Our long national nightmare is over; Arrested Development is back, thanks to Netflix. The company has signed a deal with Twentieth Century Fox Television and Imagine Entertainment to stream a new season exclusively to its subscribers beginning in 2013. “Netflix’s bold entrance into original programming presents an exciting new opportunity for our two companies,” said Peter Levinsohn, Fox Filmed Entertainment’s President of New Media & Digital Distribution, in a statement, “Bringing a classic show back to production on new episodes exclusively for Netflix customers is a game changer, and illustrates the potential the new digital landscape affords content providers like Twentieth Century Fox Television and Imagine.” The deal is another step in Netflix’s stated strategy to become an HBO-like exclusive pay-TV channel. It has already signed a deal to produce House of Cards, a new series from Kevin Spacey and David Fincher, for next year.
NASCAR.com teamed up with ESPN to stream driver Tony Stewart’s live in-car camera feed on Facebook during the Ford 400, the season’s final race, which aired yesterday. While watching Stewart attempt to win the league’s racing title both on ESPN and through the Facebook stream, fans were given the opportunity to chat with friends and other racing fans. Furthermore, NASCAR.com promoted several other viewing options for fans, including 10 interactive angles on its RaceBuddy platform, as well as the telecast of the race on ESPN, the WatchESPN mobile app and WatchESPN.com.
Kendra Wilkinson launched a new online interactive website this past weekend through EQAL, the media company that has been building online domains for noted celebrities and influencers, including most recently comic book legend Stan Lee. Wilkinson’s site, which will be updated daily, will feature exclusive content revolving around the reality TV star. To kick-off the launch, and coinciding with the season finale of her reality show on E!, Wilkinson hosted a live chat with her fans.
Where’s My Water? is a new mobile game from Disney that stars Swampy, an alligator who lives in a sewer. Priced at $0.99 and available on iOS devices, the app represents an unprecedented step by Disney to create and develop a new character and potentially multi-million dollar business property beginning with a mobile game, according to a report in Bloomberg Businessweek. “A new generation of Disney fans is growing up, and this is their main platform,” says Bart Decrem, Disney Mobile’s Senior Vice President and General Manager, “My gut feeling is, over the next few years, someone will create a game with a billion gamers on it. We want to be that company.” The app has been successful so far as it sits atop the Apple App Store paid apps chart, unseating Angry Birds in the process.
Synacor, a website designer and TV Everywhere services provider, has filed for a $75 million initial public offering. Charter Communications and CenturyLink are the company’s two biggest customers, says Multichannel News. In fact, they are responsible for nearly two-thirds of Synacor’s revenues from 2008 to 2010, according to its S-1 filing with the SEC. The TV Everywhere services provider also generates revenue through search and display ads on the websites of its customers. Synacor’s investors include Crystal Ventures, Intel Capital and Walden International. Underwriters on the IPO include Bank of America, Merrill Lynch and Citigroup.
Millennial Media is unveiling a new suite of mobile ad creative tools, called mmStudio. The offering includes Mobile Circular, which allows for advertising up to 20 products within one single creative; 360 degree view, a tool that allows customers to rotate the advertised product in any direction; “Smash It,” an interactive game unit designed to draw viral interest for the ad using the tool; and more. The mobile ad network is also simplifying the process of traditional ad creation by providing wireframes for advertisers to use when designing their ads. This will not only give them greater control over the design process, but will also make it easier to re-package existing ads for mobile. Millennial’s platform is also integrated with over 10 rich media vendors, giving advertisers the option to work with Millennial, do the design themselves or use their current creative partner.
Monetate, a provider of testing, targeting and personalization solutions for websites, has announced that it will be extending its cloud-based website optimization platform to support the Kindle Fire. The platform enables e-commerce marketers to segment the visitors who access their site from tablet devices and then deliver a personalized browsing experience in order to drive sales. Among the options Monetate offers for a customized tablet experience include delivering special messages and offers only for tablet users, larger navigation menus, alternate content for non-Flash enabled tablets, a more finger-friendly site experience by eliminating the mouse-over actions, and more.
The iPad is the most desired consumer electronic among kids between the ages of 6 and 12 for the upcoming holiday season, reports a recent Nielsen survey, which asked respondents to indicate their interest in buying a certain product within the next six months. 44% of kids want the iPad, which is in fact an increase from the 31% who indicated a desire for Apple’s tablet in 2010. And just so you don’t think the iPod Touch and iPhone are being forgotten, they round out the kids’ top three with 30% and 27% of kids in the same age group desiring them, respectively. For what it’s worth, kids over 13 also want the iPad (24%, jumping up from 18% in 2010). Really, people just want the iPad.
The Orange County Register has updated and rebranded its iPad app, now called OCRegister The Peel. The app is now iOS 5 compatible and provides users a collection of local OC-specific events, entertainment and breaking news through a magazine-style app. One feature per issue also seeks to take advantage of the interactive capabilities of the iPad by providing a multimedia-rich story for viewers. The app is available on a free-trial basis for a limited time in the Apple App Store, with plans to move the offering to a weekly or yearly subscription model once targeted subscriber numbers have been met.
Based on BBC’s popular CBeebies program for pre-school children, P2 Games has unveiled the Tinga Tinga Tales app, and is available immediately in the Apple App Store. The app allows kids to interact with the animal characters from the show and includes nine mini-games. Intended for kids between the ages of 3 and 6, the app can be purchased for 1.49 pounds in the UK.
Michael Bloom, Wenner Digital Media’s Chief Digital Officer, is leaving the company after six months on the job, reports AllThingsD. As he was the first chief digital officer at the publishing company, Bloom was responsible for the digital strategies for Rolling Stone, Us Weekly and Men’s Journal on the web, mobile and tablet platforms. No announcement has been made in regards to his replacement.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~
In the spirit of the upcoming holiday weekend, or should I say, Christmas-shopping battle royale, I present to you Gizmodo’s “Ultimate Black Friday Gadget Cheat Sheet.” The popular Gawker Media site has painstakingly put together a list of deals grouped by retailers, such as Best Buy, Costco, GameStop, RadioShack, Sears and more, as well as item category. Another feature on the site is “My Wishlist”; which is pretty simple, click on the “+” symbol next to an item you desire and add it to the list. Gizmodo will continue to populate their guide throughout the week as they discover more deals. And just so you know, the page is not compatible with Internet Explorer 6, 7 or 8. Besides that, have fun and don’t hurt anybody!
