Cynopsis: Kids!

11/27/06

Good morning. It’s Monday, November  27, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Turner Broadcasting System Europe Ltd will launch Cartoon Network and Turner Classic Movies channels in Germany on December 5, 2006.  Both channels will be available 24/7 and feature dubbed programming.  In the German market Cartoon Network and TCM can be seen in via the ‘tividi HOME‘ and ‘tividi FAMILY‘ on ish and iesy, as well as the KOMPLET arena plus the tividi’ satellite platform tividi Sat and through Eutelsat KabelKiosk’s ‘tividi FAMILY‘ entertainment package. The Cartoon Network program can also be received through IPTV with Alice homeTV.  Additional platform partners are to be announced soon.  Turner launched Boomerang channel in Germany this past June 2006.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Sci Fi Channel and Robert Halmi Sr.’s RHI Ent. have joined together to produce, Tin Man (working title), a 6hr miniseries that will tell a sci-fi incarnation of L. Frank Baum’s classic story The Wizard of Oz.  Currently in the casting phase, the miniseries is set to begin production in Vancouver at the top of 2007 and scheduled to air in December of next year.  Tin Man is penned by Steven Long Mitchell and Craig Van Sickle, the guys who created The Pretender TV series, and revolves around DG, a young adult who finds herself propelled from her routine life into The Outer Zone, read: The O.Z., where she makes her way through a series of adventures as she … well you know the story. Robert Halmi Sr. and Jr. will serve as Executive Producers on the series, as well Mitchell and Van Sickle.  Previously the Sci Fi and RHI partnership produced the multipart series Legend of Earthsea, and the two entities recently inked a deal under which RHI will produce 10 TV movies for the network next year.

If you missed the Spider-Man 3 movie clips, which ran on Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, during the broadcast of Spider-Man 2 on Fox, you can find them online now at http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/spiderman3/site/ .  Sam Raimi returns to direct this third installment of the live-action Spider-Man movie franchise from a screenplay by Alvin Sargent.  Slated for release May 3, 2007, Spider-Man 3 once again stars Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, J.K. Simmons, Joe Manganiello, Bill Nunn and Cliff Robertson and Rosemary Harris amongst others.

And speaking of Sam Raimi … Last week Lord of the Rings fan site theonering.net reports Peter Jackson, who directed the Lord of the Rings trilogy, told the site that New Line Cinema would be moving ahead with its movie The Hobbit and another Lord of The Rings prequel, but without Jackson and his producing partner Fran Walsh.  Jackson is in the midst of a lawsuit against New Line over earnings from The Fellowship of the Ring.  So, here is where the Raimi part comes in.  Last night the fan site reported on a rumor that New Line had offered Raimi to direct The Hobbit.  But really, having directed his own trilogy (so far it’s a trilogy anyhow), would Raimi really consider taking on a movie universe created by another director?  Raise your hand if you think New Line, MGM, Jackson and Walsh will still be able to figure it all out?

Color Chips, an India based animation studio, has entered into a deal with Australia’s Albert Tross Productions.  Under the pact Color Chips will serve as the animation studio as well as providing creative services for the new animated series Tales of Tross (26 episodes).  Color Chips will also work on the development of interactive games and other types of licensed products.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The 3D animated series Iron Kid has premiered on Jetix in Spain, where it airs daily at 7:55a and on weekends at 9:25a. Iron Kid is co-produced by BRB Internacional, Screen 21, DesignStorm, Daiwon, Manga Entertainment and TVE.  The series follows the adventures of Marty, a boy who lives in the future and inadvertently finds the “Iron Fist,” which gives him mysterious powers and puts him at the head of a century long battle between good and evil.  The series has already bowed on KBS (Korea) and Jetix (France).  The Iron Fist series website can be found at www.ironkid.tv .

Taffy Entertainment recently completed raft of deals for its animated series including: Fantastic Four series, based on the Marvel property, which was acquired by NTV7 (Malaysia) as well as TV12 (Singapore).  TV12 has picked up the rights to SamSam, a new 3D animated series based on a comic book and produced by Bayard Jeunesse Animation in HD, and ToddWorld.  The rights to SamSam has also been picked up by Yoyo channel (Taiwan) and C4U (Korea).  C4U also pre-bought the CGI animation series Dive Olly Dive! and in Indonesia PT Cintra has acquired all three seasons of Code Lyoko.  Additionally, a fourth season of Code Lyoko is currently under way.  Taffy also inked a co-production pact with Korean broadcaster EBS and France 5 for Lamimila, a new preschool series produced by MoonScoop and Characterplan.

Attention shoppers! Cynopsis has broadened its portfolio by teaming with CABLEready to launch a new subscriber-based website for programmers and producers alike: CableU . You’ll find it here: Cable U . It’s full of up-to-date proprietary research, analysis, strategic information and insights on 25 U.S. cable networks, and our directive is simple – help position programs and optimize opportunities in the U.S. cable television market. CableU has all the tools needed to develop and sell original productions to U.S. cable television and help you figure out what’s working on cable, the best way to program opposite your competition and provide insight into what is arguably the most competitive landscape in our industry.  We launch one week from today – check it out – take the Virtual Tour.  You won’t find this level of stuff anywhere else.

As promised, here is the remainder of MTV Networks International‘s global study findings. The Wellbeing Study took six months to complete and encompassed 5,200 interviews with K8-15 and A16-34 in 14 countries (Argentina, Brazil, China, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, South Africa, Sweden, the UK and the U.S).
Family and friends

  • Developed countries feel they are getting more support from friends than they are from families. Conversely, developing countries feel they are getting more support from family than from friends.
  • 79% of kids around the world consider their parents to be their best friends, with Indonesia (98%), Brazil (96%) and India (96%) in the lead, and Japan dragging the Global average down with only 38%.
  • Youth in developed countries seem to be sick of their parents, whereas youth in developing countries either want their parents to spend more time with them, or are much more open to the idea:
    • India (70%), Indonesia (40%), China and South Africa (37%), Brazil (33%), Argentina (28%) and Mexico (22%) topped the ranking, against only 2% in Japan, 8% in Germany and Denmark, and 9% in the UK and Sweden.
    • Developed countries feel they are getting more support from friends than they are from families. Conversely, developing countries feel they are getting more support from family than from friends
  • With the exception of Argentina and Mexico, youth in developing countries were twice as likely to want their parents as their best friends.
  • Having lots of friends matters the most to Argentinian and Brazilian K8-15, behind only China, and surprisingly not so much to Mexican kids, who are in the bottom two ahead of Sweden.

New technology

  • Digital technology and media is changing kids’ behavior.
    • Chinese K8-15 are almost twice as likely as kids in any another country to look at news online.
    • Chinese A16-34 have an average of 22 online friends, and 30% of them said they found it easier to maker friends online than in person.
    • 40% of Brazilian youth plan to meet more friends online in the future.
    • Youth in Germany, Japan and Sweden turn to the Internet more often than the TV to keep up with local news, although youth around the world places much more trust in the news they see on TV.

The Wellbeing Index
As part of the survey, MTVN developed the Wellbeing Index to compare the perceived wellbeing of A16-34 in different parts of the world. The index is based on the perceptions of young people themselves and how they feel about safety, where they fit in to their society and how they see their future.  The country where young people had the greatest perceived sense of wellbeing was India, followed by Sweden with the U.S. coming third.  Both qualitative and quantitative research analysis was gathered via questionnaires, online, telephone, face-to-face interviews and ethnographic immersions. MTVN commissioned Synovate YC to conduct the project globally.
