Cynopsis: Kids!

11/23/09

Good morning. It’s Monday, November 23, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Summit Entertainment‘s The Twilight Saga: New Moon took more than a bite out of the box office estimates, breaking the records along the way as the largest midnight movie open with an estimated $26.3 million and the biggest one-day gross with an estimated $73.7 million, per Box Office Mojo.  New Moon began its weekend journey opening Friday night at 12:01a, smashing the midnight open record earning $26.3 million at 3,514 movie theaters.  The previous midnight record holder was Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (7/15/09), which took in $22.2 million at 3,003.  New Moon then knocked The Dark Knight (7/18/08) out of the way to become the biggest one-day gross record holder with $73.7 million at 4,024 theaters (8,500 movie screens).  The Dark Knight had held the single day gross record with $67.2 million at 4,366 movie theaters (9,300 screens), and still reigns as the largest weekend (Friday-Sunday) ever with $158.4 million, followed by Spider-Man 3 (5/4/07) with $151.1 million and then New Moon with a weekend total of $140.7 million domestically.  Internationally, New Moon earned $118.1 million this weekend, for an estimated worldwide first weekend total of $258.8 million.  Twilight (11/28/08) earned $69.6 million in its first weekend.  As for reviews, fan reviews of course (do others actually matter?), it really mostly comes down to screams, sighs and swoons of excitement, love and a choice between team Edward or team Jacob. Which are you?  The bottom line is indeed the bottom line with repeat customers to the movie they are going and going.
