Cynopsis: Kids!

09/08/08

Good morning. It’s Monday, September 8, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Wildbrain has inked an exclusive deal with animation creator/writer/director Danny Antonucci (Ed, Edd n Eddy, The Brothers Grunt).  Under the pact, Antonucci will develop kid and adult TV series, feature film and new media projects for Wildbrain.

Yep, Columbia Pictures is calling on Ghostbusters again.  A script for the third Ghostbusters movie is being written by The Office co-executive producers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, who recently co-wrote Year One, a movie comedy directed by Harold Ramis, who of course wrote/directed and starred in the first two Ghostbusters movies and animated series as well as several related videogames.  Speaking to the Chicago Tribune, Ramis said that the project will be produced by Judd Apatow and will feature the original Ghostbusters, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson and of course himself, in a “some mentor capacity.”  Ramis also noted that since Apatow has produced several pictures for Sony, the studio anticipates some of the same talent from those movies will star in the new Ghostbusters movie.

In other Sony/Columbia Pictures news … After much speculation, actor Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi are signing on to spin two new Spider-Man movies, per The Hollywood Reporter.  The fourth and fifth Spider-Man movies will be produced by Laura Ziskin with Avi Arad, they produced the first three Spidey movies.  Ziskin says the studio, which hopes to save costs by shooting the movies back-to-back, plans to release Spider-Man 4 in May 2011.  Jamie Vanderbilt is writing the screenplay.  No word yet on if Kirsten Dunst will return as Mary Jane, but … I’m thinking that’s going to be a yes.  THR also reports that Sony has accelerated development on the Spidey spin-off project Venom.

The wild rumpus is back on track for Warner Bros.  The studio has set the new release date for the Spike Jonze directed movie adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s kid’s book Where The Wild Things Are for October 16, 2009, according to ComingSoon.net.  The movie, which was originally slated for this fall, features an all-star voice-over cast including Catherine Keener, Del Toro, Forest Whitaker, Catherine O’Hara, and James Gandolfini to name a few.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Children’s BBC finds a third Blue Peter host in Joel Defries (23), as the series begins its 50th year on BBC One (Tuesdays/Wednesdays at 4:35p) and CBBC (Wednesdays/Thursdays at 8:30a) on September 23, 2008.  Defries will join current co-host Andy Akinwolere and the recently named Helen Skelton (25).  Previously Defries hosted a 3-hour live music show, C4, which aired five days week, while Skelton was a presenter for a kid’s series on ITV Border and a morning news co-host for BBC Radio Cumbria and CBBC’s Sportsround.

Winnipeg based Ameba, a kid-targeted IPTV system, will attend Mipcom/Mipcom Jr for the first time next month where it will introduce its delivery system, AmebaTV .com, and HD set top box.  Designed to give parents control over what their kids are watching, here’s how AmebaTV.com works.  Adults select titles from the AmebaTV.com website and download the content to it’s set top box, then kids can choose what they want to watch from that list.  Ameba is looking for additional content for AmebaTV.com, including both International and North American properties in any language.  AmebaTV.com is not currently available for distribution.

9 Story Entertainment heads to Mipcom where it will showcase the pilot episode of its new animated teen/adult targeted primetime comedy, Fugget About It.  The series revolves around the misadventures of a former NY mob boss and his family who find themselves living in a quiet Canadian town after entering the witness relocation program.  A co-production with Darius Films, the Fugget About It pilot was commissioned by Teletoon (Canada).

The preschool channel JimJam, a co Chellomedia and HIT Entertainment joint venture, is now available in Russia via cable and internet provider Akado and through JimJam’s recently launched Middle East feed.  Akado is offering JimJam as part of a special package of kid-targeted TV channels.  Moving forward JimJam will also be available in Russian (www.ru.jimjam.tv ).

MARKETING/LICENSING

Asylum Entertainment takes GardenParty, a new K5-11 targeted online world, into its public beta testing phase.  GardenParty encourages users (or gardeners) to ‘grow their own fun’ by taking part in various activities and interact with other kids, as well as buy seeds that they then plant and tend, and which then ‘grow’ into activities, toys, and places to explore.  Public beta testing is expected to last a month before the site gets its official launch, again including both free-to-play as well as premium content.

As part of their new partnership Kaboom! and qubo are honoring 67 US communities that have made a commitment to the importance of kids, playgrounds and playtime and increasing access to play areas, by naming them members of the 2008 Playful City USA communities.  Playful City USA is Kaboom’s national recognition program.  Together qubo and Kaboom will support the initiative with a full marketing campaign.
