Cynopsis: Kids!

10/06/08

Good morning. It’s Monday, October 6, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Some details of the completed separation of Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks were issued yesterday afternoon.  As previously stated, David Geffen, a co-founder of DreamWorks who oversaw the transition for DreamWorks, will not be part of the new company.  Under the separation deal Steven Spielberg and Stacey Snider‘s new Reliance Big Entertainment backed movie company will take the lead on a number of development projects, which Paramount will have the option to co-finance and co-distribute.  All other projects that are currently in development will remain at Paramount, with the new studio having the opportunity to co-finance several projects to which Spielberg is attached.  Specific titles included under these first two points were not announced, which include kid/family titles, but are likely to be soon.  Additionally, Spielberg will continue to produce the Transformers franchise for Paramount as well as collaborating on three other Paramount movies including, When Worlds Collide.  A majority of the current DreamWorks staff is expected to be offered positions at the new Spielberg/Snider/Reliance company.

Walden Media and Fox Filmed Entertainment is undergoing a restructuring that will streamline their joint venture Fox Walden in an effort to make better use of Fox film marketing resources.  While the reconfigured Fox Walden will continue to exist, it will be housed within Fox and not as a standalone entity.  Walden and Fox, which are working together on movies including Tooth Fairy and Ramona, will continue to each develop kid/family-targeted movies, while still having the opportunity to co-finance and co-produce those films, which will all be overseen by Fox Walden and distributed domestically by Fox.  Jeffrey Godsick, head of Fox Walden, rejoins Fox as EVP/Marketing and Digital Content, as well as retaining his Fox Walden title.  Godsick will report to Co-Presidents/Marketing, Tony Sella and Pam Levine on Fox movies.

TV Asahi acquires a controlling share of the animation studio Shin-ei Animation, putting up US$28.5 million for its increased stake to 90%, according to Anime News Network.  Shin-Ei Animation produces a range of anime series including Doraemon and Crayon Shin-chan, both of which air on TV Asahi.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Indiana Jones 5Harrison Ford says that George Lucas is “cooking up a suitable plot … ” for a fifth Indiana Jones movie in an interview with the LA TimesParamount released the fourth Indie film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull on May 22, 2008, which has so far earned $784 million worldwide ($317 million domestically), according to Box Office Mojo.  Meanwhile, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will debut on DVD and Blu-ray on October 14.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Aardman Animation‘s characters Wallace and Gromit will be the focus of a new young inventors exhibition at the London-based Science Museum.  Set to open in spring 2009, the six-month long exhibition is designed to encourage young inventors to create and about protecting their intellectual property, as well as respecting that of others.  The exhibit will feature a range of interactive exhibits and animated displays, all of which are themed around the creative and invention rich home of Wallace and Gromit.  The exhibition is funded by the British government’s UK Intellectual Property Office.
