Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, November 15, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Activition Blizzard‘s popular first person shooting game Call of Duty: Black Ops obliterated entertainment records last week, selling 5.6 million resulting in $360 million in its first 24 hours on sale. Activision estimates this is up from 4.7 million units and $310 million for last year’s release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.  Sure the game is carries and ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board) rating of Mature, but, based on the number of parents standing in line with their kids to purchase Black Ops at the Game Stop I visited on release day (November 9), kids were major contributors to the sales success of the new title.

More music for Disney Channel, which is developing a new original music/comedy series, a la Glee, per Deadline.  Not apparently an extension of its High School Musical franchise, the new single camera series is operating on the working title Madison High and will feature tweens and teens telling their stories through song and dance as part of the school’s extended theater program.  Lester Lewis (The Office, Jonas L.A.) is writing the series, which he’ll Executive Produce with Director Paul Hoen (Camp Rock 2, Jonas, Jump In, The Troop, South of Nowhere among others).  Hoen will direct the pilot if it is given the go ahead.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Viacom unveiled a list of movie titles at the end of last week that will be released sometime after fall 2011, per THR.  Among the titles confirmed for release are a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles feature film, which as previously reported is being developed by Michael Bay and his Platinum Dunes with writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway.  Nickelodeon acquired the property in October 2009 for about $60 million.  Some of the other movies confirmed, though not specifically targeted to kids, include a Zoolander sequel that will be written and directed by Justin Theroux, a second G.I. Joe movie to be penned by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and already announced Star Trek 2, which will release June 29, 2012, with script by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof, J.J. Abrams is producing but he has not yet committed to directing again.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney Channel and producers of its live-action series Sonny with a Chance will re-focus the series for at least the start of the upcoming new season, while Sonny’s star Demi Lovato addresses her personal issues, per Variety.  Slated to head back into production on a third season this January 2011, the Sonny with a Chance creative team will re-center the series on the ‘show within a show’, So Random!, a sketch/music-variety show.  So Random! will feature a range of guest stars, sketches and musical performances and short videos.  So Random! has already proven to popular enough to support two full-length episodes, the first of which aired last month and the other to air later this month.  Sonny with a Chance is executive produced by Brian Robbins, Sharla Sumpter Bridgett, Michael Feldman and Steve Marmel.

In Canada, Corus Entertainment‘s kid-targeted networks will feature a range of special holiday programming and a preview this December 2010.

  • YTV will host the Canadian premieres this December of DreamWorks Animation‘s holiday specials Kung Fu Panda Holiday (December 15, 7p) and Merry Madagascar (December 16, 7p), as well as the network’s original production Holly Jolly Special (December 15, 7:30p).  The month will also feature YTV’s premieres of other holiday specials including: The Dog Who Saved Christmas Vacation; Home Alone 2: Lost on New York, The Penguins of Madagascar: The All Nighter Before Christmas; This Christmas; Sidekick: Beneath the Missile-Toe; Pearlie: Jingle Bell Park.  Additionally, other classic holiday specials airing next month include: Blast From Christmas Past; A Charlie Brown Christmas; A Garfield Christmas Special; It’s Christmas Time Charlie Brown; A Flintstone Family Christmas; ‘Tis the Season to be Smurfy; He-Man and She-Ra Christmas Special; and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.
  • Nickelodeon (Canada) will feature a range of premiere holiday-themed episodes during the network’s free preview beginning Wednesday, December 15, 2010 through Monday, January 31, 2011.  The network will offer premieres of holiday-themed episodes including Back at the Barnyard (December 15, 8p), True Jackson, VP (December 16, 8p), and The Troop (December 17, 8p), as well as existing holiday specials including As Told By Ginger Hannukah, Rugrats Chanukah, and Rugrats Kwanzaa, to name a few.  Nick will also offer daily back-to-back episodes of its new and classic series such as Drake & Josh, True Jackson, VP, and The Troop.  Premiering on Nickelodeon in Canada this January 2011 are the network’s two new series T.U.F.F. Puppy and Planet Sheen.
  • Treehouse will offer premieres of holiday-themed episodes of preschool series this December including: two Olivia holiday episodes; Max & Ruby; Team Umizoomi; and Curious George.

Dailymotion ( www.dailymotion.com ) and Crunchyroll ( www.crunchyroll.com ), an online streaming source for anime and Asian dramas, have partnered to feature a selection of Crunchyroll’s catalog to fans via Dailymotion globally.  Crunchyroll simulcast titles will be available via Dailymotion one week after they premiere in Japan, which have been made available through the Crunchyroll Anime Membership.  Some of the titles from Crunchyroll’s library of licensed content, across a range of demos, which will be available include anime series Naruto Shippuden, Shugo Chara!, Eyeshield 21, Reborn!, Bleach and Gintama.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Electronic Arts (EA) and Lucasfilm expand their global publishing deal for the upcoming massively multiplayer online videogame (MMORPG) Star Wars®: The Old Republic ( http://starwarstheoldrepublic.com ), which is set to launch worldwide in 2011.  With this new agreement, certain publishing, marketing and distribution responsibilities previously designated to LucasArts will shift to fall under EA, so that all publishing, marketing and distribution responsibilities can be centralized for efficiency.  Lucasfilm will continue as a partner, collaborating on design and marketing, and as a licensor of the property.  Star Wars: The Old Republic is designed to redefine the MMO category by introducing BioWare‘s storytelling and emotional human performances to the genre.  Financial terms were not disclosed.

Kim Palmer is named National Sales Manager, Douglas Company.  Based in New Hampshire, Douglas Company is a maker of plush toys, accessories and home decor, which are available in the US, Canada and Europe.

Indie creative agency David&Goliath makes two new leadership appointments in its LA office, with Brain Dunbar named Managing Partner, Director/Client Services and Claudia Caplan as CMO.  Dunbar will lead the Kia Motors business, the agency’s largest client, as well as direct the client services department and partner with Caplan on business development.  A 25-year industry veteran, Dunbar most recently was President of an agency he started helped start.  He was previously with Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, where he served as Group Account Director and Associate Partner.  Prior to that he spent a decade with DDB.  Caplan has worked on a range of accounts for agencies including Dailey & Associates, Wells, Rich, Greene and Mendelsohn Zien.  She eventually served as CMO Mendelsohn Zien, and prior to that as VP/Brand Marketing, Earthlink.
