Cynopsis: DIGITAL

10/06/08

Good morning, it’s Monday, October 6, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

The citizen journalist movement took it on the chin again on Friday as false reports spread that Apple CEO Steve Jobs had a heart attack. The story, which caught fire via Twitter, Digg and other services and was picked up on news blogs such as Silicon Alley Insider, initiated from a user generated posting on CNN’s iReport site (whose tagline is “unedited, unfiltered news.”) Apple’s stock price, which has been trading down as of late due to market conditions, took a dive on the news, falling more than 10% before recovering after the phony report was refuted. The SEC has already contacted iReport seeking details about who uploaded the report – the second false report about Jobs’ health to circulate since August (when Bloomberg mistakenly published an obit of the Apple CEO.)

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Consolidation in the online content world continues as Steve Case’s Revolution Health Network announced plans to merge with Waterfront Media in a deal valued at approximately $300 million. The combined companies will reach a total of 20 million unique users. Revolution is ramping up to compete with WebMD, which itself reaches about 38 million uniques and announced a deal last month to acquire QualityHealth.com. Waterfront Media CEO and co-founder Benjamin Wolin will be CEO of the combined company, while Revolution CEO Steve Case, co-founder of AOL, will join the Waterfront Media board.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Codeblack Interactive
has partnered with YouTube to provide the latest sponsored programming for the nascent Google Content Network (launched with Seth MacFarlane’s Cavalcade series this summer.) Boondocks head writer Yamara Taylor has signed on to create the first series for the Codeblack channel, to be syndicated across thousands of African American-targeted sites.

Raise your glass of Guinness – Facebook will be establishing its international headquarters in Dublin, Ireland to support technical and sales operations across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Sony is now accepting pre-orders for its next generation e-book Reader, the PRS-700BC, expected to be ready to ship on Nov. 14. The $400 device will come bundled with software that will make it easy to read Adobe PDF and Microsoft word documents and features a 6″ touch-screen interface allowing users to annotate documents by using a pen-type stylus. It is only .4 inches thick and weighs about 9 ounces.

Despite claims from the company that no new Kindle models are due out this year, rumors continue to swirl that a sequel to Amazon‘s e-book reader may hit the market by Christmastime. Tech blog Boy Genius Report even got its hands on some pictures – it’s got a sleeker design featuring smaller buttons that should prevent accidental page-turning, a common complaint about the initial Kindle.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Real Networks received a court order to temporarily shut down the RealDVD ripping service to give the judge a chance to review the details of the case, reports NewTeeVee. A visit to the site reveals the following message: “Due to recent legal action taken by the Hollywood movie studios against us, RealDVD is temporarily unavailable.”

More news broke on the digital cinema rollout as Sony inked deals with 20th Century Fox and Paramount to promote Sony digital cinema equipment. Fox, Paramount and Sony Pictures Entertainment will pay virtual print fees to exhibitors using Sony digital projection technology.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Venture Capital and Mergers and Acquisitions investment are down over the past three months across the digital media sector, according to new quarterly reports from UK-based StrategyEye. Digital Advertising, Mobile Content, Gaming, Social Media, Search and Online Media have all been adversely affected by the economic slowdown according to StrategyEye, which tracked 121 M&As, 161 Venture Capital and 253 Partnership deals across the sector in Q3 2008, at a total value of $45 billion. Trends include:

  • Consolidation and content partnerships indicate content providers see home TV sets as the best platform to attract a truly mainstream audience in the future
  • large ad players are moving into in-game advertising and social media advertising
  • funneling video content via social networks, content providers are trying to reach viewers where they spend a majority of their time online

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Dustin Moskovitz, who co-founded Facebook at Harvard with Mark Zuckerberg, announced he will be leaving the company in about a month, joining Facebook Engineering Manager Justin Rosenstein to form a new enterprise productivity software company. The software’s user interface will adopt many of Facebook’s tools and conventions in the hope that Facebook engineers will adopt them for the platform, according to a post on Mr. Rosenstein’s Facebook profile.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Tina Fey’s spot-on portrayal of Sarah Palin in SNL’s mock sketch of the VP debate was the thing to watch again online this weekend as the site itself attracted over 1 million views of the video, which also starred Queen Latifah as the PBS’ Gwen Ifill, the debate’s moderator. (This doesn’t even include emails and embeds to social networks, powered by an extensive Clearspring “Launchpad” widget distribution tool.) Tina’s Palin skits have been such a hit online – helping to increase traffic to NBC.com to unprecedented levels – one wonders if future TV talent will want compensation bonuses tied to online performance.
