Good morning. It’s Monday, October 4, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Thursday night’s coverage of the Presidential debates is sustained coverage (no commercials) and is not rated by Nielsen. However, for the Big 3 nets, the 30m political analysis following is rated. The averages for those networks carrying the debates do not include 9-1030pm. CBS’ average on the night led with a 6.0/16 A18-49 rating according to Nielsen Media Research, with NBC hot on the hunt with a 5.2/14. Survivor on CBS at 8pm earned a 7.5/21 for hte hour, ahead of Joey’s 5.4/16 and Will & Grace’s 5.5/14 on NBC. As far as the post-debate analysis, NBC led at 1030p with a 4.8/12, followed by a virtual tie between CBS and ABC, each posting an 8 share.
Despite the sustained debate coverage not being rated, we do know how many viewers tuned in – 62.5 million checked out the 90m broadcast, with NBC leading the charge with 17.2 million, followed by CBS’ 13.5 million, ABC 11.5 million and Fox 5.2 million. However, Fox News Channel led the cable brigade with 9.6 million viewers, while CNN had 4.4 million and MSNBC 1.2 million. Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart delivered 2.4 million viewers with its post-debate analysis, the most viewed ep of this show ever. MSNBC’s Chris Matthews had 1.9 million viewers tune in for his post debate analysis, while Fox News Channel dropped off to 7.9 million from 1030-11p.
NBC led on Friday night with a 2.8/10 A18-49 according to fast national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. ABC followed with a 2.3/8, then CBS 2.0/7, Fox 1.4/5, WB 1.2/4, UPN 0.9/3. At 8pm CBS and NBC tied, each delivering a 2.2/8, with ABC a very close #2, scoring a 2.0/7 for the hour, with freshman series Complete Savages at 830p earning a 2.0/7, dropping just one share point from its leadin. Repeat sitcoms on Fox delivered a 1.5/6. At 9pm NBC was ahead with a 3.0/10 for Third Watch, while ABC’s sitcoms Hope & Faith and Less Than Perfect earned a collective 2.3/8. At 10p NBC’s new series Medical Investigation was #1 with a 3.5/11, while CBS’s newbie dr. vegas was #3 with a 1.9/5. ABC’s 20/20 split the difference with a 2.6/8.
On the strength of its new dramatic series Lost, ABC won the night on Saturday with a 2.8/9 A18-49 according to Nielsen Media Research. Fox was #2 with a 2.8/9, followed by CBS and NBC tied with a 2.0/7. At 8pm ABC posted a 2.7/10 with Lost, with Fox’s double run of Cops following with a 2.1/7. Survivor’s repeat on CBS earned 1.4/5, behind NBC’s Funniest Moments (1.6/6). At 9pm ABC again was in front with Lost’s 3.2/10, while Fox and CBS were tied at #2 with a 2.4/8. At 10p NBC led with Law & Order SVU’s 2.9/9. ABC’s new series Wife Swap [r] earned a 2.6/8.
