Cynopsis

11/28/05

Good morning.  It’s Thursday, November 24, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

The all-new ABC News Nightline debuts tonight, no longer with a single anchor, but with three:  Martin Bashir, Cynthia McFadden based in the new Times Square ABC News studio, and Terry Moran based in a new studio in Washington DC.  The live format will cover multiple topics over the 30 minutes, rather than just one.

ABC has announced this will be the last season for Alias, with its series finale scheduled for May 2006. Thus far this season, its fifth, the show has averaged 7.0 million viewers each week on Thursdays at 8p, down from last season’s 10.3 million average.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *Starting Monday, December 12 at 8p, Fox Reality Channel will air Long Way Round, the 20,000 mile motocycle trek of actors/friends Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman. While this series originally aired on Bravo, the presentation on Fox Reality Channel will include footage not seen before.  The trip takes McGregor and Boorman through the Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, China, Siberia, Alaska and Canada before arriving in the Untied States.  During their journey, they run into a variety of cultural and language barriers while they work to survive off the land, as well as take part in a variety of indigenous activities.

Sony Pictures Television has cleared its newest judge series in 90% of the country, preparing for its Fall 2006 launch.  Judge Maria Lopez has now been cleared in 45 of the top 50 markets, including WPIX/NY, KTLA/LA, WCIU/Chicago, WBDC/Washington, WBZ and WSBK/Boston, KBHK and KPIX/San Francisco, KASW and KTVK/Phoenix, KCPQ and KTWB/Seattle, KMWB/Minneapolis, KSWB/San Diego, among the many others.

Noriyuki Morita, better known to audiences as Pat Morita, passed away at the age of 73.  Morita is perhaps best known for his role as Mr. Kesuke Miyagi in the film series The Karate Kid, playing opposite Ralph Machio.  Morita’s career also included his supporting role on the TV series Happy Days, as well as appearing in The Odd Couple and Green Acres, and eventually his own TV series, Mr. T and Tina.  On the movie side and in addition to The Karate Kid, Morita appeared in several films including Honeymoon in Vegas, Spy Hard, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, The Center of the World and Mulan.  Morita also starred in Nickelodeon’s live-action series The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo.

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *ABC has a new drama project in development called Napoleon (working title), produced by Q Media Partners and Touchstone Television.  It’s a police drama based on the life and career of San Francisco’s first African-American homicide detective, Napoleon Hendrix.  The project will be written by Jeb Stuart, who will also exec produce with Matt Gross.  In a holding deal to play the title role is Michael Clark Duncan.

CBS’ Cold Case has added Tracie Thoms to the cast as regular Kat Miller, a street-wise young narcotics detective who becomes a member of the Philadelphia homicide squad after assisting in solving an old case from 1973.  Thoms’ first episode aired last night.

NBC has picked up a new comedy project from Happy Madison Prods and Sony Pictures TV, based on the life and times of stand up comic John Caparulo.  Caparulo grew up in a small town in Ohio, and this project picks up with his returning home after college, rather than going on to do all the great things expected of him, says Variety.

NBC has also ordered a script of a project from Al Roker Prods and NBC Universal, based loosely on Roker’s life as a dad and a weather forecaster. According to Hollywood Reporter, the working title is Meet the Rokers. Ralph Farquhar will exec produce.

Also from HR, ABC has ordered a script starring David Arquette as a private investigator in a small town. The untitled project was developed by Arquette and Courteney Cox.  Jeremy Stevens is on board to write the pilot as well as co-exec produce along with Arquette and Cox.

NBC‘s new drama pilot Kidnapped has cast three, with two others currently in negotiations.  Mykelti Williamson (you remember him as Bubba in Forrest Gump) has been signed along with Carmen Ejogo and  Boris McGiver, while Linus Roache and Delroy Lindo are still in talks.  The project from 25C Prods, NBC Universal Television and Sony Pictures TV,  is the unfolding of the kidnapping of the teenage son of a wealthy NYC businessman, and the subsequent investigation.

NBC pilot project Heist from Sony Pictures TV, Hypnotic and NBC Universal, has added three to the cast: Steve Harris, Michelle Hicks and Billy Gardell.  These three join Dougray Scott who will play the lead role. Heist is an ensemble project that follows the process of planning and executing three simultaneous jewelry store robberies, over the course of a single season.

The WB is looking at a project from Tollin-Robbins Prods and writer Harley Peyton called City of Gold, an adventure drama. Set in the Amazon, the story revolves around a father/son archeological team, per Variety.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *Neil J. Weiner has been named Director/Business Development for Numerique-USA, with offices in Burbank. Neil will focus on the growth within the existing Numerique services and on creating new revenue streams.

1929: United States Admiral Richard Bryd led the first flight over the South Pole.  In his plane the Floyd Bennett, Bryd embarked from Little America in the Bay of Whales at 3:29 on this day with the goal of reaching the Pole.  Late that night, the Floyd Bennett achieved this mission, flying directly over the Pole.  Bryd checked his navigational instruments to confirm his location, and dropped an American flag below as he was certain he had reached the South Pole.  He returned to Little America that night, with photographs and amazing stories of his view of this Southernmost earthly land.
