Good morning. It’s Monday, September 19, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
While he doesn’t look it, Classic Media‘s Postman Pat turns 30 this month and in doing so becomes the longest-running animated kid’s series on the BBC. In addition to a new Postman Pat BBC series, Classic Media has also unveiled it is working with RGH Entertainment, the animation development/production unit of Rubicon Group Holding (RGH), on a CG 3D Stereoscopic Postman Pat feature film, Postman Pat: The Movie – You Know You’re The One, for release in 2013. Leading the voice cast for the first ever Postman Pat movie is Stephen Mangan (Episodes, Green Wing, Dirk Gently) as Postman Pat, who will be joined by Jim Broadbent (Iris, Moulin Rouge!), Rupert Grint (Harry Potter) and David Tennant (Doctor Who, Harry Potter). Set to being production this month, the movie is being directed by Mike Disa (Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil) from a screenplay co-written by Kim Fuller (Spice World, High Heels & Low Lifes) and Annika Bluhm, the long-time Producer of the Postman Pat TV series. Ralph Kamp’s Timeless Films is managing worldwide sales with Icon Film Distribution releasing the film in the UK and Ireland. Producing the movie are RGH’s Robert Anich and Miles Horst and Classic Media’s Ceri Barnes and Annika Bluhm, with Rubicon’s Randa Ayoubi and David Corbett and Classic Media’s Eric Ellenbogen and Doug Schwalbe serving as executive producers.
The Pokemon Company International teams with digital theatrical distributor Cinedigm to release the new Pokemon movie, Pokemon the Movie: White–Victini and Zekrom ( www.pokemon.com/moviewhite), this holiday season for one weekend – December 3 and 4, 2011. For that weekend Pokemon the Movie: WhiteVictini and Zekrom will be seen in 300+ digital theaters nationwide. Pokemon the Movie: WhiteVictini and Zekrom is one of two feature-length movies debuting in December. Details on the second of the two pictures, Pokemon the Movie: BlackVictini and Reshiram, will be announced soon.
BBC Worldwide awards the UK master toy and gift license for Ragdoll Production‘s new preschool series The Adventures of Abney & Teal to Rainbow Designs. The Adventures of Abney & Teal will premiere September 26 on CBeebies (UK), where the series will air Monday-Friday at 5:45p. Rainbow Designs will launch a new line, including art & craft products, role-play toys, traditional toys, soft toys, puzzles and games in fall 2012. Created by artist/author/musician Joel Stewart, The Adventures of Abney & Teal features hand-drawn and painted elements and revolves around friends Abney and Teal who live on an island with other characters, in a lake, in the middle of a park that is in the center of a big city.
Allied Integrated Marketing inks a number of national food and beverage promotional partnerships for Mattel Games. New nationwide partners include: Arby’s in the US; Stouffer’s, a Nestle brand; Tyson Foods; Post Alpha-Bits; MaMa Rosa’s (refrigerated pizzas); Langers (juices); and Pik-Nik Shoestring Potatoes. The new promotional programs include a combination of mass media, on-pack, retail, print, radio and social media presence for Mattel Games. New regional partners include Edible Arrangements and Tasti D-Lite. Allied Integrated Marketing was appointed as the Agency of Record for Mattel Games about a year ago. Mattel’s games portfolio includes classic brands such as UNO, Magic 8 Ball, Rock’Em Sock’Em Robots, Whac-A-Mole and Othello, as well as newer brands including Apples to Apples, Mad Gab, Imaginiff and Loopz.
Fisher-Price, the infant/preschool toy manufacturer and subsidiary of Mattel, and Sherwin-Williams team to develop the new online tool Room to Bloom ( www.fisher-price.com/roomtobloom ), a new feature on its re-designed Fisher-Price Baby Gear site, to help parents design a nursery. Room to Bloom allows consumers to select from eight different collections and from there pick wall patterns, paint colors, floor options and then they can save and share them.
Warner Bros. Consumer Products and Warner Bros. Television Group (WBTVG) and apparel company Romeo & Juliet Couture launch the new Gossip Girl-inspired apparel collection. A contemporary fashion line, Gossip Girl by Romeo & Juliet Couture, which features items priced from $80-$200, will debut at high-end retailers this month, beginning with Kitson, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue, in conjunction with season five of Gossip Girl, which premieres Monday, September 26 at 8p on The CW. Based on the young-adult novels by Cecily von Ziegesar, the Gossip Girl TV series was developed by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, who serve as executive producers with Leslie Morgenstein, Bob Levy and Joshua Safran. The series is from Fake Empire, Alloy Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios. The line is not for younger girls.
The third season of the animated comedy Regular Show debuts tonight on Cartoon Network at 8:15p. The new season also includes a Halloween special (1×22), comprised of three creep short stories. Regular Show is created by J.G. Quintel and produced by Cartoon Network Studios.
Zendaya (Shake It Up) and Australian music star Cody Simpson will be featured in a new episode of PrankStars, which will air Friday, September 23 at 8p on Disney Channel. The hidden camera prank series is hosted by Mitchel Musso (Pair of Kings, Phineas and Ferb).
