Dozens of international business associations and companies are joining a coalition led by the Association of National Advertisers (ANA) to prevent a domain expansion program backed by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), reports MediaPost. Under ICANN’s proposal, it would be possible to submit an application to claim ownership of almost any word as an internet top-level domain, aka everything to the right of the dot (such as .org or .com). The report indicates that in the first year of ICANN’s plan, hundreds of new domains could be registered, with thousands in the future, which would force a business of any size to purchase domains in order to protect their brands. Or, as ANA president Bob Liodice argues, would force all sorts of small, large, public, private and non-profit organizations to spend a lot of money that could be invested in other areas such as product improvements and job creation. Among the notable businesses that have joined the coalition to prevent the expansion program from moving forward include American Express, Coca-Cola, HP and Samsung.


In conjunction with the upcoming Blu-ray release of the last Harry Potter film, Warner Bros. has updated and enhanced its UltraViolet streaming service that accompanies physical copies of film releases, reports CNET. Users who buy a film will now be able to also download a digital copy to the iPhone or iPad from the Flixster app, which WB bought last spring. Previously, users could only stream the film through the cloud, but not download an actual copy, and therefore couldn’t watch a film offline. The service received sharp criticisms for this inability. Ultraviolet is Hollywood’s latest attempt to entice people to buy discs instead of using a renting service and has the backing of five of the six major studios (Disney is the holdout).

With the Kindle Fire set to ship next week, Amazon has been stockpiling as many big-name apps as possible. The latest to come on board is Hulu Plus, which will be offered on the tablet for $7.99 a month. However, it should be noted that the Fire also comes bundled with Amazon’s own streaming service, Amazon Prime, which is not only a direct competitor to Hulu but will also be offered for free on the tablet for the first month.

Lionsgate UK has signed a licensing agreement with Netflix that will offer the streaming service’s future U.K. subscribers access to the studio’s library. Netflix has plans to expand to the U.K. and Ireland in the first quarter of 2012. Not to be done, Lionsgate also confirmed that it will be making 11 movies available for rent on Facebook, according to Home Media Magazine. Among the films included in this deal are The Lincoln Lawyer, Rambo and Saw.

Going live this past Friday, November 11, ClevverTeVe , from Clevver Media, has become the first channel to launch under YouTube’s $100 million original content programming initiative. The Spanish-language channel will bring Hollywood news and fashion tips to Hispanic audiences. It is one of three channels that Clevver Media will provide for YouTube, with the other two set to premiere this coming winter.


Kleiner Perkins has announced that Google will join the venture firm’s sFund initiative as a strategic partner. According to a report from TechCrunch, the fund is allocated towards investing in social startups in all types of industries, including consumer, enterprise, health and mobile. The $250 million fund’s list of partners already includes Zynga, Comcast, Allen & Co., Liberty Media, Amazon and Facebook, and now will welcome the world’s premier online search giant. Usually making investments within the $100,000 to $100 million range, the fund’s notable investments to-date include Klout, Spotify, Rent the Runway, Flipboard and Square.


Katango has been acquired by Google and will join the team at Google+. The start-up specializes in technology that lets users selectively share according to how they have sorted their friends and online contacts. However, unlike Google+’s own Circles service, Katango is different in the sense that its technology will analyze and group your friends based on your social tendencies and history, automatically.


Viewers watched videos on tablets almost 30% longer than when watching on a desktop in the third quarter of 2011, finds the VideoMind Video Index report conducted by Ooyala, an online video management and monetization company. In fact, tablet video viewers were more than twice as likely to watch an entire video when compared to viewers watching on a desktop. Other interesting findings from this study include:

  • The iPad was in full control of the tablet market, accounting for 97% of total hours of videos played on such devices.
  • Viewers were slightly more likely to finish watching a video on an iPad than on an Android tablet device.
  • Videos of 10 minutes or longer accounted for 56% of the time played on tablets and 84% on connected TVs and gaming consoles.

The latest version of comScore‘s monthly qSearch analysis of the U.S. search market shows that Google continues to dominate as it accrued a market share of 65.6% for “Explicit Core Searches” in the month of October. Explicit Core Searches are all searches conducted by a user which are unaffected by browsing behavior, meaning they are using a search engine in the literal sense; with the intent to retrieve search results. Yahoo and Microsoft followed behind at numbers two and three with a search market share of 15.2% and 14.8% respectively. Ask Network (2.9%) and AOL (1.5%) brought up the rear. For what it’s worth, Google also dominated the standard “Core Search” market with a share of 66.2% in October.


Starz Digital Media and Ludorum have announced the availability of Chuggington: Terrific Trainee! in the Apple App Store. The app is based on Ludorum’s critically-acclaimed kids TV series Chuggington, which is a part of the Disney Junior programming block designed for young kids between the ages of 2 and 7 on the Disney Channel. The app, which includes 16 mini-games and missions starring the characters from the TV show, is priced at $1.99.

Moshi Monsters, the online social site for kids between the ages of 6 and 12 that combines games, puzzles, missions and adoptable pet monsters into a safe social networking environment, is branching out into the video game console business. The company has launched a game for the Nintendo DS player in the U.K. market. Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo, available for 29.99 pounds, offers fans new content, mini-games, collectible characters and playable locations.


Scott Crystal is the new President of The Daily Meal. In his new role, Crystal will oversee all of the sales and business efforts for the popular food website. Prior to joining The Daily Meal, Crystal was the President, CEO and Publisher at TV Guide Publishing, and has worked in a similar executive capacity for other publishing brands including National Geographic Society and Ziff Davis Consumer Magazines., the web video distributor that focuses on helping small-sized web publishers distribute and generate ad revenue for their shows online, is actively looking for a new CEO, says AllThingsD. Dina Kaplan, one of the company’s co-founders is preparing to leave the company, while the current CEO, Mike Hudack, has been on medical leave.


The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, opened by Amy Poehler, Matt Besser, Matt Walsh and Ian Roberts, with locations in New York and LA, is one of the best places in the country to see live comedy. Featuring a variety of styles including sketch, improv and stand-up, the UCB Theatre has seen many rising stars and comedy veterans walk through its doors; such as Donald Glover from Community, Aziz Ansari and Aubrey Plaza from Parks & Recreation, too many people to list from 30 Rock and SNL and pretty much everyone who writes for any of the late night institutions housed in New York and LA. UCB also has an online arm at that is similar in spirit to College Humor and other online humor sites. It features a mix of original content shot for the site and recordings of hilarious live events that have taken place at one of the theatres. So do check it out, and if you find yourself in either New York or LA, do make a point to go see a show (they are very inexpensive). Who knows, you might end up witnessing the early stages of one of the next big names in comedy.
