Good morning. It’s Monday, May 5, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Iron Man muscled into its opening weekend to glean an estimated $101 million domestically in its first weekend, and if you include the Thursday night preview showings that moves up to $104+ million. The Paramount and Marvel Studios’ the PG-13 movie rang in as the second-biggest superhero movie opening weekend ever for a movie that was not a sequel, behind Spider-Man (May 2002), and the 10th biggest of all time, according to Box Office Mojo. This was the first Marvel Studios financed movie. Let’s hope this is a foreshadowing of the summer movie season!
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Principle photography on Disney’s feature film High School Musical 3: Senior Year began over the weekend in Utah. With Kenny Ortega back at the helm, HSM 3 stars will be released in theaters October 24, 2008.
MORE KIDS STUFF
DC Comics partners with Stone Arch Books on a new series of easy chapter books based on DC Comic’s Batman and Superman. Featuring original stories and illustrations by veteran DC Comics artists, the new publishing program begins in spring 2009 with 12 book titles, with a total of 48 titles slated for release over four seasons. The second line will add Wonder Woman titles. Stone Arch will handle development, design, and distribution to the school and public library markets.
Kidtoons in conjunction with Genius Products and Sesame Workshop presents Sesame Street: Dinosaurs, which makes its theatrical debut in May 2008 as part of Kidtoons’ family matinee series at US movie theatres as part of Kidtoons’ digital cinema network. Starring Elmo, Telly Monster and Abby Cadabby, the movie is rated G and targeted to K3-8. Participating theatres include National Amusements, Abingdon Cinemall, Allen, Atlas, Emagine, Marquee, Neighborhood, AccessIT’s Pavilion Theatre, Rave Motion Pictures, Republic Theatre Group, Showplace and UltraStar. Kidtoons is a division of The Bigger Picture.
Microsoft has introduced an early version, an alpha version, of its kid and teen targeted Popfly Game Creator. The site is designed to allow would-be young game developers to create their own casual 2D games, without the complication of writing codes. The game features 15 pre-built game templates and a range of image, animations and backgrounds and sounds for use in creating games.
Teens and music go hand-in-hand. Social music service Jango is powering a new celebrity playlist widget for Hearst Magazine’s Seventeen.com . Users can listen to music handpicked by personalities including Rihanna, Ashlee Simpson, Jordin Sparks and Brendon Urie via an embeddable co-branded jukebox application. The widget can be integrated into a host of online environments including iGoogle, Piczo and Friendster.
Correction: The puppet stars of Cartoon Network’s new interstitial promotional segment, Jib & Crash, which premiered last night on the network, are indeed male characters based on human beings and not intestines. While the error was moderately humorous given my week as a mother of two kids home sick from school with a stomach virus, I do regret the error. Thanks for all of the emails, many of which were very amusing.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Dic Entertainment has tapped Plus Licens AB as the merchandising and publishing agent for Strawberry Shortcake across Central and Eastern Europe. Plus Licens will develop and implement a comprehensive merchandising and publishing campaign across the region. First introduced in 1980 by American Greetings Corporation, Strawberry Shortcake was re-launched in 2003 by American Greetings and Dic.
7-Eleven, Inc. has partnered Coca-Cola, Activision, Inc. and Microsoft Corp. for a Slurpee and Guitar Hero for the Full Throttle Frozen Blast Slurpee, a cross-promotion to bolster the release of the video game title Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, which drops June 29. Available beginning this month, the 22-oz Guitar Hero branded Slurpee cup offer will be supported online, radio spots and via event marketing and street teams, as well as through a contest at www.slurpee.com .
Staples, Inc., and Do Something.org‘s Do Something 101 have partnered with recording artist Jordin Sparks (of American Idol fame) for a teen-targeted public service announcement (PSA) effort. The PSAs feature Sparks encouraging teens to get involved with their communities this summer by collecting school supplies, and dropping them off at Staples stores, which will then be distributed to kids in need during back to school season. The PSA will begin airing this month on Channel One, BusRadio, as well as TV and radio stations nationwide throughout the summer.
Designer Diane von Furstenberg (DVF) is collaborating with Warner Bros. Consumer Products, on behalf of DC Comics, to create a Wonder Woman-inspired collection. The Wonder Woman collection will launch in DVF boutiques and specialty stores worldwide in October 2008. The limited edition collection will include a selection of ready-to-wear, small leather goods and footwear inspired by the motifs and symbols of the iconic superhero. Proceeds from select pieces will be contributed to Vital Voices Global Partnership, an NGO that trains and empowers emerging women leaders and social entrepreneurs.
IQPC’s 15th Annual Kid Power Conference will be held May 19-22, at Disney’s Yacht & Club Resort in Orlando, FL. The conference will focus on research and trends in youth and parents marketing.

WonderGroup, the advertising and interactive marketing agency, announces several key executive moves:
- Greg Livingston, a founding partners and former EVP of the company is promoted to President. Previously, Livingston held senior marketing roles at Sive/Young & Rubicam, LCA-Vision, Stockton West Burkhart, Rapp & Collins (NY) and The Direct Marketing Group (NY).
- Mat Fischer adds COO to his existing responsibilities as Chief Creative Officer, bringing the account service and creative teams under his oversight. Fischer joined WonderGroup in 2003 and became a partner three years later. He previously toiled in the NY offices of Foote Cone & Belding, Young & Rubicam, Hill Holiday, BBDO and DDB Worldwide.

Jonathan Breiter joins NettoCollection as Partner and CMO. An industry veteran, Breiter has worked on the advertising side for Wendy’s, Yoplait Yogurt and Hasbro Toys, before shifting to the manufacturing side and serving as SVP, Playskool, eventually moving on to launch his own room decor business, which was ultimately acquired by The Betesh Group.
