by Stride Rite.  The line (sizes toddler 7 – youth 5) includes athletics, sport shoes and casual sandals.  Stride Rite will unveil the new Spider-Man Web-Slinger shoe in Stride Rite stores as well as other retailers across the US and Canada for Holiday 2011.  Additional footwear from the Marvel collection will roll out throughout 2012.

HIT Entertainment teams with Betty Crocker to cook up the new Thomas & Friends themed fruit flavored snacks.  Targeted to kids and parents, the Thomas & Friends Fruit Flavored Snacks, which will come in six flavors (80 calories per pouch), will be available at grocery stores and mass market retailers across the US from June 2011. Betty Crocker is a consumer brand of General Mills.

Crayola adds two new products to its outdoor art activities line. Both products are slated to be available at retail from March 2011.

  • Washable Glow Chalk is glow-in-the dark chalk that will show up for up to four hours in the dark, which works by mixing the colored chalk powder, glow activator and water together and then pouring into the chalk mold tray.  After letting it harden (30 minutes) it is ready to go.
  • The Washable Sidewalk Tattoos offers kids detailed outlines they can color in to create their drawings.  Kids can peel back the clear sheet and place the sidewalk tattoo face down onto a driveway/sidewalk. Then use the rubbing tool to make instant outlines in bugs or forest animals that can then be colored in with sidewalk chalk, crayons or paint.

Ravensburger, a German toy and game manufacturer, heads to American International Toy Fair in NY with a range of products  some of which include:

  • Ravensburger is offering a 32,256-piece jigsaw puzzle (the world’s largest per the Guinness Book of World Records), The Keith Haring: Double Retrospect ($299.99).  The puzzle, commercially available, features work of pop artist Keith Haring on 32 individual, brightly colored images, that weighs 42 lbs, and should take an estimated 400 hours to complete at which time it will be more than 17×6 feet.  Better yet, the puzzle, available from March 2011, comes with its own hand truck!
  • The company will also be offering a 25th anniversary edition of its family-targeted Labyrinth game, and extensions of Labyrinth, as well as the introduction of its new games Xoomy arts & crafts collection.  Additionally, Ravensburger re-launches its Imagine, Play, Discover line features six of its most popular educational games for younger kids with new looks: Snail’s Pace Race; Colorama; Tell-A-Story; Mystery Garden; Rivers, Roads & Rails; and Race to the Roof.  The preschool line will also feature the new Jolly Octopus game, which features a ticklish battery operated octopus that sits on his stash of crabs as he protects them (with his tentacles) from players that try to grab them with tongs.
  • The company brings Whoowasit?, its “who done it” board game with an electronic feature, to the US.  Targeted to K7+, the game aims to hone their communication and team-playing skills as they try to defeat the evil wizard in Whoowasit?  In the game, players make their way room to room to find clues as to who stole the magical ring from the king by the evil wizard, while playing against a running clock.  Along the way players meet up with talking animals and a magical treasure chest that help solve the mystery.
  • Other new puzzle being offered include: for younger kids the Animal Planet puzzle collection of ten puzzles (100  1,000 pieces), including Discovery & Learn concepts  which comes with fact booklets); new Highlights brand hidden picture puzzles (range 35-100 pieces); the 3D puzzlepyramid puzzles are triangle shaped and feature hinged pieces that snap together, with different designs on either side.  The first collection includes five 240-piece designs, featuring Impressions of Africa, Sunset in the Desert, Essence of Egypt, Spirit of the Seas, and Enchanted Dram World; new puzzleball collection featuring artwork by Dick Termes (known for his spherical work); and finally the new 2D WASGIJ? Puzzles – two collections WASGIJ? Destiny and WASGIJ? Mystery.
