Cynopsis: Kids!

05/24/10

Good morning. It’s Monday, May 24, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Disney Channel picks up the new dance-centric buddy comedy Shake It Up!  Created by Chris Thompson (Laverne and Shirley, Bosom Buddies, The Naked Truth) and executive-produced by Thompson and Rob Lotterstein (The War at Home, Ellen), the multi-camera sitcom begins production in Hollywood this July and is scheduled to premiere on the network fall 2010.  Shake It Up! stars 12-year-old Bella Thorne (Big Love) and 13-year-old Zendaya as best friends that dream of becoming professional dancers, and landed roles as background dancers on a local teen dance show, Shake It Up, Chicago.  The series follows the girls and the goings on at school, particularly with their newfound social status, and behind the scenes at the show, which of course includes their relationship with rival dancers, Tinka and Gunther.  A production of It’s a Laugh Productions, Shake It Up! also stars Kenton Duty (Lost), Adam Irigoyen (Wizards of Waverly Place), and Davis Cleveland (Good Luck Charlie, Desperate Housewives).

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Gary Oldman signs on as a cast member of DreamWorks Animation‘s 3D sequel to Kung Fu Panda, Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom, which is slated for release in June 3, 2011, per Heat Vision.  Oldman will lend his voice to Peacock, a character that helps Po (Jack Black) find bandits, which turns out to be more than it seems.  That summer Oldman will also reprise his role as Sirius Black in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II, which releases in 3D on July 15, 2011.

Orlando Bloom and James Corden join the cast of the new 3D adaptation of The Three Musketeers, per Variety.  Bloom takes on the role of the Duke of Buckingham, with Corden playing the servant Planchet.  Directed/produced by Paul W.S. Anderson for Constantin Film and Impact Pictures, Summit plans to release the movie in the US for summer 2011, with Constantin distributing in Germany.  Andrew Davies and Alex Litvak are adapting the screenplay from the original Alexandre Dumas novel.  Anderson is producing with Impact partner Jeremy Bolt and Constantin’s Robert Kulzer.  The cast already includes Christoph Waltz as Cardinal Richelieu, Logan Lerman as D’Artagnan, Matthew MacFadyen as Athos, Ray Stevenson as Porthos and Luke Evans as Aramis, with Milla Jovovich as M’lady De Winter, and Mads Mikkelsen as Rochefort.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nicktoons picks up a second season of Marvel Entertainment‘s animated series Iron Man: Armored Adventures.  Co-produced by DQ Entertainment International with Marvel Animation and Method Animation, the new season is comprised of 26 episodes and is slated to debut in 2011.  Iron Man: Armored Adventures, the network’s highest rated original series premiere (April 2009) with Boys 6-11, revolves around the teenaged Tony Stark shortly after losing his father and his ongoing fight against to evildoers.

Everloop, a new tween-targeted social networking company, enters into a joint venture with kid-centric science brand The Mad Science Group, to launch The Mad Science Club ( www.madsciencekidsclub.com), a kid-aimed science social network. The Mad Science Kids Club will offer kid members a range of features including IM, email, SMS, VoIP, a Skype like application, a game arcade and customized widgets.  Additionally, being a science-based effort, The Mad Science Club will also feature science-specific applications including: Lab Rat – featuring a panel of experts to answer kids science questions; Science Zone – provides kids/parents with science experiments that can be done at home; Brain Busters – brain teasers, puzzles, and optical illusions; Around the Word – an online kids book club.  Starting with an invite only beta, The Mad Science Kids Club is set to launch in the third quarter of this year.

KidsCo inks a carriage deal with Moldtelecom, making the channel available in the Eastern European state of Moldova, per C21 Media.  Launching on Moldtelecom on June 1, 2010, KidsCo will featuring programming including its original productions such as Boo & Me, Boo’s Sanctuary and Jass Time, as well as other series including Sonic: Underground, Sabrina: The Animated Series, Max and Ruby, and Even Stevens.
