Cynopsis: DIGITAL
10/29/12
Good morning. It’s Monday, October 29, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Warner Bros. is coming on board as the first studio partner for Redbox Instant by Verizon, the upcoming subscription streaming and rental service that aims to compete with Netflix and Amazon for a slice of the digital video pie. The deal will bring the studio’s library of film titles to the service, allowing users to stream content on-demand or rent it. Per a separate multiyear deal, Redbox has also agreed to give Warner Bros. a 28-day retail window before selling the studio’s DVDs at their kiosks. In addition, Redbox says it plans to join the Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE) and has agreed to promote UltraViolet via promotions and marketing campaigns designed to raise awareness for the digital locker service among consumers. While currently in beta testing, Redbox Instant by Verizon should be available to everyone by the end of the year.
WIGS, a scripted drama YouTube original channel created by Rodrigo Garcia and Jon Avnet, is premiering a new series today called Audrey. Pitching it as Sex and the City meets Julie & Julia, the show follows the titular character, a foodie, as she tries to rise up the ranks of the culinary world. Starring Kim Shaw (How I Met Your Mother), the show was written by Leah Rachel and is directed by Betty Thomas. Audrey also stars Gary Cole (Office Space), Arielle Kebbel (The Vampire Diaries), and Bobby Campo (The Final Destination).
Style Coalition has added a “shelter vertical,” an expansion of its existing partnership with Hearst Digital Media. What this means is that Style Coalition, the self-described “influencer marketing platform,” is signing up a bunch of home design and decor sites and social media influencers to this vertical, which will all together add more than 500,000 unique monthly visitors to Style’s digital media network. “We are excited to welcome the new members to our coalition and look forward to helping them grow their online brands and businesses,” said Style Coalition Founder & CEO Yuli Ziv. The company says this expansion also allows it to broaden its reach beyond brands outside the fashion and beauty verticals, while still maintaining focus on the “stylish lifestyle consumer.” The new sites under this vertical cover a variety of topics, ranging from DIY home renovation to color and design. Per its partnership with Hearst Digital Media, Style says it will work with brands and agencies to develop integrated social media programs that tap into the influence of the sites within the shelter vertical. These can range from simple themed posts to full-room makeover series, as well as plans to develop home design programming on Style’s online video channel, SCTV.

Yahoo says it will not comply with Microsoft’s decision to make the “Do Not Track” setting in Internet Explorer 10 the default option. Announcing it via a post on the company’s policy blog, Yahoo said, “In principle, we support ‘Do Not Track’ (DNT). Unfortunately, because discussions have not yet resulted in a final standard for how to implement DNT, the current DNT signal can easily be abused.” Yahoo also takes issue with the whole notion of users no longer having the initial choice of whether or not they want to be tracked and thus receive targeted ads. “Ultimately, we believe that DNT must map to user intent — not to the intent of one browser creator, plug-in writer, or third-party software service,” said Yahoo. The company also noted that it’s “committed to working with the World Wide Web Consortium” to establish a DNT standard that everyone can agree on.
Juniper Research estimates that worldwide smartphone shipments topped 157 million in the third quarter of this year. According to Juniper, Samsung lead the way by shipping a record 56.3 million smartphones during Q3, representing almost double the market share of Apple, which sold 26.9 million iPhones (to be fair, with the iPhone 5 launching at the very end of the third quarter, these numbers should not serve as the final say on the Apple/Samsung battle). Juniper agrees, as the research firm says that Apple’s “refreshed product line, including the iPhone 5,” along with the on-set of the holiday season, should boost Apple’s sales in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, Samsung’s flagship smartphone device, the Galaxy S3, accounted for a significant chunk of Samsung’s smartphone sales in Q3, with estimated sales of 18 million.
Over 181.4 million Americans watched more than 39.36 billion videos in September 2012, according to the latest comScore Video Metrix data. That amounts to roughly 216.9 videos and 1,399 minutes per viewer. Google maintained its stranglehold of the top spot with 150.3 million total unique viewers in September 2012. The rest of the top 10 fills out in the following order: Yahoo (57.4 million total unique viewers), AOL (53.8 million), VEVO (50.3 million), Facebook (46.4 million), Grab Media (41 million), Viacom Digital (40.9 million), NDN (40.5 million), Microsoft (36.7 million), and Amazon (31.2 million). Among the other notable online video services, Hulu slotted in at #16 with 21.3 million total unique viewers in September, and Netflix took the #21 spot with 16.2 million.
