YouTube has officially unveiled its initiative to offer channels consisting of original content produced for the video site, and without skipping a beat, numerous content providers and media companies have already jumped on board. Clevver Media has signed up to create three channels focused on entertainment news, style for women and a channel devoted to Spanish-speaking audiences. Similarly, EQAL has announced that its u look haute channel will cater to style and fashion-conscious teens. Red Bull House North America will re-launch its offering in January 2012 to bring viewers a variety of series featuring action sports. If you’re looking for a comedy fix, My Damn Channel: Live will produce a weekly 30-minute live sketch comedy series complemented by 10-minute daily features. Young Hollywood Network will create several shows focusing on pop culture and trends in the film industry. TakePart, the digital social action network for Participant Media, will also take part by creating a variety of content focused on socially-conscious people. The Digital Broadcasting Channel will bring viewers a channel devoted to home & design. According to AllThingsD, Google will front up to $5 million to producers to create a couple hours of weekly content for channels, and once programmers have earned back their advance from the company, they will split ad revenue. The programming will be exclusive YouTube property for at least the first year of the three-year deals.
Hulu has announced a new five-year licensing agreement with The CW Network that will bring current season programming from the channel to both the free and paid versions of the video site. The plan will also follow the new post-air viewing business model where Hulu Plus subscribers will have access to an episode the day after it airs, while non-subscribers wait for eight days.
Hulu is not done, as it has also inked a deal with Hat Trick International (HTI), the company behind the Matt LeBlanc-starring ShowTime series Episodes, to bring HTI’s collection of U.K. television shows to the video site’s U.S. audience. Popular shows that will be available on Hulu include new comedy series Spy, along with established hits such as Outnumbered, The Worst Week of My Life and The Kumars at No. 42.
The A.V. Club has announced the premiere of One Track Mind, a new music video series that shows the site visiting musicians to discuss the creative process and influence behind one of their popular songs. For ten weeks, which began on Oct. 27, a new five-minute video will post on the site every Thursday and will combine interviews with performance footage. After each video’s online premiere, IFC will also air it as part of its “Featured Feature” primetime content block on Saturdays at 8 pm ET, beginning on November 8.
Club Penguin from Disney Online Studios has announced an enhancement to its virtual social network for kids designed to create a safer online experience. The new Chat system allows users to communicate faster by incorporating close to 300,000 pre-approved phrases that eliminates the danger of abusive language appearing in messages. The Friends functionality includes new personalized avatars, an ability to sort and find friends and an upcoming feature that enables users to instantly go to a location where their friends are in the virtual world.
To promote the release of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim video game, game developer Bethesda Softworks is teaming up with brand agency AKQA to create a multi-platform marketing campaign that includes a live-action TV spot, which will be aired on ESPN, NBC, Versus, AMC and Spike, and an official website built on HTML5.
According to data from buying solutions provider STRATA, and as reported by eMarketer, U.S. ad agencies say that 34% of clients were thinking the most about online advertising in the third quarter of 2011, which is up from 24% in the previous quarter. At the same time, the percentage of clients whose main focus was on TV spots dropped from 41% to 35%. When it came to types of online advertising formats and the number of agencies who purchased mobile advertising for their clients, the numbers remained static.
Publishers and media companies have better ad revenue opportunities for in-stream ads on professionally made content, finds a report from video ad serving company Auditude, whose clients include MLB and Comcast. The completion rate of in-stream ads while watching professional content was much higher (68%) than for user-generated content (52%). Other findings include:
- Mid-roll ads had the highest completion rate at 75%, which indicates that viewers will accept ad breaks in exchange for premium content.
- Live content leads to greater viewer engagement when compared to VOD (86% completion rate versus 60%, respectively).
- Overlay ads are viewed as intrusive and action-oriented products for brands, which is why they are more common within user-generated content than professional productions.
NASCAR.com has unveiled the NASCAR.com Live app for Google TV. Via the app, viewers can access a variety of content such as HD on-demand videos, driver profiles, standings and schedules for its three signature racing leagues: the Sprint Cup Series, Nationwide Series and Camping World Truck Series. The app also provides a second-screen experience as users can pull it up while watching a Sprint Cup Series race and receive lap-by-lap statistics and updates. And to top it all off, the app can be hooked up to a viewer’s TV service’s picture-in-picture mode.
Nova Scotia-based Huminah Huminah Animation has partnered up with ZiggityZoom to develop a Feed the Monster mobile app, based on the ZiggityZoom property of the same name. The game allows you to create a monster and features numerous mini-games including food fight, food catch and feed the monster. The iOS app launches in time for the holidays with the Android version coming to you in February 2012.
Arkadium, a provider of game solutions for big brands, has hired Jean-Guy Niquet as Director of Arkadium Canada. As the first member of the Arkadium Canada division, Niquet will be in charge of staffing the team along with starting the mobile development of Arkadium Canada as the company attempts to bring 10 new games into the market within the next 12 months.
About.com has expanded its advertising team. Cathy Boyle will come on board as Vice President of Sales for the Eastern Region, while Traci Vrana will take up a similar post as Vice President, Sales, Central and West Coast. Both women will report to Frank Minishak, who is the vice president of national sales and will oversee the management and strategic support for the sales and client services teams in their respective regions.

To submit your workplace and group of co-workers for the small screen, you must post a YouTube video via a private link. In early 2012, finalists will be invited to meet with producers to develop compelling pitches based around their submissions/companies in order to present them to networks both in Canada and around the globe.
