10/22/07

Good Morning.  It’s Monday, October 22, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Members of the Writers Guild of America, West (WGAW) and the Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE) have unified and voted to authorize a strike if WGA negotiators feel a “fair and reasonable” contract cannot be worked out with the networks and studios once the current contract expires October 31. Negotiations began between the two factions July 16, yet progress has been minimal on key issues such as compensation and residuals for new media, contract enforcement, Guild jurisdiction and a proposed increase in the DVD formula. Members of WGAW and WGAE cast 5,507 votes with 90.3% voting to authorize a potential strike. Talks are expected to continue today at WGAW headquarters in Los Angeles.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

This month iN DEMAND Networks introduced two new hi-def sports channels, GameHD and TeamHD, located in the regular sports package area of the cable system’s line-up. TeamHD will air all the NBA scheduled HD games through the NBA League Pass package and GameHD will air HD NHL games on NHL Center Ice in addition to HD MLB games as part of next year’s MLB Extra Innings package.

I want my MTV!  Who’s MTV is it?  Hungary’s Magyar Televizio, also known as MTV, sued MTV Music Television in connection to those three initials, claiming trademark infringement after the music network debuted its Hungarian-language MTV channel in the country this month.  Magyar Televizio is celebrating its 50th year this year and has a registered trademark for “MTV” with the Hungarian Patent Office.

The cast also include Blythe Danner and Robert Wagner, and the project is from Twentieth Century Fox TV.

The NBC drama cop pilot Blue Blood, also from Twentieth Century Fox TV, has added Laurenz Tate.

There’s another psychic on the horizon, and this one talks to babies, reports THRDerek Ogilvie is the author of The Baby Mind Reader, and his new show Baby’s Will is Met will launch in the Netherlands this fall on RTL 4, and produced by Weller/Grossman Prods.  The producers are now talking to network here in the US to bring the show here.

The NBC drama pilot, thus far untitled, about a NY law firm where the lawyers will do whatever is necessary to get the job done, has added two more cast members.  Megan Dodds and Christina Vidal have joined the Universal Media Studios project which will be directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, says THR. Dodds plays a lawyer in the firm who is also the daughter of a senior partner, and draws the attention of two lawyers in the firm – one who will do anything to get ahead, the other with a slightly stronger moral compass. Vidal plays a law student who also works as an assistant to the attorney with a conscience.
