Cynopsis: Kids!
10/04/10

Good morning. It’s Monday, October 4, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

BBC Worldwide, which is re-launching its channel websites, debuted the new international CBeebies (www.cbeebies.com) website over the weekend.  The refreshed site will offer geographic-specific content in CBeebies territories including South Africa, Asia, and Australia, as well as local language content for Latin America and Poland.  The CBeebies site features a new look and home for the CBeebies bugs, a unique underwater world that is designed to be stimulating and fun for kids.  The home page is a submarine that features videos, promos, activities, and games, as well as show links, among other things.  Where the website is available it features a short animation that provides kids with an explanation of how the bugs made their way to the new environment.  The site also features parent-targeted area that provides information suggested developmental activities for parents to do with their kids from educational experts.  BBC Worldwide plans to unveil other refurbished channel pages for BBC HD, BBC Entertainment, BBC Lifestyle and BBC Knowledge in the coming months.

Kenn Viselman and his itsy bitsy Entertainment Company unveils plans to launch Millipede (www.millipedetv.com), a kid-targeted “TV block” that will feature both live-action and animated programming, at the end of 2011.  To populate Millipede, Viselman and itsy bitsy are looking to producers/creators and students worldwide to submit preschool aimed short-form programming (15 seconds to 11 minutes).  The Millipede series is designed as a home for programming that may not “fit” into existing broadcast formats.  Viselman is currently in discussions with a number of international broadcast partners for the series.  Viselman recently produced the movie The Oogieloves and the Big Balloon Adventure and in pre-production two more features, The Oogieloves and The Big Family Adventure and The Oogieloves in The Big Holiday Adventure.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Canada’s Teletoon partners with Nerd Corps Entertainment to develop the new 3D animated series Endangered Species (52×11). Targeted to K6-11, Endangered Species follows the humorous adventures of a motley group of animals, including a recently liberated pet bunny and a stump-winged seagull trying to survive, while having a blast, in a forest near a big city.

The Foundation, which is now part of the new Zodiak Media Group, partner with TT Animation to create and produce the new CG animated preschool series Buddy Patrol (52×11).  The series revolves around the day-to-day experiences of a Buddy, a kid cop, and his helper, the at home viewer.  Together, Buddy and viewers help keep peace in Fair City, which is inhabited by a dragon, pirate, clown, cowboy and a yeti.  Zodiak Rights, part of Zodiak Media Group, which is the new international rights business of the combined RDF Rights and Zodiak Entertainment Distribution, holds the worldwide rights to Buddy Patrol.

CBeebies (UK) commission the new preschool series Tilly and Friends (52×11) from Ireland’s JAM Media and Walker Productions, the TV production arm of Walker Books.  Based on Polly Dunbar’s kid’s books, which are published by Walker Books, the series follows the adventures of Tilly and her animal pals and will launch in 2012.  JAM Media and Walker Productions developed the project together after jointly acquiring the worldwide TV and licensing and merchandising rights from Walker Books. Walker Licensing is handling the merchandising and licensing program in the UK.  The Tilly and Friends books are published n the US by Candlewick press, part of the Walker group, while publishers in France, Germany, Norway and Japan signed on to publish the books in those regions, with more publishing deals on the way.

HIT Entertainment enters into two new partnerships to develop new kid-targeted series, Pandz and Skeleracers (working title), which it is unveiling at MipJunior and Mipcom this week in Cannes.

  • HIT teams with Nick Cannon and his NCredible Entertainment for the new animated preschool series Pandz (26×24).  The music-centric series follows the adventures of a group of four panda siblings that form a band, writes their own music and tours the world.  The series will feature original music written by Cannon.
  • Sprite Animation is also teaming up with HIT for the K8-11 aimed CG animated action series Skeleracers (26×24).  The series revolves around Matt Sparks (16), the only living boy in a weird world populated by zombies, skeletons, and vampires, who is navigating treacherous Skullford Racing Academy to make his way home.
  • HIT is also featuring a sneak peek at its new K8-11 targeted animated comedy For the Birds, which comes from producers Tom Ruegger (Tiny Toon Adventures, Animaniacs, and Pinky & the Brain) and Randy Rogel (Pinky & the Brain, Looney Tunes show, Winnie the Pooh among others).

Creating4Kids (C4K) acquires the development and production rights to the kid book series, The Milo & Jazz Mysteries (26×30), from publisher Kane Press.  C4K plans to develop and produce a K6-21 targeted animated TV series based on the eight book series by Lewis B. Montgomery (pen name of author Mara Rockliff).  Noted writer Rick Copp (Scooby-Doo, Fingerprints & Facelifts, Teen Titans, The Brady Bunch Movie, The Golden Girls) will pen the series and co-produce with Christopher Keenan, President, Creating4Kids.  The Milo & Jazz Mysteries follows the adventures of two young suburban sleuths who solve mysteries of all kinds with the guidance of their mentor, Dash Marlowe.  The fifth book in the series, The Case of the July 4th Jinx, released earlier this month, while book six, The Case of the Missing Moose, is slated for release in early 2011, followed by book seven, The Case of the Purple Pool, later in the year. C4K is showcasing the series this week at Mipcom.

Wonder Woman and David E. Kelley? A Wonder Woman TV reboot is being developed by Warner Bros., based of course on the DC Comic character, which is being written and produced by Kelley (Ally McBeal, Boston Legal, The Practice among others), per Heat Vision.
