Good morning. It’s Monday, November 26, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Tomorrow begins the annual Jimmy V Week for Cancer Research on ESPN, marking the sixth consecutive year of the initiative, which has generated more than $5 million for The V Foundation for Cancer Research. In the 18 years since ESPN founded the foundation, the organization has raised over $100 million to fight the disease.
Jimmy V Week launches at 7p with a simulcast of former NC State coach Jim Valvano’s famed 1993 ESPYs speech across all ESPN domestic media networks including ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNEWS, ESPN Classic, ESPN3, ESPN Deportes, Longhorn Network and ESPN 3D. Highlights this year will include the Jimmy V Women’s and Men’s Basketball Classics Presented by Corona Extra on Monday, Dec. 3 and Tuesday, Dec. 4, as well as features, vignettes and PSAs across platforms; and social activation across ESPN and The V Foundation social platforms. Audiences are encouraged to fight cancer by calling 1-800-4-JIMMY-V, visiting jimmyv.org or texting JimmyV to #80888.
Cynopsis Sports spoke with Rosa Gatti, ESPN’s Senior Vice President, Communications Counsel and Corporate Outreach about the initiative, Valvano’s legacy and why sports fans lead the way to drive social change.
Gatti on how Valvano’s speech turned into a crusade: When that speech happened, our phones lit up and our operators were getting so many calls the next day looking for copies of it. That triggered a basketball game, the Jimmy V Basketball Classic. Then some years later, we added the women’s basketball classic. Our Executive Chairman George Bodenheimer then encouraged employees to come up with new ways to do more to promote the V Foundation. One of the employees suggested doing a week-long initiative and it became Jimmy V and now this is the sixth annual one. We now have employees across the company who have been meeting for months to plan what we will program, what stories to feature, how we will use social media, develop new ideas. Each of these employees works within their departments to help execute the plan.
On talent: There’s a lot of pre-planning of messaging. One key component for ESPN is working on messaging from the commentators. We really give them background on the event itself and some suggested thoughts but our commentators are so good that they then take some of these basic points and bring them to life by either remembering some story about Jim Valvano, or how cancer has impacted their lives. So we provide baseline messaging and talk points but then they add their own passion and enthusiasm to bring it to life and encourage people to donate.
On how the V Foundation has impacted lives: I have the honor of serving on the board and there are three important aspects to this foundation that make it so effective. First of all it is for all types of cancer. They continue to discover that these cancer situations cross over and that research in certain cancers will also be helpful in other cancers as well. Secondly, it is so efficiently run, and we have built up an endowment so that 100% of donations go directly to research. The third thing is that our scientific review committee is literally a dream team of doctors who determine where the grants go and I can vouch that the money gets to where we say it’s going.
On using sports to drive change: There is no more passionate group than sports fans and when sports fans come together, they can achieve great things. We see this demonstrated day in and day out through great teams and great players bringing everyone together for one cause. When we can tap that drive from both athletes and fans alike, you can make a huge impact on the community.
Let’s play catch up from Thanksgiving weekend.
The Dodgers are seemingly about to lock in their rights deals with FOX. Deadline reports that a 25-year deal worth $6-$7 billion is close to being finalized between the parties and the agreement would place the Dodgers on their own regional sports network in Southern California. The new deal-worth around $280 million per season- would be around seven times what FOX currently pays ($40 million).
ESPN announced on Wednesday that it had reached a 12-year agreement to carry the new college football playoff across ESPN platforms. The deal is estimated to be worth around $470 million a year and $5.64 billion for the length of the contract. With the deal signed, ESPN now boasts long-term agreements to broadcast all the games involved in the new postseason arrangement, including the Rose, Sugar and Orange bowls. ESPN would feature the games on ESPN, ESPN Radio, ESPN Mobile TV and via WatchESPN on computers, smartphones, tablets and Xbox LIVE. Additionally, ESPN would have the rights to distribute the matchups on ESPN 3D, ESPN Deportes and around the world via ESPN International.
The NHL officially scratched two more weeks of games from its schedule due to the lockout, announcing the cancellation of the 2012-13 regular-season schedule through December 14. In addition, the league scrapped the 2013 NHL All-Star Weekend, which was slated to run Jan. 26-27 in Columbus, Ohio. A total of 422 regular-season games, equating just over a third of the season, have now been called off.
With an overtime game in tow, CBS scored the highest-rated NFL matchup on Thanksgiving Day, reporting an average overnight household rating/share of 15.2/36, according to Nielsen. The marks the second highest-rated Thanksgiving Day game for the Network in the metered markets since CBS re-acquired NFL broadcast rights in 1998.
Notre Dame delivered a huge number for ABC on Saturday, with the university’s game against USC drawing a 10.3 in Nielsen’s overnight numbers. That is the highest regular season overnight rating on the network since 2006. Meanwhile, other college football action also performed, with Michigan/Ohio St. delivering a 6.3 and Florida/Florida St. earning a 5.6 for the day.
U.S. Soccer is bringing in a new women’s league slated to begin play in the spring of next year. The eight-team league will feature teams from Boston, Chicago, Kansas City, Western New York, New Jersey, Portland, Seattle and Washington, D.C. with U.S. Soccer set to play a major role in organizing and running the league in order to ensure a sustainable business model. The organization will also subsidize the salaries of up to 24 U.S. Women’s National Team players while the Canadian Soccer Association will do the same for up to 16 Canadian players and the Federation of Mexican Football will do the same for up to 12 Mexican players in the league.
College football conference championship games are now locked in for this week, led by Alabama and Georgia for the SEC title on CBS at 4p on Saturday with a probably birth into the BCS Championship game against Notre Dame on the line. The official Championships begin Friday at 7p with the MAC featuring Kent St and Northern Illinois on ESPN2. That night will also feature the Pac-12 Championship on FOX pitting UCLA at Stanford. On Saturday, Conference USA will determine its king on ESPN2, pitting Central Florida at Tulsa at noon. The ACC Champs will be determined at 7:45p on ESPN with Florida St. facing Georgia Tech. Finally, the Big Ten Championship will feature Nebraska and Wisconsin on FOX at 8p
ESPN’s College GameDay announced that it will broadcast from Atlanta next week for the SEC championship game between No. 3 Georgia and No. 2 Alabama.
NBA TV’s NBA Fan Night presented by Sprint telecast will feature the Dallas Mavericks visiting the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday, Nov. 27, at 7p. The broadcast was determined via fan voting on NBA.com, the NBA Facebook page, NBA TV’s Facebook page, Yahoo.com, NBA.com mobile web, mobile Game Time App and Twitter. Host Matt Winer and analysts Chris Webber and Greg Anthony will offer analysis during the AutoTrader.com Pregame Show at 6:30p.
