Cynopsis: DIGITAL


Good Morning, it’s Monday, September 17, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing. 

Hackers infiltrated Santa Monica-based anti-piracy firm MediaDefender over the weekend in an effort to embarrass the entertainment industry’s efforts to battle piracy, reports The Wall Street Journal. Hackers sent bogus emails appearing to have originated from the security services firm that purported to reveal the company’s techniques. For instance, one alleged the company was developing a website MiiVii that would masquerade as a file sharing site, but that would secretly track users’ activity. MediaDefender employs proactive techniques such as spoofing (uploading fake files to deter pirates) to combat copyright infringement.


Social Project
, a start-up led my MTV Networks, is getting ready to launch – a “disaggregated” open platform helping bloggers, artists and other content creators to reach fans across multiple sites. The idea is to allow users to create their own social media tools they can take with them when visiting Flux network member sites, such as Viacom microsite Comedy Central’s  The Flux concept grew out of the more centralized social network TagWorld, which MTV Networks made a minority investment in late last year.
MySpace launched a new web series with Seventeen Magazine it hopes will attract more collegiate users. The companies are teaming up to produce Freshman 15, a web-based reality show following 15 girls as they start their college careers. Each girl will avidly update their MySpace profiles with party videos and gossipy blog entries, with Seventeen providing print coverage of their ordeals.
MTV has agreed to air Yahoo Music’s online music performance series Nissan Live Sets on its HD channel MHD, according to the New York Post. The Yahoo/Nissan production features eight-song sets from big name stars including Christina Aguilera and Melissa Ethridge, taped live in front of a small studio audience.
Pay-as-you-go kids mobile phone service kajeet will be the exclusive mobile content partner for Nickelodeon this season. Kajeet is providing downloadable ringtones, wallpapers, games, voting and other extensions to an array of Nickelodeon shows including iCarly, Just Jordan, Zoey 101 and Unfabulous.
The NBA signed a deal with KongZhong Corp. in Beijing to launch an officially licensed Chinese mobile NBA site. Users can watch select NBA games in their entirety, purchase ringtones and wallpapers as well as view highlight clips, news, scores and team blogs.

The Screen Actors Guild extended SAG benefits to actors on the new online series Quaterlife, the web’s latest high profile project from producers Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick set to debut November 11 on The move is indicative of the guild’s commitment to add new media productions to its sphere of influence, insuring its members get SAG pay rates and benefits when working on digital productions.
Brightcove will cease developing its video portal, according to Adweek, choosing instead to focus on building up its other online video services. user generated video content can now be seen on
Vancouver, B.C.-based Destiny Media Technologies launched My Play MPE, an indie-focused online music distribution service that allows small labels to post songs for airplay consideration on radio stations. The company’s mainstream market Play MPE system catalogs more than 55,000 songs for digital distribution.
P2P television service Babelgum began accepting submissions for its first online film festival, promising a cash prize of £20,000 for each category. The start-up also added a seventh category to competition – a Music Video Award.


More and more individual artists are taking the initiative themselves to protect their work online. This time Prince is suing YouTube, eBay and Pirate Bay over copyright infringement. Gearing up to file suits in both the U.S. and the UK, the artist once again known as Prince has hired consultancy Web Sheriff to patrol sites and to issue take-down notices to aid in the suits, according to CNET.
Yahoo acquired Chicago-based news aggregator and blog tracking site Buzz Tracker, a company which also provides white-label aggregation software to sites such as Alan Warms, CEO of Buzz Tracker’s parent company Participate Media, will join Yahoo as GM and VP of Yahoo News.


Handheld Entertainment launched ZVUE Networks, an online video ad network offering advertisers pre- and post-roll ads, in-stream flash overlays, banner ads and other rich media options. After closing on its planned acquisition of eBaum’s World, ZVUE will rank as one of the top online video networks.


Microsoft is testing a new research service called Gatineau to offer targeted analysis to web advertisers, in direct competition with Google Analytics. The software will integrate with Windows Live and offer demographic segmentation, marketing campaign analysis tools and behavioral data features. Click here for a beta invite request. 


ValueClick upped John Pitstick to the role of CFO, effective immediately. John replaces Scott H. Ray, who is leaving the company to pursue other interests, and will report to ValueClick CEO Tom Vadnais.
Farmers’ Almanac TV holding company Buy the Farm LLC tapped TV veteran Michael Fletcher as COO. The former co-founder of Firestone Communications and COO of World Digital Media Group will report to Bill Chisholm, CEO.

appointed former Dreamworks SKG Head of Corporate Employee Relations Sharon Reese to VP/Human Resources, to be based in the company’s LA headquarters.


As a way to inspire advances in low-cost space travel, Google is sponsoring a contest offering $30 million in prize money to a company that can land a robot camera on the moon in order to capture high-res images and other data. Space techies have until Dec. 31, 2012 to claim the big bucks, after which a reduced $12 million prize will be offered. For further inspiration check out Google Moon, chock full of images, maps and charts of the moon from NASA’s Clementine Mission.
