Cynopsis: DIGITAL
11/05/12

Good morning. It’s Monday, November 5, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Worldwide Android shipments reached 136 million units in the third quarter of 2012, representing three-fourths of all smartphone shipments during that time period, according to the latest figures from IDC. This also equals a 91.5% year-over-year growth for Android smartphone shipments, which is almost double that of the overall market growth rate (46.4%). “In every year since [Android launched in 2008], Android has effectively outpaced the market and taken market share from the competition. In addition, the combination of smartphone vendors, mobile operators, and end-users who have embraced Android has driven shipment volumes higher,” said Ramon Llamas, Research Manager/Mobile Phones at IDC. “The share decline of smartphone operating systems not named iOS since Android’s introduction isn’t a coincidence,” added Kevin Restivo, Senior Research Analyst with IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. “The smartphone operating system isn’t an isolated product, it’s a crucial part of a larger technology ecosystem” in which Google is a major player, he said. Other numbers from IDC include:

  • iOS, which can be found on the iPhone, accounted for 14.9% of the market share in Q3, with a total 26.9 million iPhones shipped during the quarter. IDC says the introduction of the iPhone 5 and lower prices on older models prevented sales from slipping to that of Q3 2011 levels.
  • BlackBerry’s market share continued to fall, dropping to 4.3% (7.7 million shipments) in Q3.
  • Microsoft’s Windows Phone devices reached 3.6 million total shipments (2% market share). This could change as Windows 8 devices start rolling out to the market.

CBS and Netflix have reached an accord to extend their existing international streaming deal. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed. Netflix subscribers in Canada, the UK and Ireland, and Latin America will have access to previous seasons of Showtime’s Dexter as well as CBS’ library content such as Charmed, The 4400, and Jericho. Previous seasons of current CBS shows like The Good Wife and Hawaii Five-O, plus Showtime franchises like House of Lies and The Borgias, will be available to international subscribers on a territory-by-territory basis.

Bravo is premiering two new reality series this week that have much to do with the web. The first, which debuts tonight at 10pm ET, is Start-Ups: Silicon Valley. Executive produced by Randi Zuckerberg, the show follows the lives of six young tech entrepreneurs as they try to become the next big thing in SV. As mentioned last week, Bravo launched a digital campaign promoting the series to let fans determine their own influence based on their social media presence. The second show, which will premiere this Wednesday at 11pm ET, is LOLWork. This show follows the office antics of Ben Huh, the CEO of ICanHasCheezburger.com, and his staff. To promote this show, Bravo has already posted the series premiere in full online. On the show page, fans can also browse video tours of the company’s HQ as well as video tips on creating animal-themed memes. As for Bravo’s existing TV franchises, Top Chef: Seattle returns this Wednesday night at 10pm ET. This also means that Bravo’s Emmy-nominated Last Chance Kitchen digital series also returns, giving eliminated chefs a chance to re-enter the TV competition.

British TV streaming service Acorn TV is premiering Midsomer Murders, Set 21 in North America today. This is in advance of the four-episode package being available for purchase on DVD and Blu-ray beginning on January 8. On Acorn TV, subscribers can immediately watch those four feature-length episodes from series 14 of Midsomer Murders, with the first one being available to stream for free. Acorn Premium subscribers can access the detective drama’s full slate of more than 125 hours of programming.

Mobile app advertising and analytics firm Flurry has received $25 million “in an oversubscribed Series D” round of financing led by Crosslink Capital. The Series D round also included full participation from existing investors Menlo Ventures, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, InterWest Partners, Union Square Ventures, and others, bringing Flurry’s total amount raised to date to $51.6 million. Flurry says it will use the new funds to accelerate adoption of its supply-side platform, Flurry AppSpot, and its ad effectiveness solution, Flurry Ad Analytics. The money will also go towards international expansion. The company reports that it’s currently measuring 1.9 billion app sessions across over 250 million unique smartphone and tablet devices. The number of apps that use Flurry’s measurement services now stands at 250,000, spanning all the notable mobile platforms, from iOS and Android to HTML5 and JavaME.

LongTail Video, a self-serve video solutions provider for small and medium sized publishers, has raised $5 million in Series B financing led by Greycroft Partners with participation from Cue Ball Capital. Also serving as the company’s first institutional round, the fresh capital will be directed toward product development as well as expanding the company’s sales and marketing efforts. If you’ve watched enough videos online, you’ve probably come across LongTail’s JW Player. It’s the company’s flagship product, designed to allow publishers of varying sizes to get into the online video game. “Our mission has always been to provide publishers with a solution that eliminates the technology hurdles so they can create high-quality video viewing experiences for their audiences at an affordable price,” says Dave Otten, LongTail’s CEO. The company says the JW Player currently runs on 2 million websites and generates on average over 3 billion steams per month.

Windows 8 offers an in-app advertising feature called Ads in Apps, which allows brands to run campaigns on any device powered by Microsoft’s new operating system. The company recently announced that so far it has signed up 25 global brands to run campaigns via this new feature. These include heavyweights such as Coca-Cola, 20th Century Fox, Ford, Cadillac, Intel, and Citi. Microsoft Advertising said that the ads will appear within various Bing apps, Xbox apps, the Skype app, and third-party apps independently developed by its publishing partners. Of note, 20th Century Fox and Nissan are the first two brand partners to plan global campaigns using Windows 8 Ads in Apps (the other brand partners are at least initially focusing on a specific region, such as Coca-Cola targeting Brazil and Cadillac focusing on North America). To promote the Ang Lee-directed film Life of Pi, Fox plans on running ads within the Xbox Video app, SmartGlass app, and the Casual Games app.
