Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, October 6, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Some details of the completed separation of Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks were issued yesterday afternoon.  As previously stated, David Geffen, a co-founder of DreamWorks who oversaw the transition for DreamWorks, will not be part of the new company.  Under the separation deal Steven Spielberg and Stacey Snider‘s new Reliance Big Entertainment backed movie company will take the lead on a number of development projects, which Paramount will have the option to co-finance and co-distribute.  All other projects that are currently in development will remain at Paramount, with the new studio having the opportunity to co-finance several projects to which Spielberg is attached.  Specific titles included under these first two points were not announced, which include kid/family titles, but are likely to be soon.  Additionally, Spielberg will continue to produce the Transformers franchise for Paramount as well as collaborating on three other Paramount movies including, When Worlds Collide.  A majority of the current DreamWorks staff is expected to be offered positions at the new Spielberg/Snider/Reliance company.

Walden Media and Fox Filmed Entertainment is undergoing a restructuring that will streamline their joint venture Fox Walden in an effort to make better use of Fox film marketing resources.  While the reconfigured Fox Walden will continue to exist, it will be housed within Fox and not as a standalone entity.  Walden and Fox, which are working together on movies including Tooth Fairy and Ramona, will continue to each develop kid/family-targeted movies, while still having the opportunity to co-finance and co-produce those films, which will all be overseen by Fox Walden and distributed domestically by Fox.  Jeffrey Godsick, head of Fox Walden, rejoins Fox as EVP/Marketing and Digital Content, as well as retaining his Fox Walden title.  Godsick will report to Co-Presidents/Marketing, Tony Sella and Pam Levine on Fox movies.

TV Asahi acquires a controlling share of the animation studio Shin-ei Animation, putting up US$28.5 million for its increased stake to 90%, according to Anime News Network.  Shin-Ei Animation produces a range of anime series including Doraemon and Crayon Shin-chan, both of which air on TV Asahi.

Indiana Jones 5Harrison Ford says that George Lucas is “cooking up a suitable plot … ” for a fifth Indiana Jones movie in an interview with the LA TimesParamount released the fourth Indie film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull on May 22, 2008, which has so far earned $784 million worldwide ($317 million domestically), according to Box Office Mojo.  Meanwhile, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will debut on DVD and Blu-ray on October 14.

LazyTown joins the V-me programming lineup in Spanish, where it will run Mondays-Fridays 7:30a and 11:30a, Saturdays at 9:3oa and 11:30a and Sundays at 4p as part of the network’s Family Block.

Kindle Entertainment‘s family drama movie Dustbin Baby (1×90) is set to premiere on BBC One later this year.  Based on the kid-targeted book of the same name by noted British author Jacqueline Wilson, the movie stars Juliet Stevenson (Truly, Madly Deeply, Bend it Like Beckham), Dakota Blue Richards (The Golden Compass) and David Haig (The Thing Blue Line, Four Weddings and a Funeral).  ITV Global Entertainment is distributing Dustbin Baby internationally.

Breakthrough Entertainment heads to Mipcom with a range of new animation, factual, dramatic and documentary programming content including some for kids such as:

  • Fishtronaut (52×11 or 26×30)  aimed at K4-7, the interactive animated series follows the adventures of a secret agent fish, as he and his pals a girl and a monkey solve mysteries above and below water. Fishtronaut is produced by TV PinGuim in association with Discovery Kids.  The series is available in HD.
  • Think Big (13×30)  The series looks at innovative kids creating and inventing toys, games, learning tools, websites and so forth.  Think Big is produced in association with TV Ontario. Format rights are available.

Cartoon One, a Rome-based indie production/distribution company, will showcase the initial footage of its new animated series Teen Days (26×26) at Mipcom Junior.  The series, which features an original soundtrack by the composing team of Angelo Poggi and Giovanni Cera (School For Vampires, Stone Age, Winx Club), is a co-production with RAI Fiction.  Teen Days revolves around a group of teens at a performing arts high school that form a band tom compete in an international music festival.  Cartoon One will also offer: ARPO (26×26), a 3D CGI animated series that follows the adventures of a robot in space, which is a co-production with Trunk Animation (Korea); a third season of School For Vampires (13×26, for a total of 78×13), a co-production with Hahn Film Germany; new episodes of the multi-media series Red Caps (26×26), a co-production with Epidem Zot Finland & Cinegroupe Canada.

For those getting ready to pack your bags and head to Cannes for Mipcom Junior (October 11-12) and Mipcom (October 13-17), it looks like the weekend will feature some fog with a chance of rain on Sunday, with highs around 70F/24C and lows around 50F/11C, while Monday and Tuesday see the sun shining and the temperatures about the same.  See you soon!

Aardman Animation‘s characters Wallace and Gromit will be the focus of a new young inventors exhibition at the London-based Science Museum.  Set to open in spring 2009, the six-month long exhibition is designed to encourage young inventors to create and about protecting their intellectual property, as well as respecting that of others.  The exhibit will feature a range of interactive exhibits and animated displays, all of which are themed around the creative and invention rich home of Wallace and Gromit.  The exhibition is funded by the British government’s UK Intellectual Property Office.
