Cynopsis: DIGITAL
05/24/10

Good morning, it’s Monday, May 24, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

In a unanimous 5-0 vote, the Federal Trade Commission announced on Friday that it has officially approved Google‘s plan to acquire leading mobile ad firm AdMob in a deal valued at $750 million. After pouring over the deal for more than 6 months, the FTC decided that there was sufficient competition in the mobile advertising market, particularly following Apple’s pick up of Quattro Wireless in Jan. and its subsequent launch of the “iAd” platform.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

DISH Network will be a key partner in the new Google TV platform and it couldn’t have come at a better time for the Echostar subsidiary as it seeks to differentiate itself from its competitors beyond just price. Embedding the cross-platform search feature into Dish DVRs, equipped with Logitech keyboard-enhanced remote controls, will give users not only access to online content but also provide unlimited possibilities for networks who want to build compelling interactive apps around their shows.

Bravo says its “Talk Bubble” social media event around “The Real Housewives of New York City” earned significant week-over-week gains among all key metrics during Thursday night’s episode, registering a 62% increase in page views and a 49% increase in uniques versus the prior week’s event. Bravo says its “Real Housewives of New York City” show site also saw significant gains due to ‘Talk Bubble,” registering 1.5 million page views for the day.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Search data marketplace provider Magnetic is announcing an integration with ad networks interCLICK and Undertone Networks this morning enabling advertisers to target campaigns on virtually any media by utilizing search data to determine who intends to purchase the product. Search data is used as the key indicator of intent to increase conversions by finding customers at all points in the purchase funnel outside of the search engine. “In the true upper funnel, customers are just entering the purchase mode and they are already indicating the potential path they may take to a purchase. Advertisers have never been able to harness that data from search,” said Josh Shatkin-Margolis, CEO of Magnetic in a statement.

Yahoo
built a HTML5-formulated rich media ad with Paramount and DreamWorks Animation to promote the launch of “Shrek Forever After.”  The ad, featured on both the Yahoo! homepage and on the Yahoo! Movies home page on the iPhone, morphs into a large animated image of the giant green ogre wearing 3-D glasses on the screen with a call to action to view the film’s trailer.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

TiVo struck a technology partnership with Technicolor (formerly Thompson) to jointly develop an advanced, TiVo-ready, HD PVR set-top box for operators around the globe who pay to license TiVo’s set-top software. Technicolor will port TiVo software to its latest PVR hardware platform, reducing development and integration costs associated with operator deployment and ultimately slashing the time required to bring the product to market. (Comcast in the U.S. spent years trying to integrate the Tivo interface and is still making tweaks to the service in New England, the only area that has launched the solution so far.)

Google has acquired online music and photo streaming service Simplify Media it was revealed at Google’s I/O Developer’s Conference last week. Simplify Media, which stopped taking on new customers a couple of months back, will provide Google with the technology to enable Android users to stream music to their mobile phones.

Advertising technology start-up Invite Media may be Google’s next takeover target, reports AllThingsD citing sources. Invite provides a “demand side” platform to help buyers maximize efficiency on high volume display advertising exchanges.

Google‘s new free WebM-project video codec dubbed VP8 is the secret sauce behind the new Google TV announcement, according to entertainment and tech analyst firm In-Stat. VP8 will enable YouTube content be re-purposed at different video resolutions allowing video and audio files to be viewed directly by any WebM-capable browser in a much higher quality than similar last-10-feet solutions. “With Android and Chrome as the underpinning platform, Google will be able to combine content with intelligent search and with innovative services to present what may become a compelling user experience that spans HD TV sets and in-home devices, and eventually connects to, literally, everything,” notes Gerry Kaufhold, principal analyst with In-Stat.

As high profile competitors gear up to provide interactive content to the television, Comcast‘s Fancast portal is quietly improving its user interface as it prepares to roll out a dynamic iPad application that will enable full episode viewing on the device. (Given Hulu’s plans to roll out a paid iPad app later this year, don’t expect Fancast’s Hulu content to among the choices but there plenty of other shows it can offer including authentication-required pay services such as HBO Go. It would be even more surprising to see Hulu become compatible with Google TV, for that matter, given its history of blocking such services.) Brand new Fancast features include new Video Browse pages, a more visual gallery view of episodes and movies, extensive sharing features and new configurable filters that scroll through shows by genre, network, rating and HD format. Other enhancements include Search Engine Optimization tweaks and updates to the TV Grid and VOD search changes. Searches are now easy to navigate and lightning fast; a Google-style pull-down menu appears below your searches to help you find what you’re looking for. For instance, type in “Lost” to be taken to a special final season page, which aggregates tons of extra material for hardcore fans, not to mention every episode from all 6 seasons.
