Good morning. It’s Monday, November 19, 2007, and this is your first early morning.
France’s Gaumont film production/distribution/sales company is in exclusive discussions with Alphanim to acquire the children’s production/distribution house. No word yet on the negotiation timeline. The Paris-based Alphanim’s productions include Galactik Football, Robot Boy, and Hairy Scary. Italy’s De Agostini recently purchased Gaumont.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
With David Yates set to return to direct Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, he helmed this year’s HP and the Order of the Phoenix. The cast will include two noted actors Jim Broadbent who will play Horace Slughorn, the Potions Professor, while Helen McCrory takes on the role of Narcissa “Cissy” Malfoy, mother of Draco Malfoy, who is described as having a look on her face as if she there was something smelly under her nose. The cast will also feature a number of young newcomers. Additionally, Bruno Delbonnel comes to the Harry Potter movie, serving as Director of Photography.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Hollywood Goes Gaming, the next installment in Starz Entertainment’s Starz Inside monthly specials hosted by film critic Richard Roeper, will air November 26 at 9p on Starz. This special, while not specifically targeted to kids but will likely draw gamers of all ages, follows rapid rise in popularity of video games adapted into feature films, and of course vice-versa, the origin of video games, and the influence each medium has had on the other. The special includes Shia LaBeouf (Surf’s Up, Transformers), Michelle Rodriguez (Lost), Nolan Bushnell (creator Atari and Pong), director Paul WS Anderson (Resident Evil), director John Woo (founder Tiger Hill Entertainment) and director Clive Barker (Hellraiser), and looks at films including 300, Resident Evil, Lara Croft, among others. The next special in the series, Anime: Drawing a Revolution is set to premiere December 17 at 9p, and looks at its pioneers and creators, but the influences of Anime on Japanese culture, the world in general and Hollywood. The special will look specifically at films including Spirited Away, Ghost in the Shell, Princess Mononoke, Akira, The Matrix, and Transformers.
Roger Daltrey (yep, that one) returns as the voice of Argon the bus driver in Wheels on the Bus: Mango’s Big Dog Parade (33 min), the new title The Wheels on the Bus animated DVD series, which will be released on January 22, 2008. The DVD series aims to teach preschoolers early socialization skills through original songs composed by Laura Hall and lyricist Timothy Armstrong. The DVD also comes with a Parent’s Guide as well as a behind the scenes video, a lyric sheet and a short titled Behave Bernard. Produced by Our Happy Child Productions and distributed by PorchLight Home Entertainment.
Radio Disney will host the worldwide premiere of Disney Channel Holiday CD, on Saturday, November 24 at 7p. The newly released Walt Disney Record’s CD features a collection of holiday songs (original and classic) performed by Disney Channel stars including: Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree by Miley Cyrus as Hannah Montana; Girl of My Dreams by Jonas Brothers; This Christmastime by Corbin Bleu; and Best Time of the Year by Christy Carlson Romano.
kajeet is launching Feeds, an entertainment and information text messaging service for tweens, developed by Distributive Networks, a mobile content and technology company. kajeet Feed text alerts ($.10 per message) arrive daily on kid mobile phones, each of which can be saved on the phone or forwarded on to friends. Feed categories, so far, include Word of the Day, Horoscopes, Fortune Cookies, Sports Trivia, Animal Trivia, Girl Power, and Joke of the Day, and so on. Distributive Network is also managing Feed content delivery and subscriptions.
MARKETING/LICENSING
The Weinstein Company and Exodus Film Group have entered into a national promotional campaign with CKE Restaurants, parent company of Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s restaurants, to support the release of the CG animated movie Igor, which is slated for October 24, 2008. The Igor campaign is part of CKE’s Cool Kids Combos meal program and features four Igor premiums, in-store displays and an online component with Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s Cool Kids websites. Other partners signed on to promote Igor include Corgi International (master license for toys and collectables), Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing Division and IDW Publishing (comic book series). Simon & Schuster plans nine “Igor” books, which will be published under their Simon Scribbles and Simon Spotlight imprints.
Program Partners and Merv Griffin Entertainment have inked a licensing rights deal with Hasbro for the TV series, Merv Griffin’s Crosswords. Under the deal, Hasbro will develop at-home games based on Crosswords, which are slated to be available at retail from early 2008. The deal was brokered by the William Morris Agency.

Scholastic Media welcomes one and ups another.
- Daisy Kline is named Director/Marketing & Brand Management. Kline, who will report to Leslye Schaefer SVP/Marketing and Consumer Products, will oversee all marketing initiatives and brand strategies for Scholastic Media’s properties (e.g. Clifford The Big Red Dog, Goosebumps, I Spy, Dragon etc.) for the multimedia and consumer products arena. Kline was most recently Director/Marketing, Random House Children’s Books.
- Rachel Bader moves up to Director/Consumer Products. She is responsible for selling and managing the extension of Scholastic Media properties, trademarks, and brands, into the manufacturing, licensing and promotion communities. Bader, who had been Manger/Consumer Products, will report to VP Gary Hymowitz.
