Cynopsis: Kids!
11/12/12

Good morning. It’s Monday, November 12, 2012, and this is your first early morning briefing.

The BBC‘s preschool channel CBeebies gives the go ahead on the new live-action drama Katie Morag (26×14). Based on the books by author/illustrator Mairi Hedderwick, Katie Morag will be produced by Scotland-based indie Move On Up. The series follows Katie Morag, a small red-headed girl who lives with her family on the magical Scottish Island of Struay, while she experiences the every day themes of childhood such as jealousy, bravery and rivalry. The series also features Katie’s annoying little brother, busy shopkeeper parents, perfect best friend and grandmothers, who appear to know everything about everything and who frequently help Katie out a bind using humor. Katie Morag will be shot on location in the Scottish Highlands. Katie Morag will be executive produced by Lindy Cameron for Move on Up and Sara Harkins and Michael Towner for CBeebies. The series has received support from BBC Scotland and Creative Scotland and is slated to debut on CBeebies at the end of 2013.

Hulu targets kids and families with the debut of its new Hulu Kids (www.hulu.com/kids) section for Hulu Plus subscribers. At launch, the Hulu Kids section features 43 shows – including commercial-free series episodes from Nickelodeon as well as series from PBS and Lionsgate. Hulu Plus subscribers logged in on Hulu.com can click on Hulu Kids and the Shows You Watch section for where they can browse through categories like Dino Time, featuring episodes of Barney, Dinosaur Train, and Cartoon Favorites for series such as SpongeBob SquarePants, Arthur, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Thomas & Friends, Martha Speaks, Robot and Monster and Caillou, among others. Users can also select by channel, by age (K2-4, K5-7, K8-10), or on a grid format. Live action series offered include iCarly, Victorious, Biz Kids, and House of Anubis, to name a few. Hulu Kids launches simultaneous to new updates for the PlayStation 3. Hulu Kids comes on the heels of Netflix announcing its expansion of its Just For Kids section to the iPad last month.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

A screenplay for the new Star Wars movie, Star Wars: Episode VII, is in the works. Following up on rumors, StarWars.com confirms that the new adventure is being penned by screenwriter Michael Arndt, who wrote Toy Story 3, Little Miss Sunshine and the upcoming movies Oblivion, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Phineas and Ferb. According to the report, newly named Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and George Lucas have begun story meetings with Arndt. Disney, which acquired Lucasfilm last month for $4 billion, will release Star Wars: Episode VII in 2015. The rumor mill also has the new movie featuring appearances by Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia – that all remains rumor.

Following the successful release of the animated feature film Hotel Transylvania (9/28/2012), Sony Pictures Animation is working on a sequel, Hotel Transylvania 2 that is set for release on September 25, 2015, per THR. No word yet on who will direct, as director Genndy Tartakovsky (Star Wars: Clone Wars, Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack), who directed the first movie, is already at work on Sony Picture Animation’s Popeye, which will release September 26, 2014. In its opening weekend Hotel Transylvania became the top grossing movie for a September with $42.5 million. To date, Hotel Transylvania has grossed $270.4 million worldwide, $140.9 million of which in domestic box office receipts, according to Box Office Mojo.
