Cynopsis: Kids!

11/20/06

Good morning. It’s Monday, November  20, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Stunned is a pretty good word for how the kids entertainment industry is responding to the UK media regulation service Ofcom, announcement that after a multi-year look at food advertising to younger kids it intends to ban ALL advertising of junk food to kids under the age of 16.  The Ofcom decision is part of its stance on the ongoing fight against childhood obesity issues in the UK.

Long lines, fights and sadly even a shooting in one state, lots of sales, trades and some even some playing added up to quite the weekend for video gamers with the release of Sony’s PlayStation 3 console on Friday, November 17 in North America and Europe and Nintendo’s Wii as the clock rounded midnight on Sunday here in the US.  While Sony released its PlayStation 3 first in Japan on November 11, Nintendo won’t release its Wii until next week in Japan on December 2 and in Europe on December 8.

In other console news … if you live in Europe, December 8 will also be a big day as Nintendo rolls out an MP3 accessory for its DS handheld game device.  This new accessory will allow Nintendo DS users in Europe to store upwards of 150 songs via a PC onto a 512 MB SD memory card,.  Like other MP3 players the DS version will also feature song information on its screen.  The Nintendo MP3 player cartridge is also compatible with the Game Boy Advance SP and Game Boy Micro.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Warner Bros. Pictures has scheduled the release of its family movie The Astronaut Farmer for February 23, 2007.  The Polis Brothers’ movie stars Billy Bob Thornton as Charles Farmer, an astronaut who is dropped from the NASA space program.  Farmer faces all sorts of challenges including foreclosure on his Texas farm, as he pours all of his money, time and energy, into building his own rocket in order to complete his dream of traveling in space.  As he works toward his launch date, Farmer goes head-to-head with everyone from his own town to various US governmental departments.  The movie also stars Virginia Madsen as Farmer’s wife, Bruce Dern as his father-in-law.   Michael Polish directs the movie from a screenplay he co-wrote with his brother Mark.  The movie has been rated G by the MPAA.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Cartoon Network has inked a first-look deal with animator/creator/executive producer Sam Register to develop programming for the network.  Register previously served as the network’s SVP/Development and it was during this time that he oversaw the development of properties including Ben 10, My Gym Partner is a Monkey, PPGZ as well as Star Wars: Clone Wars, Teen Titans, Justice League Unlimited, The Batman and others.  Register held several posts at Cartoon Network.  Prior to joining Cartoon Network Register served as Creative Director, Colossal Pictures.

The Gotham Group, an animation/family entertainment talent management/production company, has teamed up with Union Entertainment, a video game talent management/production firm, to work strategically in pooling their resources on multi-platform projects including video games, animated TV programming and feature films.  The two companies have worked together on a range of projects over the last three years.

Granada International has picked up the global sales distribution rights, excluding the US, of two new shows from Original Productions.

  • The Holiday Madness (1 x 50′) looks at the growing phenomenon of Christmas lights and the people who compete against their neighbors to create the most elaborate Christmas display in town.
  • Resolutionaries (3 x 50) explores the trauma, perseverance and inadvertent humor of taking on the world’s most popular (and most unfulfilled) self-improvement projects, with the three episodes tackling Quitting Smoking, Losing Weight and Getting Organised. Each of the participants is teamed with an expert coach who guides their progress and keeps them motivated through temptation, frustration and psychological barriers.

MARKETING/LICENSING
