CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

04/08/06

Good Morning. It’s Friday, April 8, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

And the other shoe has dropped.  Meredith Vieira will get a new view – from the couch of NBC’s Today. She will stick with the ABC daytime network series The View thru the May sweeps, and will join NBC in September. Vieira also has two years left on her contract with Buena Vista Television to host the syndicated daytime series Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, tho there is no information yet what will happen with that gig. Conceivably she can continue to do both, as Millionaire tapes daily at two in the afternoon.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

At Fox, Steven Spielberg will be looking for the next great filmmaker in American Idol fashion with executive producer Mark Burnett, in a show titled On the Lot. The action takes place on the lot at DreamWorks where aspiring young filmmakers will compete for a development deal with the studio.  Don’t expect Spielberg to be appear weekly to judge the contestants works – that aspect of the show is still being worked out.  As is the format for Idol, the show will include two airings a week beginning some time during the 2006-07 television season, and after one night of viewing and judging the short films by the players, the second night will reveal the audiences’ choice for who will be eliminated.

CSTV will air a marathon tribute to the NCAA Division 1 Women’s National Basketball champs, the Lady Terrapins, called Maryland Women’s Basketball: Under the Shell. All 13 episodes will air consecutively beginning today at 1p.

As you ink in your network upfront dance card, here’s a new one you may not have counted on — 20th Television’s MyNetwork TV will have its own upfront on the morning of Tuesday, May 16.

A new series coming to CNBC as of April 17 – American Made.  The network has ordered 6 episodes and the show will focus on America’s most successful business leaders, their entrepreneurial spirit and insight into what drives them. The premiere episode will take a good look at Starbucks’ Chairman Howard Shultz and his climb to the top.  The show will air Mondays at 8p.

FOX debuts a new Saturday late night talker in September – Talk Show with Spike Feresten (working title) will launch on September 16, at 12m. The half-hour show will follow MADtv and include traditional talk show segments interspersed with comedy sketches. The show will also have field pieces, mock commercials and pop culture parodies, all before a live studio audience.

A couple of items from the folks at Discovery

  • Discovery Communications will now have video content on Google Earth  If you’re not familiar, Google Earth is a way-cool satellite imagery-based mapping product that depicts 3D images and terrain with mapping capabilities and Google’s search engine. (Go ahead, plug your home address into it and get the aerial view!) Discovery will initially offer information and video content, in a two-to-four-minute segment, showcasing 10 American National Parks, including Yellowstone, Mount Rushmore and Dinosaur National Park.
  • Discovery Communications will launch its first ad-supported broadband channels on April 15. Discovery Channel Beyond and Travel Channel Beyond will offer original and exclusive short-form programs as well as user-generated documentaries. Broadband channels for TLC, Animal Planet and Discovery Health Channel will launch later this year.
  • And finally, Discovery Communications had their annual upfront presentation yesterday in New York City, and a goodly chunk of that information will be included in Monday’s edition of Cynopsis.

Station group Media General will acquire four new television stations, all currently NBC owned-and-operated stations, in a deal valued at $600 million.  The stations are WNCN/Raleigh, WCMH/Columbus, WVTM/Birmingham and WJAR/Providence. The completion of the deal is subject to FCC approval and is expected to be finalized by the second half of this year. With this acquisition, Media General will also divest its CBS affiliate in Birmingham, WIAT, as well as its KWCH/Wichita station, KIMT/Mason City and WDEF/Chattanooga.

Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. will now provide content from Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and Turner Classic Movies via Verizon Wireless V CAST. Currently, 150 million Verizon customers have the V CAST service. Among the network offerings will be The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, The Powerpuff Girls and Dexter’s Laboratory, along with The Venture Bros., Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law from Adult Swim.

MTV can now stream to wireless customers its first-ever made-for-mobile concert with performances by Warner Music Group artists Sean Paul, T.I., The Veronicas and Lupe Fiasco. The performances by Sean Paul, The Veronicas and Lupe Fiasco will be available cross-carrier for a two week window on MTV channels, and the T.I. performance will be available during the same period exclusively on Sprint.

Cablevision Systems Corporation will offer INHD2, that is an InDemand Networks’ high-definition channel offering viewers HD movies, music and entertainment. Cablevision now has 20 programming services available to all iO digital cable customers at no additional charge. Some of the programming on INHD2 will include movies originally made for IMAX theatres, original series such as The Aussie Wine Trail and Caribbean Escapes and music events including Farm Aid, Norah Jones, and The Who.

* NEW PRODUCTION / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT *

David Ellender has been promoted to CEO of FreemantleMedia Enterprises and also joins the company’s Operating Board. David will manage both the FID and FreemantleMedia Licensing Worldwide divisions and will report to Tony Cohen, CEO/FreemantleMedia.

CBS marks the return of programming executive Ghen Maynard, developer of such CBS notables as Survivor and The Amazing Race.  Maynard had a stint at NBC and now returns to CBS as EVP/Alternative Programming and New Media Entertainment for the CBS Paramount Network TV Group, effective June 5.

Ramsey A. Naito is the new VP/Long-form Development for Cartoon Network. Ramsey will be responsible for searching, creating and producing long-form properties for the network. She will be based in Burbank and report to Michael Ouweleen, SVP/Development and Creative Direction.

Audrey Moskowitz has joined the HorseTV Channel as Director/National Sales and Distribution. Based in Denver, Audrey will lead the national distribution and sales negotiations for all U.S. cable operators
