Good morning, it’s Monday, November 30, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
With consumers growing more and more weary of fighting the crowds on Black Friday, online sales spiked considerably this year both in terms of traffic and amount spent. The average online order on Black Friday jumped to $170.19, an increase of 35%, thanks to aggressive online and email promotions, according to Coremetrics. The number of items per order jumped as well by 18% to 5.4, while the % of sessions that yielded completed orders also increased 29% to 4.5%. Online retail Black Friday sales reached $3 billion in total according to Retail Decisions, up on last year by a staggering 52%. Spending peaked at $183 million/hour between the hours of 12 and 1pm on Friday. Black Friday sales were up by 4% this year across the top 500 retail sites in the U.S., reports Hitwise, with Amazon.com again top of the heap receiving 13.55 % of U.S. visits. Activity on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter spiked across the holiday weekend as shoppers shared info on where to find the best bargains.
Facebook implemented a new dual class stock structure to insure that its founder Mark Zuckerberg retains tight control of the company, per the WSJ, kicking off rumors of an impending initial public offering. Facebook will convert existing holdings to Class B stock, which carry 10 times the voting power of Class A stock.
Next New Networks is hoping that YouTube’s new Autoshare feature, which allows users to instantly publish comments, likes or favorites to their Facebook, Twitter or Google Reader pages, will help it gather more video views. NNN’s Lady Gaga/Lord Gaga’s parody video amassed 200,000 views during its first 24-hours thanks to social sharing, cracking the site’s top 10 for the day.
NATPE is staging a free event on Wed. evening from 6-8 pm on Dec. 2 at the Writer’s Boot Camp offices at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica, gathering experts such as Jonathan Small, Editorial Director of Break Media and Brady Brim-DeForest, Co-Founder of Tubefilter, to discuss how to budget, produce and monetize projects on the web. Stickam is also streaming the event live.
Tremor Media ranked as the #1 video ad network with a potential reach of 75 million viewers, or 45% of the total viewing audience, according to ComScore. YuMe Video Network ranked second with a potential reach of 68 million viewers, followed by Broadband Enterprises (BBE) with 67 million viewers and SpotXchange with 59.4 million. The top video ad networks in terms of actual reach were BrightRoll (16.5% penetration), Tremor Media (15.5%) and BBE (13.6%). Lower video CPMs are helping to expand these video ad networks’ reach and encouraging more advertisers to dip their toes into the medium.

Encouraged by the growing mobile ad market, Microsoft introduced a new mobile ad program to distribute display ads across its own mobile sites. Marketplaces for Ringtones has already launched with additional ones forthcoming including Holiday Shopping, Mobile Games and Wallpapers. The company says campaign click-through rates (CTR) are currently running in excess of 20% on Marketplace for Ringtones – 5 times the average CTR for a mobile search campaign.
It costs a lot of dough to launch a 4G wireless network. Clearwire announced it has secured yet another round of debt financing of $920 million, bringing the total it has raised in the past few weeks (both equity and net debt) to $2.8 billion. The company said earlier this year that it needed an additional $2 to $2.3 billion to ensure that its network could reach a minimum of 120 million people by the end of 2010.
Though his private investment company Illyria, Lachlan Murdoch has sold half of his non-voting stake in News Corp. for $27.6 million to fund the purchase of a 50% stake in the Daily Mail General Trust’s DMG Radio network. Mr Murdoch is believed to be interested in pursuing interactive and online opportunities available to digital broadcasters.
Following a quiet launch in China, Apple released a version of the iPhone for the South Korean market over the weekend to some pent up demand and significantly more fanfare. (The AP is reporting 65,000 pre-orders.) The move has already spurred some smartphone discounting from Samsung and LG.

It is the company’s second app for the Android platform – the Ustream Android Broadcaster enables users to stream live from their phones via 3G or WiFi.
Popular TV listings iPhone app iTV released, then promptly yanked, an update showcasing new social features, including the ability to see what the iTV community is currently watching and the ability to share videos and program favorites on social networks with friends. The company says a few users were experiencing system errors but that a fix would be available soon.

Hulu racked up phenomenal gains in traffic and views during October, thanks to new fall programming and the addition of new partner ABC’s popular shows, according to comScore Video Metrix. Hulu served a total of 856 million video streams during the month – up from 583 million in September, while uniques spiked about 10% to 42.5 million. Minutes per viewer, an important engagement metric, were also up from 92 minutes last month to 123 minutes in Oct. It’s safe to say that the still controversial site has reached a crucial mass in terms of usage. Meanwhile demand for advertising on the portal appears healthy, with AdAge reporting that Hulu is close to selling out its inventory for Q4. The News Corp., NBCU, ABC joint venture has been able to command impressive CPMs and to monetize long tail, back catalogue content better than anyone online. (Where else would you look for Adam Sandler’s Thanksgiving Song?) However, the problem with online premium video continues to be a lack of inventory to sell; most hour-long programs include just 4-5 single commercial breaks. It will be interesting to see what direction Hulu heads in during the new year to squeeze more revenue out of the platform. No one remedy will likely fit the bill, so look for a combination of new ad products and subscription options.
