Cynopsis: Kids!

09/22/08

Good morning. It’s Monday, September 22, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

NYC-based Little Airplane Productions grows again with the launch of Little Airplane Films, a new division that will create/produce family-friendly movies (animated and live-action) for theatrical release.  Little Airplane’s head of production, Tom Brown, will helm little Airplane Films.  Known as creator/producer of preschool-targeted productions including The Wonder Pets, Go, Baby!, Oobi!, 3rds & Bird, earlier this year Little Airplane opened a studio in London.

The deal has been completed between DreamWorks and India-based media company Reliance ADA Group to establish a new movie studio, according to the Wall Street Journal.  The new deal will see DreamWorks separate from its pact with Paramount. The new studio will be helmed by DreamWorks co-founder Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks CEO Stacey Snider, while another founding DreamWorks partner David Geffen won’t be part of the new studio.  According to the report, Reliance will pour $500 million in equity and cover an additional $700 million in debt via J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.  The studio plans to produce upwards of six movies a year.  What will happen with the various projects in the works under the DreamWorks and Paramount deal has yet to be determined, though the WSJ believes that the projects will remain at Paramount with Spielberg being compensated for his role in them.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Looks like Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson’s three-movie 3D animated adaptation of Tintin is not going to happen, at least not at Universal Studios, which reportedly backed out of financing the project when the budget ca-chinged in at $130 million, per the Los Angeles Times.

Sony Pictures Animation and Columbia Pictures’ 3D animated feature film Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs gets a voice cast including Bill Hader, Anna Faris, James Caan, Andy Samberg, Bruce Campbell, Mr. T, and Tracy Morgan.  The movie is set for release on January 15, 2010.  Written and directed by Chris Miller and Phil Lord, with am Marsden producing, the movie is based on the kid’s book Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (Simon & Schuster/Aladdin) written by Judi Barrett and illustrated by Ron Barrett.

Stephen Chow, Asia’s popular actor/director/writer/producer, will both direct and star in Columbia Picture’s live-action feature film The Green Hornet, which is scheduled for release June 25, 2010.  In his US directing debut, Chow will take on the role of The Green Hornet’s valet/sidekick Kato, a role played on TV by his childhood hero Bruce Lee in the 1960s.  The movie adaptation of The Green Hornet will also star Seth Rogen and features a screenplay by Rogen and Even Goldberg, who will also serve as executive producers.  Neal H. Moritz is producing the movie under his Original Film production banner.  Chow early work in Hong Kong included hosting the kid’s TV series 430 Space Shuttle.

In other casting news, Freddie Highmore, Bill Nighy, Miranda Richardson and Sienna Miller have singed on to lend their voices to characters in the animated feature film, A Fox’s Tale, per Variety.  Directing the movie is George Gat, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Peter Doka.  Additionally, Gat is producing for Dyn Entertainment along with Bill Chamberlain for Parallel Pictures.

MORE KIDS STUFF

AOL Radio launches three new themed radio stations including Kidz Stuff!, a channel specifically for younger kids.  Kidz Stuff features music from Sesame Street, Kidz Bob, Laurie Berkner Band, The Wiggles, Ralph’s World and Disney.  AOL Radio’s existing kid-centric programming includes Lullabies and the tween-targeted Kids Pop.  The other two new stations are Halloween, featuring horror movie soundtracks, and Oktoberfest, which will offer traditional German folk music and polka.

Today marks Channel One News launch of OneVote 2008, the network’s fourth teen-targeted student mock-election for the next President of the United States.  Kids can take part in the mock OneVote 2008 election at http://onevote.com from October 20 through October 24, with the results to be announced on October 29.  The network has tapped seven teens to serve as its political commentators, each of which will file reports via Channel One News’ new user generated video platform, You Tell It, and will also air during the network’s in-class news program through November.  The commentators will also offer regular blog entries about their experiences.  Additionally, Channel One News will offer results of its exit polls, and teens can also post a OneVote widget application to their social networking profiles to remind them to vote.  Alloy Media + Marketing’s Channel One News is in the second year of a partnership with NBC News’ Peacock Productions.  In an effort to reach teens, the OneVote initiative is supported by Alloy’s in-school media network and online platform as well as in its publication Careers and Colleges.
