NBC has ordered up another season of The Biggest Loser and will schedule it for some time midseason. NBC ordered an additional 14 episodes and in this rendition, the contestants will be in pairs, teamed up with a family member or significant other.  The Biggest Loser is from 3Ball Prods and Reveille.

My Name is Earl is scheduled for off-net syndication in the fall of 2009, distributed by Twentieth TV.  With that said, TBS has picked up the so-called pre-syndication window which begins a full 18 months ahead of station syndication, set to debut on April 1, 2008. This is becoming a habit with TBS, according to Variety.  The Office launched on 9/11, and Tyler Perry’s House of Payne launched early last summer; both shows go into standard syndication in 2008.  As far as Earl is concerned, TBS will have two primetime airings starting in the spring, and then in the fall of 2009 when the show becomes available to local stations, the airings on TBS will move to daytime.

VH1 has plans to launch a new reality series Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew on January 10, 2008. The eight-episode series will follow the real experiences of nine celebrity patients in an Los Angeles-area treatment center under the care of Dr. Drew and his team of counselors, nurses and addiction experts. After the initial 21-day program is completed, the celebrities will have the option to continue treatment in a sober living environment for up to three more months at the expense of the network. Dr. Drew is the host of the syndicated radio show Loveline that is also on MTV. VH1’s new show is produced by Irwin Entertainment.

On October 1, BBC America will premiere its nightly newscast BBC World News America at 7p, anchored from BBC’s Washington, D.C. bureau by Matt Frei. The broadcast will feature in-depth daily reports on international and U.S. news topics. Katty Kay will be the Washington Correspondent covering U.S. news and politics including Campaign 2008. Additionally on October 1, BBC America will offer a second daily newscast World News Today at 10p that features live updates on late-breaking U.S. and international stories presented by Philippa Thomas. Matt Frei also will provide in-depth interviews and discussions along with other BBC correspondents.

The hi-def Smithsonian Channel launches on Wednesday on DirecTV as part of the satellite service’s HD Xtra Pack, reaching approximately 16 million subscribers.  Content will include 75 hours of original programming with an eye to increasing that number to 100 by year’s end. The Smithsonian Channel is a co-venture with Showtime and the Smithsonian.

Character-actress Alice Ghostley, known best for her television roles as Esmeralda on Bewitched and Bernice on Designing Women died Friday. She was 81. Alice’s career began on Broadway in Leonard Sillman’s New Faces of 1952 and she received critical acclaim for singing “The Boston Beguine” which became her signature song. Later in the 1960s she won a Tony award for best featured actress in The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window.  She appeared on numerous primetime series in guest role, and was a regular on Bewitched from 1969 to 1972 as Esmeralda; and from 1987 to 1993 she was Bernice Clifton on Designing Women which earned her an Emmy nomination in 1992. She also appeared in several memorable films such as To Kill a Mockingbird, The Graduate and Grease.

Retro Television Network (RTN), owned and distributed by Equity Media Holdings Corporation has an affiliation agreement with The E.W. Scripps Company to launch a new affiliate in Detroit early next year. The new affiliate will exist on a digital stream of WXYZ-TV, the ABC affiliate that reaches more than 1.9 million households in the Detroit market.
