Cynopsis

10/31/05

Good morning. It’s Monday, October 31, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

OLN has reached an agreement to be carried on Cablevision Systems Corp. as part of its iO digital service. The OLN lineup includes NHL Hockey, Tour de France, and the syndicated episodes of Survivor.

Sony Pictures Television has cleared its newest 30m daily court series Judge Maria Lopez in seven of the top ten markets for its September 2006 launch. Overall, Judge Maria Lopez has been cleared in more than 35% of the country, including WPIX/NY, WCIU/Chicago, KYW and WPSG/Philadelphia, WBZ and WSBK/Boston, KBHK and KPIX/San Francisco, KTVT and KTXA/Dallas and WUPA/Atlanta. Other markets picking up the show include WKBD and WWJ/Detroit, WTOG/Tampa, WBFS and WFOR/Miami, KDKA and WNPA/Pittsburgh, WDJT and WMLW/Milwaukee, WTCN and WTVX/West Palm and WGNT/Norfolk.

You’ve probably been sitting around wondering what ever happened to that drama series The White Shadow? You probably haven’t seen it since it was on TV Land about five years ago. Well, it’s back and it’ll be on NBA TV starting this week. The 20th TV series will kick off the channel’s 2005-06 basketball season, during its one week free preview (Nov 1-8). Also airing this week is a documentary on the life and times of Phil Jackson and Larry Brown called Phil & Larry: The Maverick & the Purist.

The Food Network will launch an internet-only series on November 21st called Eat This with Dave Lieberman at www.foodnetwork.com. Food Network fans know Dave from his current on-air series Good Deal with Dave Lieberman. The network has ordered 13 episodes, each in the three to five minute range, with three new webisodes each week. Each ep will also include interactive content such as recipes and a travelogue.

Promoting its upcoming hit film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, the Walt Disney Co. is the official sponsor of the US entry into the Volvo Ocean Race (formerly known as the Whitbread Round the World Race). An 8-month 31,250 mile sailing race that circumnavigates the globe, the starting line is in Vigo, Spain, and the starting cannon will fire on November 12. The 70-foot Disney-sponsored sloop will have a definite pirate feel – from its skull and crossed swords logo on the sail, to the name Black Pearl on the transom. Also the sail number is 7706 – and coincidentally the film will be released on July 7, 2006. The race has nine legs, including Baltimore (estimated arrival April 17) and New York City (May 8), finishing up in Gothenburg, Sweden on June 17.

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *

ABC has picked up a new project called Life of Leisure from Fox TV Studio. It is an unscripted series, along he same lines as Curb Your Enthusiasm, where an elaborate outline is created guiding the actors to move the story from point A to point B, and thereafter the actors improvise the script. Says Variety, the story is about an adult man who moves back in with his parents, who have since moved into a retirement community.

Fox has ordered up another series from Jerry Bruckheimer called American Crime, says Variety. This project focuses on the high-powered celebrity lawyers of Los Angeles, choosing their clients, going about their legal business of getting their clients out of trouble. Tyler Bensinger will write and co-exec prod; David McNally will direct and exec prod.

Polly Bergen will join the cast of ABC’s Commander in Chief as mom to the President MacKenzie Allen, played by Geena Davis. The first episode with Bergen will air on November 29.

Touchstone Television has signed executive producer Jim Parriott to an extended multi-year seven-figure development deal, according to Variety. The deal will keep him as showrunner on Grey’s Anatomy, as well as develop new projects for the studio.

Comedy Central has picked up a second season of Mind of Mencia starring Carlos Mencia. Per Hollywood Reporter, Mencia will also shoot a one hour stand up special, as well as host 30-city tour under the Comedy Central name.

The History Channel
presents This Day in History:
1926-Harry Houdini, the most celebrated magician and escape artist of the 20th century, dies of peritonitis in a Detroit hospital. Twelve days before, Houdini had been talking to a group of students after a lecture in Montreal when he commented on the strength of his stomach muscles and their ability to withstand hard blows. Suddenly, one of the students punched Houdini twice in the stomach. The magician hadn’t had time to prepare, and the blows ruptured his appendix. He fell ill on the train to Detroit, and, after performing one last time, was hospitalized. Doctors operated on him, but to no avail. The burst appendix poisoned his system, and on October 31 he died.

Answer to Friday’s Trivia Question Courtesy of Gary Griffin-The Gugenheim Agency/Houston: On Star Trek, everyone knows the Vulcan greeting of “Live Long and Prosper.” There is a second one. It was spoken to Ambassador Sarek, Mr. Spock’s father, in only one movie. What was the greeting? “MAY YOUR JOURNEY BE FREE OF INCIDENTS.” No correct responses to this one, but among our favorite wrong answers were: “I am pleased to see that we are different,” “May we together become greater than the sum of both of us” and “Get a Life.”

A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM COURT TV
It is a dark and stormy night.
The wind whistles in the rain-wet trees.
At the end of a lonely road, a light
flickers through the windows of an
old mansion. Upon closer inspection,
the light turns out to be the glow from
a television set. And the people inside are
watching… PSYCHIC DETECTIVES. Wednesdays at 10PM E/P.
Only on Court TV.
P.S. Boo. And Happy Halloween.

Today’s Trivia Question:
Here’s the description – you give me the show name: Syndicated musical variety series starring a guy who also starred in TJ Hooker. Three C-level celebrities judge amateurs dancing to the hottest disco hits of the day. (click here with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
