Good morning. It’s Monday, September 17, 2012, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Australia-based SLR Productions names South Australia’s Kojo as an investor and post-production partner on its new live-action comedy/adventure series Sam Fox: Extreme Adventures (26×24). Targeted to kids/tweens 8-12, the series set to begin production in 2013 at the new film studios at the South Australian Film Corporation. Sam Fox: Extreme Adventures is also funded in part by Network Ten (Australia), which will premiere the series, ZDF Enterprises, which will distribute the series internationally, as well as Screen Australia and the South Australian Film Corporation. Based on the action adventure books by Justin D’Ath, Sam Fox: Extreme Adventures revolves around a teen ‘danger magnet’ Sam Fox as he braves the world’s wilds (open ocean to jungle), while going face to face with killer sharks, man eating leopards, tornadoes, volcanoes, giant anacondas to name a few things.
The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences handed out the 2011-2012 Creative Arts Primetime Emmy® Awards for programs and individual achievements at the 64th Emmy® Awards presentation at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles over the weekend. During the ceremony, the Governors Awards was presented to the “It Gets Better Project,” an organization that supports LGBT young people via its website, initiatives and the original videos offering messages of understanding and encouragement for appositive future. The award was accepted by its co-founders, Dan Savage and Terry Miller. An edited version of the event will air as a special on Saturday, September 22, at 8p on ReelzChannel. NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
New Line acquires the feature film rights to Maggie Stiefvater‘s young adult (YA) book The Raven Boys, the first title in the four-book Raven Cycle, per THR. Akiva Goldsman will produce the movie adaptation under his Weed Road production company as part of a new partnership with Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell and their Safehouse Pictures. The Raven Boys releases tomorrow, September 18, 2012 and is published by Scholastic Press. No writer for The Raven Boys movie has been announced as of yet. A celebrated YA author, Stiefvater’s other titles include the Books of Faerie series (Lament: The Faerie Queen’s Deception, Ballad: A Gathering of Faerie and Requiem the latter releasing in 2013), The Wolves of Mercy Falls books (Shiver, Linger and Forever), The Scorpio Races, among others. Feature films based on Shiver and The Scorpio Races are also in the works.

LICENSING
Hoho Rights, the commercial arm of Hoho Entertainment, appoints Madrid-based Elastic Rights to handle TV distribution and licensing rights for its CG animated preschool series Cloudbabies (52×10) in Portugal, Greece and Turkey. Created by noted art director Bridget Appleby (Fifi and the Flowertots, Noddy, Enjie Benjie), the series currently airs on Cbeebies (UK). Cloudbabies is animated by Studio Liddell. Licensees that have already signed on for the property in the UK include master toy partner Vivid and for publishing, Penguin Children’s Books.
Disney Publishing launches its new app, Dumbo: Disney Classics (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dumbo-disney-classics/id555074093?mt=8). The debut also marks the Disney Classics iOS app sale – offering titles for $1.99 now through September 26 including Disney Classic Peter Pan, The Jungle Book, The Aristocats and Bambi apps. The preschool-targeted apps feature illustrations, music and games.
The popular gaming app, Cut the Rope is branching out into additional consumer electronics. Parent company, Sakar International, has joined with ZeptoLab and Studio Licensing and Established Brands to produce ear buds/headphones, portable device cases, flashlights, cameras, flash drives and alarm clocks all available in the US, Canada and Mexico in summer 2013.
Discovery Communications will expand its popular Animal Planet Baby line with H.I.S. Juveniles to include new bath items and strap covers. A portion of the sales will benefit R.O.A.R. (Reach Out. Act. Respond) APL’s national campaign for animals. The new products will debut at A.B.C. Expo in October 2012.
Lionsgate and Hit Entertainment announce the release of DVD sets featuring two of Hit’s popular series: Thomas the Tank Engine and Bob the Builder. Thomas the Tank Engine episodes will be featured in a new collectable 4-disc DVD pack: Thomas and Friends: Let’s Explore With Thomas, releasing November 6, 2012. Included is a map of Sodor to track travels with and the DVD’s will feature bonus content such as games, photos, read-alongs and games. Bob the Builder: Teamwork Time will release on December 4, 2012 on DVD, digital download and on demand. The five episodes will also feature bonus content.
The great English actor Brian Blessed joins the cast of CBBC‘s (UK) new action adventure series Wizards Vs Aliens as the voice of the Nekross King. Russell T. Davies and Phil Ford (The Sarah Jane Adventures, Doctor Who), Wizards Vs Aliens will premiere on CBBC this fall 2012. The series revolves around a 16-year-old boy and his efforts to stop The Nekross, a race of aliens who feed on magic as they travel through the universe draining each planet – now they are orbiting earth. Wizards Vs Aliens is produced by BBC Cymru Wales in association with FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) and was filmed at BBC’s Roath Lock Studios in Cardiff. The series is executive produced by Davies, Bethan Jones and Sue Nott for the BBC and Bob Higgins and Sander Schwartz for FME.
The hour-long DC Nation, a collaboration between Cartoon Network, Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment, on Cartoon Network will debut new episodes of Green Lantern: The Animated Series and Young Justice: Invasion, DC animated shorts and exclusive behind-the-scenes look at feature films and the DC Universe, this fall from Saturday, September 29 at 10a. New animated shorts airing as part of DC Nation this fall include JL Animals, a humorist twist featuring animal versions of the Justice League battle trouble on the farm, and Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld, which follows the adventures of Amy Winston, a nerdy introvert who goes up against evildoers as Amethyst, the powerful princess and protector of Gem World.
Radio Disney and Disney Channel will debut the fifth season of Radio Disney’s N.B.T. (Next Big Thing) music competition will premiere Friday, October 12 at 8p, during Disney Channel’s premiere of its new original movie Girl Vs. Monster and throughout the day on Radio Disney. The competition features tweens/teens 12-17 performing their own singles, and this year a cover song. In advance of the season premiere, Radio Disney will debut each artist’s first N.B.T. single on Monday, September 17, and singles will be available on iTunes from Tuesday, September 25. Also new this season listeners and viewers will get a preview of each artist and their back story. Throughout the season, viewers will get a behind-the-scenes look as contestants work with their mentors. N.B.T. season five voting will begin on Friday, October 26 (7p). This season fans will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite artist via various outlets, with the addition of Twitter voting, and an expanded 10 votes per day per platform, which also include RadioDisney.com, Radio Disney’s Facebook page, and via texting.
BabyTV, the 24-hour commercial free channel, launches this month in Dutch on Telenet cable in Belgium via the Telenet Kids and Music package (channel 611 for Flanders and 699 for Brussels). BabyTV offers short-form programming for a parent/kid interaction and created by educational experts. In addition to Telenet, BabyTV is available in Belgium on Belgacom, for a total reach in Belgium to 2.4+ million households.
