Cynopsis: Kids!
11/22/10

Good morning. It’s Monday, November 22, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Warner Bros. stirred the cauldron again with the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows  Part 1, the seventh title in the franchise, on Friday, November 19, which earned an estimated weekend worldwide box office total of $330.1 million.  In the US, the movie set new Harry Potter movie franchise records, earning the largest opening with $61 million on Friday, of which $24 million from the midnight screenings, and the biggest opening weekend for a Potter movie with an estimated $125.1 million from 4,125 locations.  The weekend box office tally puts Deathly Hallows Part 1 as the sixth biggest movie opening weekend behind The Dark Knight (7/18/2008), Spider-Man 3 (5/4/2007), The Twilight Saga: New Moon (11/20/2009), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (7/7/2006), and Iron Man 2 (5/7/2010), per Box Office Mojo.  Will Deathly Hallows Part 1 become the biggest grossing movie of 2010? Time will tell, domestically for 2010 Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 3 leads the way with $415 million.  Internationally, Deathly Hallows Part 1 took in $250 million in box office receipts setting records in its opening weekend.  In the UK the movie broke through several records including to become the biggest three day opening weekend with an estimated total of US$28 million, as well as earning the largest single day opening, Friday (US$9.5 million), and biggest Saturday (US$10.6 million).  Meanwhile, the movie also set franchise highs for the opening weekend in Australia with $25 million and in Russia with $12 million.  Additionally, in movie set new Imax records, earning $12.4 million in 239 locations in North America and $4.2 million on 101 screens internationally, for a worldwide Imax total box office take of $16.6 million from 340 screens.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Random House Children’s Books (RHCB) is to publish a Mortal Kiss book in the UK, based on the interactive virtual story the publisher created with Stardoll ( www.stardoll.com/en/mortalkiss ), the teen-targeted virtual social networking platform.  Both parties say the decision to publish a physical book is a direct result of the popularity and positive response to the story with Stardoll users.  Mortal Kiss was serialized worldwide via Stardoll over eight weeks leading up to Halloween.  Bantam Books, a Random House imprint, will publish the book on January 6, 2011.  Stardoll reports that its Mortal Kiss pages have received 13.9+ million page views, with the campaign page receiving 3.8+ million.  The Mortal Kiss Stardoll fan club has 51,788 members, versus 33,347 for the Harry Potter club.

TurnOut Ventures (TOV) appoints Click Licensing as the exclusive licensing agent for its Tuzki ( www.clubtuzki.com ) property, the popular internet and IM rabbit philosopher emoticon character, across great China, which includes China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau.  Click will manage all Tuzki product and promotional licensing, as well as premium and publishing development on behalf of TurnOut Ventures.  Click is already exploring opportunities to create Tuzki branded products across categories including consumer electronics, apparel, accessories, sporting goods, home furnishings, gifts and novelties.

Oceanhouse Media releases Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer digital book as a universal app ($2.99) for the iPhone/iPad/iTouch.  The digital Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer book includes background music and audio, enlarged artwork for each scene in the story, as well as audio clips from classic holiday TV special.
