Good morning. It’s Monday, September 27, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Zodiak Rights gets a commission from Denmark for 14 episodes of its kid’s format series Project Puppy.  Danish kid’s channel DR Ramasjang will debut Project Puppy, which will be produced by Zodiak’s Mastiff Media, later this year.  The original series debuted in Italy, where it is titled Missione Cuccioli, several weeks ago on DeAkids and is produced by Zodiak’s Magnolia.  Zodiak Rights was formerly the rights divisions of RDF Media Group and Zodiak Entertainment.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Moonscoop, Turner Broadcasting, Gamania and Telegael are set to begin production on a second season of their co-production the flash animated series Hero: 108, which will include 52×11 episodes.  Additionally, the first season of Hero: 108 (52×11) has been acquired by GMTV (UK), MBC (Middle East), and Televisa (Mexico).  RedGate Games, a publisher of online multi-player games in Asia and a unit of Gamania Digital Entertainment, developed and launched Hero: 108 online, a MMOG, this summer.  This fall Playmates, the worldwide master toy licensee, will launch a line of toys based on the property.  Further licensing deals have been completed with Mad Engine (apparel) and Atlantyca Entertainment (publishing).

Australia’s SLR Productions inks new broadcast deals for the preschool animated series Guess How Much I Love You  The Adventures of Little Nutbrown Hare (52×11).  Based on the popular picture book of the same name by author Sam McBratney and illustrator Anita Jeram, the series has been picked up by Playhouse Disney in Australia for first broadcast run and ABC TV (Australia).  Also acquiring Guess How Much I Love You are SVT (Sweden), YLE (Finland), in Canada by TFO (French-Canadian and the Ontario channel) and Knowledge (in British Columbia).  ABC Commercial will distribute the series on DVD in Australia.

Nickelodeon will address the issue of bullies in new Nick News with Linda Ellerbee special, Sticks, Stones and CyberSlams, premiering Sunday, October 3 at 9p.  The half-hour special features kids who have been bullied and kids have done the bullying about ways to prevent kids from bullying.

DHX Media heads to Mipcom next month with new preschool series and new episodes of several existing series.  DHX will launch the new preschool stop-motion animated series Rastamouse (52×11) in Cannes.  Rastamouse is produced by Three Stones Media with Dinamo Productions and publishers Little Roots for CBeebies (UK).  DHX Media is handling the worldwide TV (excluding the UK) rights, as well as the global licensing and merchandising rights for the property.  The TV series is based on the Rastamouse books by Michael De Souza and Genevieve Webster.  DHX will also showcase completed episodes of the new art-centric CGI animated preschool series Pirates, An Adventure in Art (44×11), which was commissioned by the CBC (Canada).  Also on its slate in the preschool arena include the third season of Grandpa in My Pocket, new episodes of Animal Mechanicals, and dirtgirlworld.  Meanwhile in the tween/teen-targeted live action genre, DHX will feature second seasons of How to Be Indie and That’s So Weird.

Foothill attends MipJunior/Mipcom next month having completed several new deals and plans to announce others.  Foothill has optioned the exclusive rights to Gunk Aliens, from author Jonny Moon, from HarperCollins Children’s Books.  Foothill will announce investment partners soon for the project, which is currently in development.  Foothill has also partnered with France-based Toon Factor for Raz & Benny for French-speaking territories.  Additionally, writer Maddy Lambur signs on as a writer for the live-action kid/tween series My Momtourage and Me.  The series is created by author/illustrator Kyla May (G2G, Miss. Behaves).

MARKETING/LICENSING

Chorion completes a raft of new promotional deals and partnerships for The World of Eric Carle in the US, UK, Germany, Australia, Asia Pacific and Japan.

  • In the US publishing partners will introduce a range of products in 2011:  Random House Children’s Books will debut a line of coloring and activity books in the fall, including Deluxe Paint Box and Doodle titles, with more titles set for 2012; Publications International will launch scrapbooks this spring, and a line of soundbooks in the fall; Nigh and Day Studios will debut My Very First App, a game app based on Carle’s My Very First Book series, for iPhone/iPad/iTouch in September.
  • In the UK, The World of Eric Carle babywear line continues to expand, including product recently launched by George@Asda.
  • Chorion has inked new deals for The World of Eric Carle in Germany with Joy Toy, as distributor of Kids Preferred toys, launching The Very Hungry Caterpillar soft toys in the market this fall.  Additionally, calendar company Heye has signed on for calendars, date books monthly planners and family planners.
  • In Australia, Target has launched a line of infant toys and plans to introduce an infant apparel line in spring 2011.  A line of junior fashion t-shirts debuted at Jay Jay’s in August.
  • Further deals across Europe feature newly appointed representatives for the brand including Marathon Media in France and Copyright Promotions Licensing Group in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxemburg.
  • In Asia, Chorion has appointed Infiniss as the new agent for The World of Eric Carle in Korea.

Nickelodeon Consumer Products (NCP) arrives for Brand Licensing Europe 2010 (BLE) this week with a wide range of new properties including the live-action series Big Time Rush and Victorious, as well as mixed 2D/3D animated math-centric preschool series Team Umizoomi, with consumer products programs slated to launch across Europe, the Middle East, Russia and Africa from 2011.  Additionally, NCP will feature a new retro style guide for the newly acquired Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which will also debut at BLE.  NCP’s will also feature existing properties including SpongeBob SquarePants, Go, Diego, Go, iCarly, Ni Hao, Kai-lan, Wonder Pets, and Dora the Explorer.  SpongeBob SquarePants will continue to be supported through the end of 2012 with the Be Happy marketing effort, including products, promotions and events, and special programming, while Dora the Explorer celebrated its 10th anniversary this summer and is supported by the worldwide Explorers Wanted campaign now through 2012.

Senario, a game and toy company, appoints The Wilko Group (TWG) as its Canadian distribution partner.  The new deal will see Jeff O’Brian, a founding member and manager of TWG’s Toronto office, head up and expand Senario’s consumer product distribution to mass retailers across Canada.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Amy Friedman, a 23-year Nickelodeon veteran, hangs out her own shingle called Redhead Consulting ( www.redheadconsulting.com ).  With her new company, Friedman aims to bring strategy and creative together to help bolster new and existing brands, channels and programming across multiple platforms.  Friedman has recently completed new deals with Nickelodeon, MTV, and Newsweek.  Most recently SVP/Original Programming and Creative Director The N (now known as TeenNick), Friedman joined Nickelodeon in 1987 and has done just about everything at the network beginning by mixing slime and moving on to work on the early branding team for Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., and Nick at Nite, as a writer, director and executive producer. Friedman was the executive producer of the Nickelodeon UK launch team, the channel’s first international channel and also launched The Big Help.  She went on to launch and helm Nickelodeon’s Creative Lab, and launch Noggin (know known as Nick Jr.) and The-N.  When you see Amy in at Mipcom please wish her well and see if you can weasel the recipe for Slime out of her.

Glenn O’Farrel is appointed as President and CEO of TFO, a Canadian French-language educational channel.  A 20-year veteran Canadian broadcast veteran, O’Farrel takes on his new position for Claudette Paquin, who stepped down from her position this summer after almost 20 years. O’Farrel was President and CEO of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters from 2002-2009.  He previously also worked for CanWest Global, Global Quebec and Pathonic Network.
