Cynopsis: Kids!

5/07/07

Good morning. It’s Monday, May 7, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing, coming to you from the Cable Show 2007 in Las Vegas.

Sony’s Spider-Man 3 spun at light-speed in its opening weekend across both traditional movie theaters as well as IMAX theaters earning $148 million domestically, toppling the previous record holder Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (July 7, 2006), which took in $135.6 million in its first weekend.  Spidey 3 opened in a record 4,252 theaters domestically, taking in an average of $34,807 per theater versus Pirates of the Caribbean 2 that opened in 4,133 with an average of $4,133 per theater.  Spidey 3 also broke the opening day single day box office take with an estimated $59.3 million on Friday, May 4, 2007, surpassing Dead Man’s Chest which had previously held the position with $55.8 million.  Additionally, this weekend Spidey 3 earned the biggest ever box office receipts for a Saturday with an estimated $110.3 million and Sunday with an estimated $37.7 million, ahead of Shrek 2 (2004) with $44.8 million and Dead Man’s Chest $35.4 million, respectively.  Add Spidey 3’s domestic take to its international receipts and the movie so far has earned an estimated total of $375.0 million worldwide.  One thing to keep in mind Spidey 3 has 18 more days in theaters before its biggest likely competitor Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End opens on May 25, 2007.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Marvel Studios has turned to actress Liv Tyler to take on the role of Betty Ross in its movie The Incredible Hulk.  Ross, also a scientist, is the long-time love interest of Dr. Bruce Banner/the Hulk, who as we already know will be played by Edward Norton.  Set to being production this summer in Toronto, the movie is being directed by Louis Leterrier, distributed by Universal and is slated to open June 13, 2008.

CBBC has inked a deal for the UK rights for a new animated Wolverine TV series, which is based on Marvel’s X-Men character.  Initially announced in fall 2005, when Marvel Entertainment sealed a deal with India animation studio, First Serve Toonz, the Wolverine series (title TBD) will be comprised of 26×30′ episodes and will be distributed by Marvel in the US and Liberation Entertainment elsewhere.  First Serve Toonz is a joint venture between First Serve International and Toonz Animation India Pvt. Ltd.

India’s Pritish Nandy Communications (PNC) has entered into a multi-picture deal with US-based Motion Pixel Corporation, in an agreement estimated to be worth $25 million.  Under the pact, the two will produce five 3D animated feature-length movies based on PNC’s successful live-action movies, the first of which is already underway, and all will feature both noted Bollywood and international stars.  PNC will oversee the creative on the movies while Motion Pixel’s animation studio Estudio Flex, which is based in Costa Rica, handling the animation.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Raise your hand if you have the smartest baby in the room. Well, of course you do, and Starz Home Entertainment is hoping to help you make them ever so much more so with the launch of Phonics 4 Babies DVD series set for fall 2007.  The series features Mallory Lewis, daughter of Shari Lewis of Lamb Chop fame, who uses puppets and original music to aid babies/toddlers in the development of early speech skills.  The first title in the series is Baby’s First Words (60 minutes) and is scheduled to be available at retail on September 25.

High School Musical 2 will debut in Canadian on the Family Channel on August 17 at 8p, the same day and time as its US premiere on Disney Channel.  A Disney Channel Original Movie, HSM 2 features the return of the cast and director Kenny Ortega, who also heads the choreography team, from the original HSM.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Hey guess what, more Spider-Man 3 news … a shock? No, but interesting none-the-less.   The Spider-Man 3 video game was the most requested videogame on Gottaplay Interactive, an online videogame site.  The single-player action game (rated T for Teens), pits Spidey against ten of his nefarious enemies and is available to Gottaplay members for a range of next generation gaming consoles.
