Cynopsis: Sports
11.11.13

Good morning. It’s Monday, November 11, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

As the country celebrates U.S. servicemen and women for Veterans Day, Sportsman Channel is openly embracing military personnel and their families as an instrumental pillar of its present and future. Last week, the network announced that its Sportsman Channel’s Salute to Service initiative would offer a military-themed all-day programming schedule today from noon to 7p that will see every program feature a connection to the military. Hosted by Larry Vickers, Sportsman Channel’s Veterans Day Salute will also see “soldier salutes” – courtesy of the Department of Defense  from active military serving throughout the world. In addition, the channel announced that Gary Sinise has signed on to become the official spokesman for Sportsman Channel’s Salute to Service initiative.

Cynopsis Sports spoke with Gavin Harvey, CEO of Sportsman Channel, about the network’s initiative and its biggest accomplishments in 2013.

Harvey on the current focus of Sportsman Channel: Our DNA is grounded in this multi-platform enterprise that was put together that consists of the channel, the magazine group, the digital group. It’s a huge outdoor media platform so we continue to find ways to surround the lifestyle in a 360 way. That’s basically our mission, our mantra. We like the position that we’re in and the growth that we’ve achieved this year and the future is looking great. We’ve got a lot of great stuff going on.

On the biggest accomplishment in 2013: Big for us this year was the number of blue chip sponsors that we’ve brought in. Despite continuing to be an emerging, mid-size network, we have also innovated on the programming side and redefined what the outdoor television genre is all about. From example, we now have the first-ever live, daily news/talk show in the category ever in Cam & Co. When you can add a show like that to your network, it does transformative things, helping your ability to promote, to be topical, to be fresh every day, to brand the network and that has been a great innovation for us.

On the link with the military: We’ve had an internal program, called Salute to Service that helps us organize what we are trying to do in the military media genre. You can go back for years and see that our producers have been very aggressive in featuring disabled veterans, returning veterans, veterans with PTSD in the shows because going back to the water and the mountains is a great restorative experience for them. In addition, this is something that most of them grew up doing. The nexus between outdoor life and military life is very strong and our audience has great respect for them. So we started to introduce some new things. For Memorial Day, our audience celebrates these holidays for what they really are. It is about loss, it is about sacrifice and remembering what this is really all about. So we programmed with military themed shows and had a crawl with dedications that were posted all day long. It was a huge hit. So for July 4th, we were looking at how we could take this further, so we posted video vignettes of soldiers. That’s all that these folks want and we decided to make it a tentpole that isn’t just about the holidays.

On the future of the initiative: We are going to work with the foundations, the Defense Department, the USO and other to do what we can do to be a platform to talk about not just the challenges that people face and the stories that they have, but also opportunities that may be out there for both returning servicemen and women as well as for people like us who don’t serve but want to help. We are just getting started and are very happy to have Gary Sinise agree to work with us on this on the holiday side. If you go to his website, you will see what a selfless contribution to be involved and to be someone who simply helps. We are going to try to be a place that can help him reach a whole lot more people.

A US District judge ruled that college athletes may be eligible for a cut of TV dollars, allowing a group of players to sue the NCAA in a class action suit designed to change regulations that prevent athletes from earning money on their images. However, the judge also decided that athletes were ineligible to go after monetary damages for financial losses they suffered in the past, according to Reuters. The case was filed in 2009 and looks to create a fund where broadcasting and videogame revenue would go to the athletes, although players would not get a cut while they were actively playing, online when they were no longer NCAA-eligible.

Comcast launched Xfinity Sportstactular today in a play to promote its TV Everywhere capabilities. The week-long stunt runs through Nov. 17 and is designed to showcase the live sports programming being offered both in and out of the home. That game bumped heads with NFL Network’s TNF game (which drew a 5.4 score) as well as the NBA on TNT and Oklahoma/Baylor on FOX Sports 1.

Speaking of ratings, ESPN’s first Wednesday NBA doubleheader of the season averaged 2,048,000 viewers for a 72% uptick compared to the first Wednesday doubleheader last season, according to Nielsen. In addition, Wednesday’s doubleheader averaged a 1.4 U.S. household rating, up 56% from last year.

NBA TV announced that its upcoming NBA Fan Night presented by Sprint will feature the Detroit Pistons visiting the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 10:30p. Fan voting for the next NBA Fan Night presented by Sprint telecast stats tomorrow at 8a.

FOX Sports made its college football selections for games on Nov. 16, revealing that the Baylor/Texas Tech matchup will run in prime time on FOX at 7p. FOX will carry another Big 12 game that day with Oklahoma State/Texas at 3:30p. FOX Sports 1 will carry two games, with Iowa State/Oklahoma at noon and Utah/Oregon at 4p.

CBS Sports opted for Georgia/Auburn for its SEC on CBS football game on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 3:30p. Verne Lundquist, Gary Danielson and reporter Tracy Wolfson call the contest from Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Ala.

Finally, ESPN announced that its SEC game for Nov 16 will feature Florida/South Carolina at 7p on ESPN2 & Alabama/Mississippi St at 7:45p on ESPN. Meanwhile, ABC will carry Stanford/USC at 5p.

MLB Network will carry all the news from the BBWAA Awards Week starting today and running through Thursday. The week will see BBWAA secretary-treasurer Jack O’Connell announcing the award winners during one-hour programs at 6p beginning with the Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year awards, and followed by the Manager of the Year on Tuesday, Cy Young on Wednesday, and MVP on Thursday. The programs will be hosted by Greg Amsinger.

International boxing rights distributor and sports marketing firm Octapixx LIVE announced a long-term distribution agreement with Golden Gloves Promotions to market and distribute Golden Gloves boxing events to broadcasters around the world. The relationship kicked off yesterday with the Golden Gloves’ Fighting Force event.
