Cynopsis: DIGITAL
5/07/07
Good Morning, it’s Monday, May 7, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing, coming to you from the Cable Show 2007 in Las Vegas.
In contrast to NBC News‘ territorial policies regarding broadband usage of its debate coverage, CNN announced it would lift copyright restrictions on the video coverage CNN, Hearst-Argyle’s WMUR-TV and the New Hampshire Union Leader provide for the next round of debates on June 3 and June 5. Sen. Barack Obama suggested last week media outlets waive restrictions so that the content can be shared openly online. Meanwhile, MSNBC.com has decided to archive the entire Republican debate and make it available throughout the campaign.
~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~
Entrants to the Hearst Digital Media‘s CosmoGIRL! contest figured out a way to enter votes for the user generated video contest multiple times a day, breaking the one vote per-day rule stipulated on the site. Savvy users removed “cookies,” making each new vote appear to be from a fresh user. Hearst Digital is working on a new tamper-proof system to remedy the problem. The winner of the $10,000 CosmoGIRL prize will be determined by a trio of judges this time around, to be announced in the August issue of Cosmo.
Newly-rebranded Lime.com launched a new animated web series Ms. Rabble, produced by Fun Little Movies President Frank Chindamo and voiced by former SNL cast member Victoria Jackson. The series combines environmentalism with comedy, presenting recycling and sustainable living tips in humorous skits. Additional green-themed videos will also be featured on the site this month, part of its “Ditch it” theme for May.
Turner Classic Movies and user generated content portal AOL Uncut are giving fans a chance to win a spot as guest programmer on the network by submitting video testimonials online describing why they should be chosen. Judges will narrow down the entries to a group of finalists, and AOL Uncut users will choose the winner. The deadline for entry is May 25. The winner will be announced June 20.
WWE.com’s broadband network has streamed more than 6.2 million original episodes since launching on February 1 of this year, according to the company. The site has introduced 12 short-form series so far, totaling 66 original episodes.
MySpace founder Richard Rosenblatt launched ME.TV, an integrated suite of social media tools to help manage video-centric websites. Many of the tools were originally developed for MySpace by Rosenblatt’s previous company INTERMIX; licensing rights for the software were retained as part of the deal with News Corp. ME.TV parent company Demand Media has an exclusive arrangement with domain keeper VeriSign to resell .tv domain names. The software suite will be given to customers for free who purchase a .tv domain name. The company announced it sold more than $500,000 worth of .tv domains during their first 24 hours of availability. NBC late night host Carson Daly launched carsondaly.tv using the tools.
YouTube implemented a new revenue-sharing program to help compensate creators of the site’s more popular videos, joining video sites such as Revver, Metacafe and Blip.tv in the trend. Details of how much creators can expect to earn from shared ad revenue were not disclosed, but YouTube said only 20-40 producers would participate in the program’s initial roll out.
Joost signed a partnership with broadband video/social networking portal Heavy.com to distribute three categories of programming from the male-oriented site – Heavy Animation, Heavy Comedy and Heavy “Gurls”.
Mobile entertainment network Zannel, Inc. announced a deal with Warner Music/Nettwerk Music joint venture Eleven Seven Records to create viral mobile music channels around eight of the group’s top artists. The channels feature their latest music videos, album cover art and band photos, which can be shared between users throughout the Zannel Pass it On Network.
A number of independent record labels are ending their relationship with digital subscription service eMusic due to unhappiness over the site’s pricing model, according to Billboard. The site offers subscribers download plans ranging from $10 per month for 30 downloads to $75 for 300 downloads, but shares as little as 12 cents per song with record labels. EMusic has more than 300,000 paying subscribers.
Redwood City-based Attributor Corp. is testing a digital fingerprinting solution system that scans and captures characteristics of text, video and images to help producers track how their content is being used on the internet. The company is the process of building a searchable public registry of copyrighted content, adding 40-50 million web pages per day using RSS feeds and content scanning techniques.
Talks of a possible merger between Microsoft and Yahoo was the topic du jour on Wall Street this weekend. Microsoft is worried about losing the race to become a major player in online advertising. Renewed rumors of a merger, first considered by the two companies a year ago, pushed Yahoo’s stock price up by 10% on Friday. More recent reports are backtracking, saying a technology agreement looks more likely, given the overlap of MSN and Yahoo’s search service.
NBC Universal joined with Viacom in filing a friends-of-the-court request with the U.S. District Court, in support of a lawsuit filed by journalist Robert Tur that alleges YouTube infringed on copyrights by failing to take down video footage of the LA riots he shot in 1992. Meanwhile England’s Premiere Football League and music publisher Bourne filed a separate class action lawsuit against the video community site, seeking an injunction and unspecified damages.
Video on demand vendor SeaChange unveiled new management software MSOs will be able to use on other servers besides those purchased from the Acton, Mass.-based company. SeaChange also introduced a new flash-based video server that stripes content files across flash modules. Singe flash-based servers providing 300 hours of storage will be available to cable operators from the third quarter.
Switched video will be a hot technology topic at the Cable Show this week as cable operators look for ways to free up additional bandwidth. Tandberg Television will be showing off its OpenStream Switched Digital Video system that allows operators to mix MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 encoding formats, saving bandwidth by delivering lesser-watched channels only when they are requested. The system has been integrated with Imagine‘s Variable Bit Rate and statistical multiplexing technology, allowing operators to enhance VOD and SDV deployments with up to 50 percent more streams.
Google began testing “Gadget Ads,” interactive applications that allow advertisers to add rich media features to their internet ads. Webmasters will be able to auction off widget space on personal sites and blogs. The HTML-based gadgets can be configured to include flash, video, real-time updates and transactional functionality. Google has also developed interaction-reporting tools to track the performance of the new features.
The Cabletelevision Advertising Bureau is establishing a new commission to help establish standards advertisers, cable networks and Nielsen can use to set commercial rates. The CAB is inviting the American Association of Advertising Agencies (AAAA), the Association of National Advertisers (ANA) and the Media Ratings Council (MRC) to participate.

PR Newswire struck a deal with market intelligence company Umbria to build a service that measures the impact of blogs and online conversations on companies, products and brands. The “MediaSense Blog Measurement” service builds on PR Newswire’s existing relationship with Technorati, which tracks online blogging trends.
The 18-24 year old demographic was the heaviest user of YouTube for the month of mid-February to mid-March accounting for 29.7 % of the traffic, according to Hitwise. Yet 35-44 year-olds were close behind, generating 27.7% of the traffic, followed by 25-34 year-olds (18.1%), 45-54 year-olds (17.3%) and the over 55 crowd (12.08%).
The city of Philadelphia, the home base of cable’s largest MSO Comcast, has a new local web portal. DigPhilly.com, launched by NBC O&O WCAU-TV, combines local search with reviews of local hangouts, classifieds, video sharing and other social networking features. The forward-thinking things about the site are its clean, uncluttered interface and the fact you have to look hard to find the NBC 10 brand.

A new website will be featured here everyday for you to check out. Some are TV-centric, some creative, some just plain strange. Email me your suggestions at [email protected] and if I include the site you mention, your name, company and city will be credited. Only one mention per calendar week, to make it fair.
