VERONICA MARS: NANCY DREW FOR A NEW GENERATION Season 2 Premiere Delivers +50% A18-34, +30% A18-49, +133% Teens VERONICA MARS
Good morning. It’s Monday, October 3, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing. An early 2005-06 television season program change comes this Wednesday night as NBC flip-flops The Apprentice: Martha Stewart and E-Ring. Starting this week, Martha will air at 9p, and E-Ring at 8p. That change means E-Ring will be the only drama of its kind at 8p (One Tree Hill is the only other drama in the time period, tho of a decidedly different nature than E-Ring). And aside from Nanny 911 on Fox, Martha will be the only other unscripted series at 9p (which will change with the baseball playoff schedule on Fox beginning next week). According to Variety, in its first airing, UPN’s Sex, Love and Secrets attracted a crowd of just 1.4 million in its target 18-34 demo. With seven more episodes already produced, the premiere turnout was small enough to slide production into idle for the time being, until the network sees if the show rebounds. The show will continue to air on Tuesdays at 9p. Better news on Fox’s Reunion set as the network orders up four more scripts, which of course is no guarantee of anything, but is considerably better than halting production. The show follows The O.C. on Thursday nights. Tonight’s Premiere: * MORE GOOD STUFF *Sci Fi Channel has picked up a package of a dozen films from Lions Gate Entertainment, to the tune of $12 million in licensing fees. According to Variety, the films in the package include Saw, Cabin Fever, Alone in the Dark and House of the Dead. The license term for the package is four years, and the network will get multiple runs of each title. Four titles in the package were direct to video and the window for those kicks in this year. The other feature film titles will come to the network in April 2006 at the earliest. Perhaps this means John O’Hurley is the biggest winner of Dancing with the Stars. Come January 16, O’Hurley will take his dancing feet to Broadway, stepping into the role of legal whiz Billy Flynn in Chicago. Weekend Box Office Estimates: September 30-October 2, 2005 * NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *ABC is giving consideration to a project with Melissa Etheridge, the Grammy winning star told Time magazine. The project is reportedly about Etheridge’s life, had she opted to stick around her Kansas home and became a teacher rather than an internationally known musical artist. Despite working on two current series, Martha Stewart has more plans – a third series. Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia has purchased an antique house in Norwalk, Connecticut, which will be the home base of her new home, body and mind makeover series. The 13-ep series will focus on six women who are in the midst of a major life change (emerging from bankruptcy, the welfare system, a drug rehab center, etc.) The women will not only learn all about renovating the house, they’ll all each be individually mentored with people helping them learn valuable life skills. 20th has signed producer Barry Josephson to a two year development/production deal. Josephson is the exec producer of Fox’s new series Bones. According to Hollywood Reporter, former American Idol contestant Constantine Maroulis is working on a sitcom project with Grammnet Prods and ABC, produced by Paramount Network Television. The project is still in the early stages and no details are available on the concept yet. ABC had previously signed Maroulis to a talent holding deal. HBO has ordered a script of a new project about a divorced dad living with his teenage son. The project comes from Two Angels Prods and Brillstein-Grey, with Bob Saget set to exec prod, co-write and star in the drama series, per Variety. According to Saget, the project is fairly close to his own life as a divorced dad. * EXECUTIVE MOVES *Irv Schulman has been named SVP/Advertising Sales and Marketing for Buena Vista Television Advertising Sales. The announcement was made by Howard Levy, EVP, to whom Irv will report. In his newly expanded role, Irv will add management responsibility for Buena Vista Television’s Advertising Marketing & Research Group to his previous responsibilities as VP/East Coast Ad Sales. John Garcia has been upped to VP/GM of Latin America, Warner Bros. International Television Distribution. The announcement was made by Jeffrey Schlesinger, President, WBITD. In his new role, John will have overall responsibility for the sales, marketing and distribution of WBITD product, including television series and movies, animated series and feature films to broadcast, cable, satellite and emerging television platforms in Latin America. He will relocate from WBITD’s Madrid office to Miami and report to Malcolm Dudley Smith, EVP/ Sales and Business Development. * RATINGS *Thursday — A18-49 Analysis: Another strong Thursday from CBS with an overall 7.2/19 A18-49, according to final numbers from Nielsen Media Research.
