11/06/06

Good morning. It’s Monday, November 6, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

After just one airing, Fox has pulled The Rich List from its Wednesday night schedule.  The Rich List debuted with a 1.5/4 A18-49, down three share points from its Bones lead-in. Filling the one hour hole on Wednesday nights will be another original episode of The O.C. There is some speculation Fox would ultimately like to return The O.C. to Wednesday nights, and devote Thursdays to an all comedy lineup.  And one other change for Fox – Happy Hour is now officially off the schedule. Filing in on Thursday nights at 830p will be a rerun of ‘Til Death.

NBC has also made a program change by moving up its scheduled plans to take Twenty Good Years off the schedule.  Beginning this week on Wednesdays, NBC will air an extended version of The Biggest Loser, airing from 8-10p.  The other Wednesday comedy, 30 Rock, will as originally planned moved to Thursdays as of 11/16.

Tonight’s Finale:
Lifetime:  Off the Leash at 630p

Nielsen Media Research has decided to wait indefinitely on releasing its first-ever Average Commercial Minute MIT Data File Service, measuring the number of people watching commercial minutes. The service, which was delayed from its original release date, was scheduled to begin December 11. The delay is presumably due to disagreements between Nielsen clients and how they would like to see the data configured regarding DVR vs. live commercial minutes. Nielsen plans to schedule a meeting with clients to discuss the best configuration for the data and after that will figure out a date to roll out the new service.

Bill O’Reilly is embroiled in a controversy and a potential investigation involving comments he made on his show last Friday night. With Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline as a guest, O’Reilly made comments on-air pertaining to an abortion clinic in Kansas. Citing an “inside source” at the clinic, O’Reilly said the clinic, led by Dr. George Tiller, performed late-term abortions and failed to report alleged rapes of victims aged 10 to 15 years. Dr. Tiller has called for an investigation of the state Attorney General and O’Reilly over these comments, concerned that patient’s records have been made public. Dr. Tiller plans on asking the Kansas Supreme Court to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate and take possession of the records of 90 patients from two clinics. Attorney General Kline is a strong abortion opponent and is currently in a tight re-election battle with Democrat Paul Morrison.  In 2004 Kline requested the patient records from the clinic, which the clinic said would be tantamount to invasion of privacy and doctor/patient confidentiality.  Only recently did Kline receive the records.  Kline says he did not provide the “inside” information to O’Reilly, nor did his office. Attorneys who represent Dr. Tiller and the clinics said it was “preposterous” that the information came from an insider at one of the clinics. At this time, it is not clear if O’Reilly’s source had broken state or federal laws by revealing patient information or if O’Reilly himself or his staff viewed the actual records. Both O’Reilly and his show’s staff would not comment to the press over the weekend.

* BROADBAND & DIGITAL *

CBS has launched a new broadband-only series on its Innertube site today.  The Papdits was originally created for primetime television, but after two years in development, first on Fox and then with CBS, it had been passed on last May.  A quick revival – and now it will show up on Innertube, as well as available to Verizon V-Cast customers from CBS. The Papdits is about a family from Kashmir who are traveling the US by RV.  The docu-comedy series focuses on the family’s interaction with “unsuspecting Americans” during their travels.  Produced by Bull’s Eye Entertainment and Sony/CBS Paramount, the project is written by Ant Hines.

* PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT *

CBS has ordered up a new 13 episode series from Mark Burnett Prods., an unscripted series that has a decided pirate theme.  According to Variety, the series will not be simply Survivor on a pirate ship, but says the action will take place both on land an on sea.  Casting is expected to begin shortly, and the untitled series could be on the air by summer.

Rumors abound that the previous episode order of 13 for the NBC project Singles Table from 20th Century Fox, has received a reduced order for only 6 episodes. These rumors come on the tail of the news NBC is cutting costs, including programming costs.

John Corbett will join the Showtime comedy pilot Manchild based on a BBC series about four male friends in the midst of midlife crises. Corbett’s character, a pot-smoking former Deadhead, has regular setbacks with both work and women.

Fox has ordered a script from Tommy Schlamme to produce a US version of the Canadian series The Tournament about an underdog kids baseball team as it makes its way thru an entire baseball season.  If it sounds familiar to US viewers, could be you saw the Canadian show on US cable network OLN (now known as Versus) last season.  Exec producing for Fox are three from the original Canadian series – Howard Busgang, Howard Nemetz and Marty Putz.

Even before season three has launched, ABC Family has ordered Season #4 of Wildfire, with a 13-episode order.  Produced by Lionsgate, season #3 is scheduled to launch on January 1st at 8pm, and Season #4 is looking at a fall debut, says Variety.

Casting Call: SiTV is looking for rappers, ranters, poets and just plain folks’ opinions on various topics for its new Flow & Tell music video series.  Set to debut in 2007, the show mixes people’s thoughts with music videos. It will visit San Antonio on November 7 (11a-5p). More info at www.sitv.com .
