Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, September 26, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

DQ Entertainment signs on as a co-production partner with Spain’s Imira Entertainment, Enne Entertainment Studios and broadcaster RTVE (Spain) on the new 3D animated series Escape Hockey (26×26).  The co-production partners will produce two versions of the series, one a standard TV series and the other an interactive version, which will feature the Watch & Play game format.  The latter allows viewers to simultaneously watch and the series and play the mini-games integrated into scenes in each episode and play out the storyline.  Broadcasters will direct viewers to their online platforms to engage in the game.  This Watch & Play sections are being developed with VOD, online, interactive TV and games console platforms in mind.  Created by Enne Entertainment Studios, Escape Hockey ( www.escapehockey.com ) is a K6-12 aimed space adventure comedy that revolves around Dan and his friends who are abducted and taken to the planet Plutonium.  The only way the group can get home is to win the biggest sporting event in the galaxy, the Escape Hockey Tournament.  Imira is handling the worldwide sales for the new series and will showcase it at Mipcom.

Comic book publisher Archie Comics and animation studio Moonscoop are partnering to create the new animated series based on Sabrina, the Teenage Witch.  For the new series, Archie and Moonscoop are creating a new look and more modern teen feel, “reimagined in the vein of Harry Potter, Twilight and Buffy, The Vampire Slayer”.  In addition to facing the average daily teen issues, Sabrina will also come up against monsters and various witch world mayhem.  Moonscoop and Archie aim to launch the new animated Sabrina program on TV in the coming year.  Based on Archie’s popular Sabrina comic book, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch has already been the subject of the popular live-action TV series, which ran on ABC and The WB, and was then followed by a spin-off animated series that also ran on ABC.

LICENSING

DQ Entertainment signs a distribution and licensing deal with SMC Entertainment, a division of US-based Sun-Mate Corporation, for the first season of the 3D animated series The Jungle Book (52×11).  Under the agreement SMC has the TV, home video and licensing and merchandising rights for season one of The Jungle Book for an initial five-year term in North America.

MARKETING

The Cabbage Patch Kids and Apple & Eve Fruitables team for fall retail promotion that runs now through December 31, 2011.  The partnership includes a Fruitables on-pack promotion featuring a different collectible Cabbage Patch Kid on each flavor.  As part of the promotion master toy partner Jakks Pacific introducing a new line of toddler-aimed Cabbage Patch Kids, called The ABC  Play With Me Cabbage Patch Kids, which includes interactive features.  The new Play With Me Cabbage Patch Kids sing the ABC’s, giggles, babbles and slurps from their own Apple & Eve Fruitables juice boxes.  Additionally, consumers can purchase select Apple & Eve Fruitables 8-packs and then enter a special code, found inside of the packaging, online at www.cabbagepatchkids.com to download their own copy of the Cabbage Patch Kid animated video, The Screen Test.  Also, select Cabbage Patch Kids products will also include a Fruitables coupon for consumers.

Ludorum, creators of the preschool series Chuggington, partners with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the US to launch a campaign designed to help make roadways safer by offering child transportation guidance to families with kids preschool to third grade.  The national campaign, titled ‘Think Safe, Ride Safe, Be Safe!, features Chuggington’s characters to help parents teach their kids how to use the NHTSA’s pedestrian, school bus, bike and car seat safety guidelines in their daily life.  Chuggington currently airs in the US on Disney Channel’s Disney Junior programming block, which will begin running Think Safe, Ride Safe, Be Safe! public service announcements this October.  Further information about the campaign, including the traffic safety kid pledge and various safety-based kid games, can be found at www.chuggington.com/safety and www.disneyjunior.com/safety .  Additionally, parent focused resources and tips are available at www.nhtsa.gov/parents .  The partnership, which runs through 2012, will also feature seasons traffic safety messaging, school curriculum materials, social media promotions and a free downloadable Traffic Safety app will launch in the coming months.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Today marks the launch of the 42nd season of Sesame Street on PBS Kids ( www.pbskids.org/sesame , check local listings).  As always the series encourages school readiness, with the new seasons focusing on a STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) curriculum.  Season 42, how many shows can say that, will also feature original songs and street stories, including the new segment Murray’s Science Experiments, as well as new Super Grover 2.0 stories and Abby’s Flying Fair School animations.  In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15), Sesame Street will premiere a special episode, The Latinization of Marco, during which Gina teaches her adopted Guatemalan-born son about his roots.  The special episode features guest stars including South American musician Juanes, Sofia Vergara teaching the Spanish word “baile,” and Ballet Hispanico.  Other guest appearances throughout the new season include visits from an endless stream of celebrities such as Mark Ruffalo, Robin Williams, Amy Adams, Drew Brees, Nicole Kidman, Live Schreiber and Naomi Watts, Mila Kunis, Sofia Vergara, and Emma Stone, Conan O’Brien, Seth Rogan, Andy Samberg, Craig Ferguson, Bruno Mars and Carmel Anthony, Sutton Foster and Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, among many others.  Sesame Street is produced by Sesame Workshop, and is funded in part by a grant through the Public Broadcasting Service and Corporation for Public Broadcasting and public television viewers. Sesame Street is underwritten in part by Beaches Resorts, PNC, UnitedHealthcare, Earth’s Best Organic, and The Good Egg Project.

Zodiak Kids inks a further deal with Turner Broadcasting to feature the boy-targeted action series Redakai: Conquer The Kairu (52×30) on Cartoon Network across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (excluding Spain and French-speaking Europe), where the series will debut from early 2012.  A co-production between Zodiak, Marathon Media and Spin Master, Redakai: Conquer The Kairu ( www.redakai.com ) debuted this summer on Turner’s Cartoon Network US.  Zodiak Kids holds worldwide TV, home video and licensing and merchandising rights to the series, excluding North America.  Marathon Media is a part of Zodiak Kids, which in turn is a division of Zodiak Media Group.

V&S Entertainment will debut the third season of its HD CGI animated series Everything’s Rosie at Mipcom and completes a new broadcast deal for the earlier seasons.  France Television (France) has acquired seasons one and two of the preschool series (known in French as La Vie de Rosie) for its France 5 channel’s Zouzous programming block, where the series premieres later this fall.  The third season of Everything’s Rosie brings the series to a total of 78×11 episodes.  Everything’s Rosie has been acquired by 150+ broadcasters worldwide.

Ruckus Media Group and Hasbro release the new English-language interactive storybook app My Little Pony: Twilight Sparkle, Teacher for a Day for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.  Aimed at kids 3-11, the first My Little Pony storybook app focuses on friendship.  The app features story-driven activities as kids make their way through the new book.  The new My Little Pony: Twilight Sparkle, Teacher for a Day is the second Hasbro interactive storybook app created by Ruckus, the first was Chuck and Friends: Friends for the Long Haul.  Hasbro and Ruckus are currently developing further titles for release in 2012.

Disney Mobile jumps into the waters original game characters with its first original character, Swampy, a friendly alligator who is on a mission to be clean in the new physics-based game Where’s My Water, released for iOS devices. In the game, players guide water through 80 levels (four chapters of 20 levels each) with life-like physics through subterranean layers of earth, rock, and broken pipes, and making its way into Swampy’s bathtub.  Where’s My Water was developed the folks behind the game JellyCar.
