Good morning. It’s Monday, September 12, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Alcon Entertainment (Dolphin Tale) and Arc Productions (f/k/a Starz Animation) are teaming up to develop Arc’s animated short Ormie as a feature film. Co-produced by Arc, Ormie was created/directed by Arc’s Rob Silvestri. The original non-verbal animated short revolves around a pig named Ormie who is determined to do anything he can to reach and devour the cookies that sit beyond his reach high atop the refrigerator. Arc animated the movie Gnomeo and Juliet and also created the visual effects for Starz’s TV series Camelot and Alcon’s current feature film release Dolphin Tale. Earlier this year it was announced that Silvestri would direct the CG animated feature film OZ3D, a modern day adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s classic book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which is being produced by Arc, Multiple Media Entertainment and Gigapix Studios.

The deal will see the New York Film Festival presenting a 25th anniversary screening of Castle in the Sky and the 10th anniversary screenings of Spirited Away. A Studio Ghibli retrospective is set to tour the US and Canada, beginning with a four week engagement at New York’s IFC Center (December 16-January 12). Additionally, GKIDS is planning a limited release of select Studio Ghibli titles, many previously never released theatrically in the US, beginning late 2012. Animated films featured under the deal includes, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984), Castle in the Sky (1986), My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989), Only Yesterday (1991), Porco Rosso (1992), The Ocean Waves (1993), Pom Poko (1994), Whisper of the Heart (1995), Princess Mononoke (1997), My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999), Spirited Away (2001), and The Cat Returns (2002).
