Cynopsis
09/25/06
Good morning. It’s Monday, September 25, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
In the first of many anticipated head-to-head contests of the new fall season, Grey’s Anatomy on ABC last Thursday night beat the season premiere of CSI on CBS. Grey’s pulled a dandy 10.9/26 A18-49, far out-weighing CSI’s 7.5/18. And while ABC and CBS may be banking on ER getting a little long in the tooth, the veteran series ER is still strong enough to win its premiere time period with a 6.8/18, beating freshman Six Degrees on ABC with a 5.8/15, and Shark on CBS with a 4.2/11.
Tonight’s Premieres:
CW: 7th Heaven at 8p, Runaway at 9p
TWC: Abrams & Bettes: Beyond the Forecast at 8p
NBC: Heroes at 9p
Baseball begins to wreak havoc on the Fox primetime schedule next week with three Playoff games scheduled on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The first move is to replace Happy Hour on Thursday at 830p with a second episode of ’til Death. Also, while Justice is off the schedule next Wednesday at 9p, replaced by House, it will get a second airing this week – Friday at 8p in lieu of Nanny 911. Also off the sked for next week is Standoff on Tuesday at 9p, and the Saturday night schedule is preempted.
Oprah Winfrey will launch her own radio channel, Oprah and Friends, today on XM Satellite Radio, a 24/7 Oprah fix, featuring plenty of the personalities Oprah fans have come to know on the television series including best bud Gayle King and Maya Angelou. The channel will include a variety of shows, including The Oprah and Gayle Show where they dish the latest gossip; Gayle will also have her own talk show, cleverly titled The Gayle King Show. Gayle’s first guest will be .. you guessed it, Oprah accompanied by Steadman.
Program Partners will distributed DeGrassi: The Next Generation to the US market for M-F airings starting in Fall 2007. The off-net teen series is popular on the N, where it’s sixth season is set to launch this Friday. According to Broadcasting & Cable, the syndication deal will begin with 119 episodes, and freshen with an additional 19-24 episodes each year, as long as the series continues in production. The terms are for 2 years, is a cash + barter deal with 2 minutes of national barter per episode (M-Th, Friday episode is barter-free).
A merger among two major reality TV production companies is afoot — Dutch-based Eyeworks will buy a 50% stake in 3 Ball Prods, production partners for NBC’s series The Biggest Loser along with Reveille and 24/7 Prods., as well as producers of other reality series including Breaking Bonaduce for VH1 and Unanimous on Fox. 3 Ball Prods will, a a result, have a major equity stake in Eyeworks as well. The plus for 3 Ball will be a new ability to introduce the company to international markets, with the help from Eyeworks who is a large international outfit, second only to Endemol. And the deal gives Eyeworks an introduction to the US market.
Cable network G4 has picked up the shared cable rights to Fox’s veteran series Cops, distributed by Twentieth Television. G4 will share Cops with Court TV, tho we’re talking about different episodes. G4 has picked up 160 episodes of Cops, which it will air 6x a day beginning in either December or January, including two daily episodes in primetime. According to Variety, G4 has signed a three year deal, at $100k per episode. G4 has beefed up its programming of syndicated series of late, with the acquisitions of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and off-net rights to The Man Show and Arrested Development.
Cynopsis Readers’ Choice for this Season’s Breakout Hit and First to Fall: Your choice for Breakout Hit for the 2006-07 season was a slam dunk with 31% of you choosing NBC’s new series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, with just one vote dissenting. Ranking second in your Breakout Hit category was ABC’s Ugly Betty with 13% of your votes. As for the First to Fall, 19% of you chose Fox’s sitcom Happy Hour, a show that only received 1 vote of confidence. The second ranking show in the First to Fall list was ABC’s Knights of Prosperity with 8% of the vote, and not even one vote for its success.

You know Dick Wolf can do drama, but can he do comedy? NBC hopes so. The network is looking at two projects from Dick Wolf Prods, both comedies – one about a less than worthy politician who needs all the staffers around him he can get; and the other revolves around a couple of EMTs.
