Cynopsis: Kids!
09/11/06
Good morning. It’s Monday, September 11, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Buena Vista’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest has broken through the $1 billion worldwide box office marker on Friday, in just nine weeks a record in and of itself. As of yesterday, Pirates now sits at $1.004 billion ($414.6 million/domestic, $587.5 million/foreign) in worldwide receipts and is also now the biggest money maker of the year. Pirates is the third movie ever to do so behind Paramount’s Titanic ($1.8 billion/1997) and New Line’s Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King ($1.1 billion/2003), the latter which reached $1 billion in 10 weeks time. Dead Man’s Chest box office numbers will keep growing as the movie continues to roll-out around the world, including Italy where the movie is to be released this Wednesday, September 13, 2006.
In contrast this past weekend, the first weekend of the fall, was a very quiet one at the box office. Sony’s Screen Gems picture The Covenant debuted with the lowest opening box office weekends with just $9.0 million, since Paramount’s Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star, staring David Spade, bowed at number 1 with just $6.6 million, on this same weekend in September, 2003.
Amazon.com launched Amazon Unbox, its digital video download service, which will offer movies, TV shows and other content from 30+ various studio/network partners. To that end, TBS, Inc. has begun offering episodes of Cartoon Network and Adult Swim original series and DVD titles on Amazon Unbox. The new content features: Cartoon Network’s Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, Johnny Bravo, The PowerPuff Girls and Codename: Kids Next Door; and Adult Swim’s Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Sealab 2021. Other initial Unbox TV network content partners offering kid/youth and/or family related programming include Animal Planet, Comedy Central, Discovery Channel, Discovery Kids, MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick at Nite, The N and PBS. On the movie studio side partners include Fox, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Universal, Warner Bros., Lionsgate and MGM. The debut of Amazon Unbox also includes its Unbox RemoteLoad Technology that allows consumers to purchase content from one PC and download to another.
Warner Music Group Corporation’s (WEA Corp) US sales and retail distribution company has sealed a deal with Miami-based Union Records. Under the agreement WEA Corp will market and distribute select music titles from Union Records’ artists, including Latin stars Juan Fernando Velasco and Danilo Parra, among others. A division of Union Music Group, Union Records is a Latin music centric label including a range of genres such as regional Mexican, rock, pop, tropical and reggaeton.
Itochu Corporation has become an investor in Comic Book Movies, LLC, (CBM), the recently launched entertainment company founded by movie producer Michael Uslan and M. Jonathan Roberts. Under the pact Itochu now holds a 10% share of CBM and becomes CBM’s merchandise partner in Japan. Itochu has licensing and promotional relationships with 100+ companies for entertainment content. Earlier this year Ishimori Entertainment Inc., Comic Book Movies, LLC, Itochu Corp., and Lotus Inc., CBM’s exclusive agent in Japan, inked a deal to jointly develop movies based on the original properties of the late Shotaro Ishinomori, one of the most famous Manga authors. According to Uslan, CBM will unveil its beginning slate of movies and DVD original franchises over the next few months.
Peace Arch Entertainment Group Inc. has signed a multi-picture deal with Movie Central, Corus Entertainment’s Western Canadian pay TV service. Under the agreement, over the next three years Movie Central will pre-license 24 new titles from Peace Arch, including movies-of-the-week and feature-length titles. In addition to the 24-titles, Movie Central has pre-licensed the ManEater feature films, which is comprised of six movies that are being co-produced by Peace Arch Entertainment and RHI Entertainment Distribution LLC.