Season four of The Next Star comes to a close on YTV (Canada) with a special 90-minute finale from Canada’s Wonderland on Sunday, September 25 at 7p. From Corus Entertainment’s YTV, Tricon Films & Television and Warner Music Canada, the finale features the top six kid/tween finalists performing their new original offerings (including individual and a group performance), as well as performances by special guests Allstar Weekend, Kay and newly signed Warner Music artist Victoria Duffield (a finalist from season 3 of The Next Star). YTV will feature all of the fourth season episodes of The Next Star Saturday, September 24 2p-6p, and leading up to the finale on September 25, 12p-7p. Viewers can vote for their favorite contestant via text message of YTV.com ( www.ytv.com ) until September 25 at 7p. Additionally, The Next Star Season 4 compilation album features these original songs, as well as Season 3 winner Diego Gomes’ second single, Tonight We’re On Fire, and will be available in music stores and on iTunes from September 20.
BabyTV, Fox International’s 24/7 baby and toddler network, furthers its distribution this month in Spanish-speaking markets with its launch on Digital+ (Spain), Cablemas (Mexico) and earlier this year via Dish Latino (US).
- In Spain, Digital+, a direct-to-home (DTH) satellite service, has begun offering BabyTV in localized Castilian Spanish, and will also be available on Digital+’s mobile, broadband and VOD platforms. Also in Spain earlier this summer, Telefonica’s Imagenio platform shifted BabyTV channel from tier to Basic carriage.
- Cable operator Cablemas (Mexico) launches BabyTV this month in ten different regions. BabyTV currently airs in Mexico on Mexico City’s cable platform Cablevision, as well as on both of Mexico’s DTH platforms, SKY and Dish.
- In the US and in Puerto Rico, Dish Network introduced BabyTV earlier this year when it launched the channel on the basic Spanish-language tier Latino Clasico. BabyTV is distributed in the US Hispanic Market by Fox Global Networks along with FOX Deportes, Nat Geo Mundo and Utilisima.
BRB Internacional will introduce its new animated series Khuda-Yana (26×30) at MipJunior and Mipcom in October. The series revolves around Khuda, a young street thief who finds himself set to become the next king of Kosala. Khuda mistakenly stales the Mystic Tulip thus releasing a special genie, who must help craft the boy into a respectable leader. Co-produced by Screen 21 and TVE (Spain), in collaboration with ICAA and ICIC, Khuda-Yana is slated to premiere in 2012.
Brazilian animation company TV PinGuim will feature three new kids properties at MipJunior next month, including a second season of the preschool series Fishtronaut.
- Earth To Luna! (52×11) – Currently in pre-production this new preschool aimed, science-centric series follows Luna, a 5-year-old girl who loves everything about science. Luna and her pet ferret Clyde explore and ask questions about everything they see and do. Earth To Luna features a show bible created with the help of Josh Selig and Melinda Richards. Laura G. Brown PhD served as an Educational Consultant on the series. Earth To Luna has already been pre-sold to Discovery Kids Latin America and TV Brazil.
- Gemini 8 (52×11) – targeted to K6-10, this animated action/comedy/adventure/sci-fi series that is set on the planet Gemini8 and features a young alien named Polo who creates a portal that transports Marco, a human boy, to his world. Together Polo and Marco now must help figure out a way for Marco to go home. While the TV series is in development, a series of webisodes are currently in production. Additionally, Latin American publisher Abril is publishing a series of Gemini 8 comic books.
- Fishtronaut – a second season (52×11) of this environmentally friendly preschool animated series is currently in production. The first season of Fishtronaut can be seen in 70 countries. A 3D movie, which will be distributed by Sony Pictures, is also in production for release at the end of 2012. Additionally, TV PinGuim is producing five e-books, the first of which will be available in iTunes as the end of this month, as well as a new multiplayer online Fishtronaut game.
Saban Brands names Marvista Entertainment to represent the international distribution rights for three live-action kids TV series, Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation (26×30), Beetleborgs (88×30) and VR Troopers (92×30). Marvista will feature all three series at Mipcom. Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation is the only live-action Ninja Turtles TV series ever produced. A new Ninja Turtles CGI animated series and feature film will debut in 2012.

Leigh Anne Brodsky, President/Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products has left the company, per Kidscreen. The departure comes as Nickelodeon realigns its consumer products group, which will now see the group now housed under the ad sales, marketing and digital groups and not as its separate line of business. According to the report there are no plans to replace Brodsky. Credited with building Nickelodeon’s consumer products and licensing operation as a worldwide business, Brodsky has been with Nickelodeon since 1999. Prior to serving as President, Brodsky was EVP/Nickelodeon Consumer Products. Before coming to Nickelodeon, Brodsky was SVP/Marketing, Golden Books Entertainment Group, and prior to that she was SVP/Marketing and Merchandising, Broadway Video. She began her career at United Media.
